3G iOS4 resulting in sluggish performance and horribly slow calendar

Sorry to say but the restore as a new phone didn't help me anything 😟
Opening the text messages and the calendar takes forever...

THIS *****, it is bad. Text message takes forever to load and type and send. Like everyone else buttons are slow to react. Everything is bad. Apple needs to do something. Actually they did they are forcing everyone to buy the 4

I also am experiencing the sluggishness when I touch buttons. There is a 10 second delay. I also am experiencing the screens blanking out then coming back as others have reported. I'm not having calendar issues though as some are.

I've scrolled through this list and haven't seen any answers other then upgrade to iPhone 4. Not an option for me. I'm a full-time student with a part-time job!

If anyone gets an answer to fix the problem, please let me know!!

Has anyone noted any improvement with iOS 4.0.1 or iOS 4.1 beta?

iam new here, so just did not find the place to write, actually....well its like this, my wife got the iphone 3g with the OS 3.0 installed, now she will upgrade to os 3.1.3 but, Itunes suggest her just os 4.0
how can she upgrade to os 3.1.3 and not to os 4.0.....anyone?

I'm also experiencing this. I called Apple who told me that engineers are working on a fix which should be ready in two weeks.

Another name on this list... this really isn't what I expect from Apple.

I truly hope they do get this sluggishness fixed asap because I won't be an iPhone 4 customer unless they look after me as a 3G customer.

I effing hope so... My wife's 3G is virtually unuseable!
She can't even answer calls after her phone has been on and in use for a while (probably because of all of the background resources being hogged by iPod, Mail, Safari etc.)
I wholeheartedly agree that this really shows how little development time is being spent on optimizing iOS4 for the older hardware.
A Geek at the Apple store even put his foot-in-mouth by saying, "Yeah, well iOS 4 really shines on the iPhone 4"... Thanks kid, but you shouldn't have to upgrade your hardware every 24 months just so you can stay functional.

I have updated to OS 4.01 today and my phone is now back to speed, as fast as i can drag and slide and tap my fingers on the screen, it can keep up no problems. I tried each App that I have apprehensively to see if any of them would cause the phone to go back to its horrible sluggishness, but I am happy to say that every App works very nicely without any lag.

After suffering from a very very sluggish OS 4.0, this update is fantastic and has made the phone 100% usable again.

If you are on the fence about upgrading, then I would recommend that you do it asap, the speed increase is very welcome.

I too have experienced a return to normal operation following installation of the OS 4.01. Apps once again function normally and operational speed is at or better than 3.13.

Another unhappy user.

My iPhone 3g is now basically unusably slow. I'm not sure I want to buy an iphone4 later on, knowing that when they upgrade the os they won't care about keeping the old phones running well.

I don't even care about the ios4 features, I just want to rollback my os so my phone can be fun again. Seriously considering other alternatives at this point.

I can't even figure out how to contact apple directly about this issue.

Phone is borderline unusable for texting and calendar functions.

Wish there was some more testing.

I'm afraid that in my case, and upgrade to 4.0.1. was thoroughly unsuccessful. Back down to 3.1.2!

Also slow here. 4.01 upgrade seemed to help...but delays were quick to return.
