I received my iPhone 4 almost 2 hours ago from FEDEX and updated to the latest version of iTunes and have been unable to activate the phone. I get no errors from iTunes but after entering my AT&T account information, iTunes just sits while processing request and I have let it go for spans of 20minutes and up at a time before restarting the process.
I called AT&T and they saw no issues on my account and forwarded me to Apple tech support from which I just got off the phone with and they told me activations for the iPhone 4 are done by my carrier instore (AT&T) and iPhone activations cannot be done through iTunes. Has anyone else been told this? Or have any delays trying to activate the phone via iTunes?
This worked for me. I had waited nearly 5 hours for activation through itunes, yet when i dialed 611 from the old iphone and followed the prompts, i got instant activation on my iPhone 4.
i went to the AT&T store 6 hours ago to pick it up, and they set it up, told me it would be 30 minutes roughly, and i'd have my phone working.
no activation confirmation message for me yet. and my other phone has been broken for 2 weeks already. so i still have no working phone. i can't even load songs on it without getting snow leopard. LAME.
They had the same problem in the apple store itself, the manager started telling the sales guys to do a soft reboot if it wont activate as that seems to fix the problem
I just got mine tonight - waited up to 2 hours as recommended but it still didn't activate. Reseated the SIM card, power cycled the phone to no effect. After Resetting the Network Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings) and the mandatory reboot the phone immediately activated. Hope this helps someone!
I just got my iphone4 in the store today and the Apple employee said he "activated" my phone so that it would work. A text came up in the phone window that said, "Activating... this may take a while." After 15 minutes of it not doing anything, he turned it on airplane mode and then turned it off stating that this would jump start the activation.
4 hours later my new iphone4 was still not activated, and my old iphone 3g also had no service. I read this blog and it said to call 611 from your phone, except how do you call 611 from a phone that doesn't work? So I called 1-800-331-0500, which is AT&T customer support from a land line. The AT&T worker told me to power down my phone, then he sent a reactivation to my phone, and told me to power it back on and that did the trick!
Also, I have not yet plugged into iTunes and my phone still works.
Got the phone over 7 hours ago and it still has not activated. This is BS. If it isn't activated by the morning, this will undoubtedly be the last Apple product I ever purchase. Like someone said before, I cannot call from my old iPhone because I don't have service. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Problem solved with a quick call to ATT. When I bought the iPhone, there was a faulty SIM card, which the Apple staff quickly replaced (out of my sight)-without activating it first. I may not be an Apple techie, but even I know enough to activate a SIM card before putting it in the phone. I had a fantastic customer service rep from ATT who quickly activated the card, and now I can finally enjoy my phone (18 hours after purchasing it).
