iPhone 3G on iOS 4 freezes unless plugged into power

I upgraded to the iOS 4 last night with little problems. Things seemed to work fine until I set the phone down and the screen turned off (like normal). Then when I tried to wake it, it wouldn't do anything. I had my roommate call and it rang normal on his end, my phone just sat there. I can do a reboot of the phone by holding both buttons down and it turns back on, and works fine, until the screen locks again. If I have it plugged into a power source it doesn't seem to lock up on me. It only locks up if I have it unplugged from power for longer than a minute or two, and have the screen locked. This is the case with a wall plug, car plug, or plugged into the MacBook. It doesn't seem to be an issue with a dead battery either, since I can unplug it and it works fine, until I lock the screen. I have tried a restore (which fails with an error of I think 1602). I also tried putting the phone in restore mode by holding both buttons down for 10 seconds then the home button for an additional 10 seconds and it restored after a few hours, but then still freezes up at the locked screen.

Any ideas or anyone else having the same issue?

Mine does EXACTLY the same thing!

Silly Apple!

It was doing it with the last of the 3.0 firmwares, and literally froze up for hours on end. I upgraded to 4.0 when the patch was released and it seemed to had stopped freezing . .WRONG! It still does every day constantly.

My solution for the freezing, albeit temporary is:

Press screen lock

Press home, and for some reason the slide lock works responsively to touch. If it hasnt worked, lock the screen again, and try again. If this still fails, then you have to do a reboot by holding the home key and screen lock key. Sometimes, if you're lucky the locked screen will appear and you can let go in time to stop the phone from rebooting.

It's rather silly that we pay copious amounts of money for 'convenient' technology, which at times is largely inconvenient!

Anyone else have any permanent solutions to this problem?? I am beggining to think that when I last had my phone 'repaired' that they've given me a faulty handset (which is now out of its 3 months added warranty) in replacement.

My iPhone 3GS is exhibiting this bug too after upgrading to iOS4. I also upgraded to iOS4.01 but still have the same problem.

Freezes about once a day - the two-button 10 second restart 'solves' it each time, but as with others - this has turned a year-long utterly stable 3GS into a very unstable device.

How do we raise this up to Apple as a bug? Do they monitor these boards and pick it out if enough people are having the problem?

Alex.

i feel so lucky to have a 16gb, 3G phone (for over 2 years now) and no problems...even with upgrading(well, i have the 4.0.2 version anyhow). I only have 103 apps-deleted about 30that i hated), 928 pictures, 1400 songs, a dvd and 7 audio books...i had one issue that caused my backlight to not come on. i freaked, started reading these boards, then the problem later self corrected! so i feel badly for those who are issued to the max. i wonder if restoring as a "new phone" would help instead of restoring with a present state backup? next offering would be step upto a 3GS iPhone until the 4.0 iPhones are solid. also, if you have the 'remote' app, that is when my backlight prob started. I deleted it. may not be related to my backlight, but it was the only thing i had changed recently.
