Space between column ends and footnotes?

Can anyone explain how to get rid of what seems to be the random whitespace between footnotes and content text when using columns? When I have only 1 col it seems fine, but if I switch to 2 or 3 cols then these random spaces open up. Some pages it is fine (bottom of screenshot) but others it is not. What's up with this?

Hello F Younghusband,

welcome to the Pages Discussions. The only reason for the white space I can imagine, is the extra Layou-Border after a layout area. Look inside the infopalettes "Layout" section. At the bottom, there are four number fields where you can insert extra borders for every layout you inserts into the document. Look, if there is a setting for the field "After". Set it to "0".

But after reading your post, I think you have inserted the layout break unintentionally. So you can delete the white space, too, if you delete the layout break by placing the text cursor behind the last word of the page, where the space is, and press the delete key. But then the space is behind the last word of the fomerly second layout area.

I hope this was a clear description 🙂

F Younghusband,

ahrrrg! Why haven't you wrote that first? If this is a Word document the case is clear 😉

Well, fun aside. I really don't know why that happens, because the only reason for a clear space with visible layout guides inside layouts (like the first page shows in the image) is a layout border. But I think the word stuff causes the problem. Where the footnotes inside the document before you imported the document into Pages?

What happens, when you set the layout for a new Pages document and past the text into it, or is it too much work? I think then it should be ok.

Frank.
