iOS4 Mail hanging

Hi

Updated a 3GS to iOS 4 and encountered several problems.

1) Wifi is no longer automatically joining preferred or known networks, have to go into Settings and manually join

2) Mail is hanging on "Checking for mail". A restart sorts the problem and mail can be downloaded, but then gets stuck straight away requiring a further restart.

Anyone else come across these, a search on here and google didn't unearth anything similar.

I have posted my experience elsewhere. All my mail accounts work fine via wifi at home but not at work even though the phone connects to the Internet. My pop and imap accounts get the same cannot connect to server message. The result is that wifi connects but I can neither send or receive emails via Mail. I have not tried connecting directly to my gmail account. I suspect that would work ok. This seems to be related to os4. I had same problem with iPhone 3G and now iPhone 4. However, I have the same issue with iPad.

@trekmac

It sounds like at your office, the firewall may be restricting certain ports. It makes sense that all of your devices are able to connect to the Internet because that traffic travels across port 80 which all firewalls allow. Mail and other apps do not communicate over port 80 and restrictive firewalls disallow it. I know of several corporations that block iTunes and its downloads.

I think my email is working OK again.

What I did (for another unrelated reason) was to RESTORE ALL SETTINGS, instead of only restoring the network settings (which didn't work when I tried it). I haven't quit the email program for a couple of days and it is still working, without a problem. I hope it will stay that way. I will report if it changes back to the wrong behavior.

I've paid pretty close attention to most all comments on this thread. Nothing really working. Tried resetting all settings; tried resetting network settings.

Mail still hanging up. Right now, I see spinning gear 'checking for mail' going and going and going.

Don't think it's a wi-fi thing. Don't think it's a mobilme thing. Problem seems somewhat intermittent but not sure.

What I'm doing to have some confidence of getting new mail is unclemikey76 tip re "double tap home to bring up task switching/management, hold mail icon until icons "dance" and hit the minus button on mail. You've just killed Mail from running in the background and can start over."

No future in dong this forever. We need a fix / guidance from Apple. Can anyone confirm that they really have acknowledged the problem? Lot to like in IOS4 but this email problem is really bad.

I've also tried re-setting various settings to no avail. Failures still occurr on WiFi or 3G. Have also had the E-mail app crash (self quit - close itself) a couple of times! Again, something that NEVER happened with the E-mail app on any of the versions of iOS3 I had. Fortunately closing the e-mail app out (via force quit or via the task bar closure) gets it back working.

All the issues that everyone is having out there I think "all of us" will experience very soon. I'm getting the impression from reading everyone's postings and responding myself to what I've found that "iphone 4 and the IOS 4 upgrade" is "Apple's BP debacle!"
It seems incredulous that none of these issues that are so obvious and so commonplace were never known by Apple engineers. This seems more likely that a "rush to market" was more important than reliability or quality assurance.

Have not been able to ever receive my POP email since I received/activated my new iPhone 4 on Thursday 6/24/10.

Deleted this email account on my iPhone and re-entered the same information.

Continue to receive the message that something must be entered incorrectly on my incoming mail server.

Co-worker with a 3GS, who also upgraded to the new 4iOS software, is not having any problems receiving or sending POP email.

Anyone found a solution yet??

Came here looking for an answer to this problem and found this thread.

One thing I noticed last night (6/27) was that the last updated date on my unified inbox was stuck at 6/24. After reading and trying some suggestions in this thread, I started going though my inboxes (I have five accounts setup) and found that my only exchange account for my work email was the one that hadn't been updated since 6/24. Even when I was killing the mail app and then restarting it, all the other inboxes were being checked, but exchange was not.

I then deleted my exchange account and set it up from scratch. Since doing this last night around 9pm, I have had no email problems at all. Not saying this will work for everyone, but if you have an exchange account (or maybe just one account that isn't updating) then I would try deleting it and setting it up again.

It may be worth mentioning that my mail accounts were installed on the iPhone 4 when I restored from my 3GS backup. I'm not sure if this caused the problem or not.

Good luck.
