Switching providers

I'm on T-Mobile now. If I preorder the iPhone 4 and get it on July 14th, at what point do I officially transfer from T-Mobile to AT&T? Is it when I activate it, or do I have to worry about some interim period during which I might not get any cell phone service?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.2), 2.4 GHz 4GB 667 MHz SDRAM

I'm pretty sure it's when you activate it. It's always weird, like my dad transfered his number from Metro PCs to Sprint and he couldn't use his phone for 3 days because that's how long it took his number to transfer. But in this case, i'm sure it'll be instantly when you activate it.
