27-inch / 27" iMac Random Shut down

SPECS:____________________________________________________________________________
• 27" 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 / 8gig / 1TB
• OS 10.6.3 (about to update to 10.6.4)
• All firmware updates have been applied according to software update
• 3 external drives: 1-320 gig 800fw / 1-TB USB 2.0 / 1-500gig USB 2.0

I've been running with this configuration ( 3 extra drives) since approximately December with no issues. Out of the blue... only running Aperture and Safari - my iMac JUST SHUTS off- WITHOUTwarning. It acted as though I was running a MacBook and the battery going dead/asleep. That's how random and sudden it shut down - NO WARNING. I did have the iMac asleep for about three hours before coming back to it to start working again when it shut down, but it should have even been cool.

I only started reading around on the web to see of other incidents after this random shut down this evening, but I can't find anything specific. I've found A LOT of similar things - all seemingly related to "HEAT."

And heat seems to be a certain issue recently - in the last day or two. Today I noticed my top back side to be hot, which isn't uncommon, however, it became so hot I really wasn't able to keep my hand on the top back. I've also noticed A LOT of spinning beach balls, and lots of processor delay! Heat??

There are NO energy saver pref's set to automatically shut it down. The power was and is firmly set. There are no network settings, nor access to the iMac to have it shut down. It is not shared with anyone on the network.

SUMMARY:___________________________________________________________________________

• Today, I grabbed a couple temp / monitor widgets and am trying to watch the data. All components seem to be at/around/below 140 degrees F with ambient air at 77 degrees. I don't know numbers, but that all seems reasonable.
• Going to update to OS 10.6.4 (doubt that's it!!)
• I'm going to run the hardware test from my disc to see if ANYTHING. 8-p
• AND... I'm going to call Apple to set up a case. It's still full under warranty, and I have 2 more years of AppleCare on it. But there's been too many things pointing to hardware to call this a software issue.

I've dodged all the display issues with my iMac, but now.. I'm a bit hacked knowing how much I spent on this thing, with the initial DELAYS I went through, ordering it before it had even been released!

?? QUESTION ??_____________________________________________________________________

So, has anyone else been having this issue, heard of a solution, seen anything on Apple's website of known issues ??

Are you replying to someone specific? I started this particular post YEARS ago. Dude... if you haven't - you should thoroughly read through the entire posts before suggesting any possible solution.


When I posted this years ago - I had been working with Apple's upper tier tech support and indirectly with Apple engineers for MONTHS on two different occasions for TWO different iMacs.


My first iMac got replaced, and then, the newer spec's, replacement model was basically gutted and had all the main components replaced. To this day, I still have near overheating issues, but for the most part - it's fully operating.


With all that said - it's very safe to say that "safe mode" and "recovery mode" has been done, suggested, done again, and re-suggested.

HERE IS THE FINAL DEFINITIVE SOLUTION FOR THE PROBLEM!!!!


We have only one solution:


Apple have to replace the power supply unit with a reinforced/modified one

to all the owner have random shutdown.

They replace the PSU and for a variable range of time, users does'nt have the problem.

But the PSU is the same of the original one with the same problem...

I had one of the very first 27", i7 iMacs. In fact, I preordered and then still ended up having to wait an extra month. Mine has an optic drive, which the newer ones don't and have additional, optional configurations, but it would seem Apple still hasn't figured out the issue that plagues the iMac.


I know you're not saying this, but... but as a former Apple employee I know Apple will 'never' say or call anything a "recall." They generally refer to a recall situation as a "repair extension programs" and they will always have those listed on their site, typically in the support area.


With that said - unless you can provide a knowledge base number of an extended repair program - you're absolutely incorrect about everything in your last reply. There is **NO** 'definitive solution' and to say so would be misleading to people. Not necessarily a power supply issue, and definitely not just a SMC issue.

I had this issue on TWO different iMacs and Apple never replaced the power supply, nor with any modified one. Now I admit - it's been (only) a couple years, but Apple could have changed their approach to this situation, but then again - I would ask you to provide an actual Apple post showing this.


In actuality - there really is no "one" solution, and unless documented otherwise BY Apple - they will treat every situation individually. It's a real pain in the ***, but as a former Apple Customer Relations employee - I can tell you that's the approach. I was painfully reminded of the "individual process" when I had to jump through all the Apple hoops, TWICE, for both of my iMacs.


Providing either of the links you gave to Apple feedback is not a preferred way to speak to support. In fact - it's merely a method of providing general feedback to Apple.


The best method is in fact is to speak with Apple tech support (of course - better if you have AppleCare or still in warranty) The next best resource is to get Customer Relations involved, and oddly enough, you'd be surprised how well an Apple Store will help. You're more likely to get action by talking with someone rather than through a feedback form in which you most likely will never hear back on.


And BTW - if you hadn't noticed - I'm the one who created and started this topic /string.

No.... the reply are still present.

If I render a video in imovie the mac shutdown.

if i try a backup with time machine the imac shutdown.....


someone has changed the CPU?

is it possible that the problem is with the higher of i7 or i5 and no with basic i7 or basic i5?


Changing power unit, ram, video board, main board don't resolve the problem.

but i never read of replacing of the CPU
