iOS4 Mail hanging

Hi

Updated a 3GS to iOS 4 and encountered several problems.

1) Wifi is no longer automatically joining preferred or known networks, have to go into Settings and manually join

2) Mail is hanging on "Checking for mail". A restart sorts the problem and mail can be downloaded, but then gets stuck straight away requiring a further restart.

Anyone else come across these, a search on here and google didn't unearth anything similar.

Well, I tried turning threads off and reporting back that this did not solve the problem. My mail is hanging right now as I type this. Hope Apple is able to fix it soon. I plan to keep iOS 4 on my phone and wait for them to fix it. Seems like it would be cleaner and easier since I don't really wan't to restore from backup or worse, restore to 3.1.3 and then reset settings.

My 32MB 3GS is having the same problems with the "Checking for Mail" forever. I have my own pop/smtp from my webhost for my website... settings are all the same as before.. port numbers correct etc etc (and on iOS3x I never had any problem with e-mail) and have checked them many times (not to mention zero issues with getting mail from the same pop/smtp on either my Win 7 PC or latest OS-X MacBook Pro). The IOS4 e-mail app works fine most times, but about once or twice a day is goes into the checking for mail forever mode. Force quitting the app (i.e holding the power button until the power off screen comes up and then pressing and holding the home button until the app closes out) stops it and I'm able to get mail again until it happens again.

BTW... I have had this happen (repeatedly) while on 3G or via WiFi... so the problem is not a 3G or WiFi issue IMHO.

Trying to close the app by closing/deleting it from the task bar does not work for me.

Has to be a issue with the iOS4 e-mail app which I hope apple fixes soon. This is a PITA.

I upgraded yesterday from 3G to iOS4 and have had this problem ever since. Every so often the email hangs both when trying to send or retrieve email. I even experience the problem when trying to view text messages. I'll receive the notification for a new text, touch view and the phone just hangs. Rebooting tends to clear it for a while but it's getting real old, really fast.

I have the same problem since I upgraded to OS 4.0. It appears to me this is related to having the mail running in the background. When I double click on the home button and delete mail from running, then start mail up again, it brings in the mail just fine (for awhile, and then I need to do this again). I agree with everybody else, this is intolerable for an upgrade.

Hi,

Just to add to this discussion in the hopes of it being resolved sooner that later.

The new Mail program, on my iPod Touch 3G, now running iOs4, hangs when trying to delete "threaded" messages. Doesn't matter if the threading is turned on or off within the Settings.

When I delete a message, it disappears from the inbox. However, when I then leave the inbox to go to another inbox, the app hangs for about 30-60 seconds. Then sometimes it crashes and dumps me back at the "desktop".

If I open mail again and go into the mail box, the messages are there again. So, now, I have emails I cant delete. This particular issue is happening with a POP3 account, not sure if that makes a difference.

Please fix email soon :)!

same issue here. hard reset solves it for one download cycle, then freezes at 'connecting' again. It's not IP connectivity because all other 3G functions work fine.

4 calls to "Apple Care", including one that ended up in "what city? 'Asia/Pacific'...Asia/Pacific isn't a city - SHAME Steve!"...same nonsense - 'delete your email accounts and reinstall' which is an unacceptable guessing game. regardless i tried doing just that with my gmail account since it's IMAP and I wouldn't lose everything, and it didn't solve the problem anyway.

Apple, PLEASE figure out why this problem exists, WHY a reboot solves the problem for one download and then mail receiving stops again. and STOP outsourcing your call centers!!!

I think I've found a solution --- it looks like Mail is hanging, but in reality the problem lies in the wifi. (There are several other forum discussions on wifi issues with an upgrade.) Once you upgrade, if you have any Wifi networks nearby that the iPhone remembers, it will try to connect when it starts checking your mail. But, either due to an issue with the router remembering the phone or vice versa, this often causes the connection to hang. Try switching wifi off, rebooting, and see if Mail works. If it works fine on 3G while wifi is off, you may need to reset your wifi settings on the iPhone (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings) and then reboot your wifi router (turn it off for 30 seconds, say, or issue a reboot command from its setting page), and wait a couple of minutes before attempting to reconnect to make sure both devices have forgotten each other. (It might take a few attempts, and waiting a couple of minutes, for both devices to properly forget the old connection.)

When I reset my wifi settings it cleared up the problem on my phone. Mail's been working fine for almost the whole day now. I hope this helps anyone else who recently upgraded to iOS 4.

Hmmm... but I (and I think others) have had the app hang while on 3G... not only just when using WiFi.... if it is a WiFi related issue with the phonoe going for a WiFi connection I would tend to think if any setting need to be re-set... it is those on the phone. I'll give it a try though and see what happens and report back.
