Error 37 after iOS 4 upgrade

I upgraded this morning to iOS4 on my second generation iTouch. After the download, the OS started installing on my device and right before the end it popped up error 37 and it said there was a error and I had to restore. After 5 restores it always stops with that message. My iTouch doesn't even turn on now, is downgrading my best option at this point?

I've been following this discussion over the past few days since I've had the same problem. After trying everything suggested I can confim the solution -

The issue is caused by "Zone Alarm" or possibly any other third party firewall or security that you might have installed on your computer. Before you restore your iPod/iPhone from recovery/DUF mode, disable Zone Alarm or any other firewall software you have on your computer. "Error 37" should then be resolved.

IMPORTANT - if during your first sync with ios4, the ipod crashes/dies/shutsdown again, then repeat the process, but make sure that your security software is disabled. Until the next iTunes update, there may still be a few problems with third party security and firewall softwares, so it might be best to temporarily disable them when using iTunes to save you having to go through this process again.

For those with other questions -

Yes, everything on your iPod will be erased, but your settings etc. can be re-synced by reconnecting it to your itunes and syncing as per usual. Specific settings such as homescreen backgrounds, wifi settings etc. will only be restored if you have made backups of the iPod on the computer you are syncing from. iTunes will automatically propmt you to reinstall these settings when it recognises your iPod.

Instuctions to put your iPod into recovery/DUF mode can be found on this discussion board or by searching on apple's website or even through tutorial videos on youtube.

Ironically, technicians in the Apple retail stores had no idea what the problem was and did not know how to solve it - they were too busy trying to sell the HUGE new iPhone. oops, I mean iPad.

I'm not sure what error I get it....all I know is that it says that the download timed out (when it really didn't) and to try downloading again later. I have restored my ipod touch 3rd, I have downloaded the latest itunes and tried only downloading the update instead of downloading and installing and nothing:( It won't update my ipod. This ipod is brand new, only had it for 1 week, I know it's not updated, because the feature of shaking the ipod to change a song does not happen on this one. I have two 1st gen touches as well and there aren't any updates for those either. This is the only one that needs updated, and it's frustrating me! I am not sure how much help it will be to go to the Apple store and talk to someone:(

nah the same thing happened to me, i think i can't shake my itouch too since the first time i bought it, but i dont really care about that.the important thing is i can use my itouch, but it was error when i tried to install OS4, so my suggestion, please dont upgrade your itouch, because there r so many problems about upgrading into OS4, and it happened also to me.i was annoyed, but lucky me i still have the warranty and they promised me they will give me the new one if they can't fix my itouch. so, be careful if your warranty is expired because i think it will cost you much to fix it.

hm i just got my itouch back yesterday n they said that there's no problem with my itouch.omg, i think the easiest way to fix the problem in your itouch is simply just connect it to macbook..because im pretty sure that the computer in apple service is mac..yea at least im quite satisfy now because they upgraded my itouch to version4 n i can restore all my applications..so yea everythings cool now..:)

For those of you using windows to sync with your iPhone, don't you find it odd that you have to shut off your zone alarm fire wall in order for your personal information/files to sync with your iPhone from your PC? What IP traffic (which is what zone alarm looks at) is occuring during a USB sync? THe question is rhetorical, I have called into support 3 times now on my open ticket and either the call gets dropped or redirected. Last call I made, I was forwared to AT&T ! Sure, turn off your firewall and it works - but why?

I was getting Error 37 after trying to update my OS4 to OS4.0.1 (iPhone 4).

Tried everything I read on here like reinstalling iTunes etc. Nothing seemed to work and after a while my iPhone went went from showing the USB->iTunes instructions to just turning blank.

I restarted my computer (laptop, Windows 7/Linux) with the iPhone still connected, turned off my firewall (Zone Alarm) and tried again. To my surprise it worked, and I soon managed to restore my settings and the like from my backup.
