iOS4 Mail hanging

Hi

Updated a 3GS to iOS 4 and encountered several problems.

1) Wifi is no longer automatically joining preferred or known networks, have to go into Settings and manually join

2) Mail is hanging on "Checking for mail". A restart sorts the problem and mail can be downloaded, but then gets stuck straight away requiring a further restart.

Anyone else come across these, a search on here and google didn't unearth anything similar.

ok, I just hung up the phone from Apple support. They told me to remove my MobileMe mail account from the phone and add it in manually. Also delete contacts and calendars as they will be re-synced back from the MobileMe 'cloud' to the iPhone. I did this, restarted the phone and I started to get my push notifications from my MobileMe account again and Mail stopped 'hanging' for me. They told me that another solution would be to restore the phone to new. Don't sync it to a back up as the old 'corrupt' data will sync back to the phone and you will be left with the same issues.

I guess this is only relevant if you have a MobileMe account. My thoughts would be to back up all important data such as photos, music, apps, emails, notes, contacts and calendars before restoring the phone and then add everything back manually.

They did say that they are aware of these issues and will be addressing the problem.

I'm having very similar issues on my 3GS and having trouble remembering what the issue was yesterday. Today though, it was Exchange mail that was hanging. It kept saying "Checking for Mail". Hoping that Apple is monitoring this forum and glad to hear that some people are actually calling support. God Bless them. Mail is something that is extremely important to us business users that rely on it.

I've tried a few of the tricks (like quitting from multitasking taskbar) but restarts always seem to resolve everything. Just don't have time to restart very often. Hoping that there is a 4.0.1 in the works and knowing Apple, I'm sure there is.

Hi all. This is frustrating as apple could usually be relied on for their rock solid performance and reliability. Not certain how this issue wasn't picked up. Does anyone know when apple will provide a solution? Hope they get it right soon I quite like ios4 and don't like the thought of having to downgrade.

Yep, same here. No MobileMe account, but my 3GS is hanging on "connecting..." or "Checking for mail..." quite often. Then again, I rely on my iPhone to stay current with my email so I check my email quite often. Sometimes quitting mail and immediately opening it again clears it. This process causes Mail to crash on the re-open but open it again and it should work. But shutting down and starting up seems to be the way to go. A lot of crap to go through to get email when the previous version worked just fine, no problems at all. Plus when it gets stuck in the "connecting..." mode, and don't know about it, my battery drains a lot faster. It's not a network problem, it happens on both 3G and Wifi with all other apps working fine. This is really a huge inconvenience and hope it gets fixed very, very soon.

I just updated my iPhone and found out my email was hanging up too, kept saying "checking for mail" for hours. Is the only way to get your email is to restart the phone? Is Apple even aware of this problem? I'm surprised they didn't test this new update before releasing. If someone finds a work around please advise. Thank you

Similar issues with the 3G. The upgrade to the iOS4 went smooth (straightforward upgrade from itunes), but the mail seems to be messed up. First and foremost, with the unified inbox approach, what happens is you have a unified inbox at the top, then you have your individual mailboxes, AND below them you have the same mail boxes with their respective symbols. e.g. i have a unified inbox for gmail and yahoo, then i have the gmail and yahoo inboxes, and below them I again have another set of Gmail and Yahoo! inboxes with the product symbols - any specific reason for the redundancy? Does this cause the extremely slow mail sync since multiple copies are trying to get indexed at all these locations? It is so painful to check emails, i actually have resorted to using the browser to login. The mail app opens up, and then just goes on trying to sync mail, and although i can see i have unread mails, if i open any one, the sync circle of time just goes on forever.
Mind this, the app never hangs as such, if i click the home button, it exits smoothly as if nothing ever happened (perhaps some code left over from the multi-tasking not available for the 3G, that lets you exit quickly while pausing the app?). I hope this is addressed and 3G users are not left with a worthless phone, after all they did pay when it was the all new sensation...

Yes, a real problem ! I upgraded my 3GS to iOS4 and really regret the outcome - destroyed my data network and mail server !! Messages include :

' Could not activate cellular data network - you are not subscribed to a cellular data service ' and
' The mail server "mail.mac.com" is not responding. Verify you have entered the correct account information in Mail Settings '

Wish I had waited because I have yet to sight a solution on line - there have been a number of suggestions from persons who seem to have a computer engineering background - they are just too difficult to comprehend and still not guaranteed to fix the problem.
While I like the folder upgrade and new camera focus bar etc I can no longer run my business outside home base as there is no mobile email facility nor internet connection. My local Telecom Network is not the problem - it's still functioning and I'm fully subscribed.
How long are we going to have to wait for a formal response from Apple ??? - I do feel I have been sabotaged

hello there. i've been skimming through this forum and not sure if i'm the only one experiencing the following problems with mobileme/mail on my 3GS after loading iOS 4 on the 21. everything else seems to be working fine, i've just been having problems with mail that are quite unacceptable although knowing apple, a fix will be put out in the near future (i hope). here they go:

1.) unread messages remain unread even after opening (and after keeping the message open for more than 15 secs)
2.) the iphone will buzz as if there's a new message, the number over the mail icon on the home screen will read a number but no new message in inbox
3.) messages will be marked read after opening, but upon returning to inbox, they're unread again
4.) new messages appearing and disappearing from inbox
5.) weird messages appearing in inbox with "(No Sender)" in the From line, "(No Subject)" in the subject line, and "this message has no content" in the body of the email. i cannot open these messages nor delete them from my inbox. i've seen as many as 6 appear and disappear.
6.) the iphone will buzz as if there's a new email, the number at the top of the inbox will indicate there's a new email with "(1)" or "(2)", but no new emails
7.) upon toggling between Threaded and Normal, inbox returns back to normal TEMPORARILY
8.) these problems are present in both the Threaded and Normal modes

resetting the phone cures this problem temporarily. i've called apple customer care and although very helpful and thorough, the problem still remains.

i'm restoring my phone as we speak so time will tell if this alleviates the issue, although i have a feeling this it will persist until there's an update.

anyone else experiencing this?

thanks!
