iPhone 4 not activating?

I received my iPhone 4 almost 2 hours ago from FEDEX and updated to the latest version of iTunes and have been unable to activate the phone. I get no errors from iTunes but after entering my AT&T account information, iTunes just sits while processing request and I have let it go for spans of 20minutes and up at a time before restarting the process.

I called AT&T and they saw no issues on my account and forwarded me to Apple tech support from which I just got off the phone with and they told me activations for the iPhone 4 are done by my carrier instore (AT&T) and iPhone activations cannot be done through iTunes. Has anyone else been told this? Or have any delays trying to activate the phone via iTunes?

Parker, I am also an AT&T customer. I got my iPhone about 10:45 am this morning and had it activated with iTunes in about 2 minutes after I put in my AT&T information. You DO NOT have to go to a store----that is just simply not true. You can activate and sync through iTunes like before. Don't let anyone tell you any other thing.

Keep plugging away with iTunes---it might just be server problems.

Mine arrived just before 10:00 a.m. (Pacific) and I immediately opened and activated it. The whole process took about two minutes. If only the initial sync would go so quickly! ; )

I agree with the other posters that you're likely experiencing some server slowdown due to the high volume of connections. I noticed that when I went to open the Apple website the main page wouldn't load beyond the link bar at the top - But when I clicked on Support to come here the rest of the site responded normally. I expect that connecting with Apple via phone or online is going to be problematic for the next two or three days. Just keep trying -I'm sure you'll get the phone activated today. 🙂

There have been several threads over the last couple days with iOS4 upgrades and such that also had the underlying iTunes upgrade in the process and once they rebooted the computer things seemed to fix themselves in MOST cases... Give it a shot and let us know.

I also am having issues activating the iphone 4. As soon as I connect it to itunes it tells me it is attempting to access the online store and never does. If I disconnect the phone from the computer I can access the store fine. Not sure whats going on. I also tried calling the apple number however all that did was deactive my old iphone. The new one is still say connect to itunes on the screen.

And now I have no phone to call ATT or Apple with

any ideas?
