iPhone 3G on iOS 4 freezes unless plugged into power

I upgraded to the iOS 4 last night with little problems. Things seemed to work fine until I set the phone down and the screen turned off (like normal). Then when I tried to wake it, it wouldn't do anything. I had my roommate call and it rang normal on his end, my phone just sat there. I can do a reboot of the phone by holding both buttons down and it turns back on, and works fine, until the screen locks again. If I have it plugged into a power source it doesn't seem to lock up on me. It only locks up if I have it unplugged from power for longer than a minute or two, and have the screen locked. This is the case with a wall plug, car plug, or plugged into the MacBook. It doesn't seem to be an issue with a dead battery either, since I can unplug it and it works fine, until I lock the screen. I have tried a restore (which fails with an error of I think 1602). I also tried putting the phone in restore mode by holding both buttons down for 10 seconds then the home button for an additional 10 seconds and it restored after a few hours, but then still freezes up at the locked screen.

Any ideas or anyone else having the same issue?

I'm seeing a similar problem with my iPhone 3GS. Ever since I upgraded to iOS 4, the phone periodically freezes. Specifically, it stops recognizing touch input. This always seems to happen when I'm using the phone in some way, either ending a phone call, trying to call up the keypad when on a phone call, or retrieving voice mail. It's happened when I've had it connected to the computer, and when it's been running off the battery. Since it won't recognize touch input, it can't be unlocked or shut down via the normal means. The only way to fix it is to hold both buttons down until it forces a reboot. It's happened three times so far today, and more yesterday. I've had this phone for almost a year, and nothing like this ever happened until after the iOS 4 upgrade.

Exactly same problem with me too,
I have also noticed that while the phone is in this non-responsive state, there is some heating and a bif time battery drain.

another thing you guys might find, you wont be able to properly switch off your phone now (press and hold the top sellp/wake button and then slde for power off)

went to an Apple service center today, thier suggestion is to buy a new phone...
as may warranty has expired one month back.

now considering jail breaking.

You'll need to stop restoring and backing up your phones. The best way to literally start from a new baseband software is to create a new user account on your computer. Here are the instructions:

1. Setup new user on computer (make sure your contact data and basic information is backed up in applications like Address book and Mail)
2. open itunes (without iphone plugged in)
3. Shut down iphone
4. Hold the home button (while off), then plug it in. Continue holding the home button until it turns on and appears in"recovery mode" in the itunes application
5. Release home button and resync basic data such as contacts and mail accounts
6. Test the phone after doing this to see if the data is properly synced and the phone works well so far
7. proceed to syncing all your music and apps

WARNING:
Fixing the phone this way will fix the freezing problem, but will not perserve temporary or saved data from your phone such as game account information, scores, notes, text message archives, etc. The most likely cause for the freezing is a discrepancy between the backed up data and the restored (IOS 4.0) software. Setting the phone up as a new iphone without restoring it from any backups is the best way to solve this problem AND operate iOS 4.

I have the exact same issues with my simlock free 3GS. It randomly stops accepting touch screen input, most of the time when I am using the iPhone. Everything else still works, but a reboot is required to restore the touch screen functionality.

Thanks for the insights and advise, but the upgrade from 3.1.3 to 4.0 should have taken care of any discrepancies. And why would user data influence the functioning of the touch screen anyway? This sounds like a bug in iOS to me.

I've had the same problem. I've noticed it primarily with texting and email. It's a work phone and when the first version of iOS I tried to download was corrupted, I had IT do a clean install. I had the same problem before I ever resynched it to my backup. Doing a hard reboot over and over again is annoying to say the least. I get that Apple needed to release the software in advance of iPhone 4 shipping, but this seems very buggy for an Apple product. We pay a premium specifically to avoid these types of issues. I love Apple products, but this is disappointing.

Mine is doing the same thing. Tried to answer a call and couldn't get phone to unlock. It took me a minute of fighting the slider to unlock it. Texts are a nightmare, I have to hit the key several times to make it work. It will work just fine for a couple minutes then freeze again. Usually I have to do a hard reset to get it working again, but sometimes just closing out whatever I'm in, locking phone, and then unlocking it works too. I'm strting to really get tired of Apple. I just had to replace my iPhone last month due to crashing apps and dropped calls.

Just before you throw your phone in the east river (by the way, I remember when if you did that the phone would probobly just get stuck on the surface and take a while to sink in the goo) do this instead:
Go to settings
Click Mail settings
click your email account
scroll down and click your email "off" button
repeat the last step to turn back on.
That may do it.

My phone freezes up all the time and it's driving me crazy..this freeze pattern really causes my iPhone to be useless.....I had lots of useless apps on my 3G. I decided to remove the useless apps from my phone but leave them on iTunes. I will add them back later as necessary. I left all the important apps on the phone. After I did this app cleanup, my phone seems to have stopped freezing. I am once again a Happy camper....I also did a ringtone and music clean up- sync with no ringtones/no music checked,...then sync again with ringtones and music checked. It seems to have cleared up my issues with 4.0....Aloha for now
