I mean the switch won't work from landscape to portrait.
Maybe I don't understand you, but are you thinking there's an actual switch (as in button or setting) that changes the phone to landscape? I have a 3G and there's no switch or setting and I'm guessing there isn't one on the 4. You just turn the phone on it's side to go from portrait to landscape. Again, maybe I'm not undestanding your issue.......
when i turn the phone sideways, nothing is happening. I can't look at pictures right or scroll through my albums.
sorry, I'm not sure how to help you.......
maybe you have a defective accelerometer
Make sure that you don't have the orientation lock turned on. Double click the home button to get the multi-tasking bar, swipe it to the left and you'll see the audio controls as well as a button that can lock the orientation. Make sure that this is not selected.
Yup defective accelerometer, going to apple store. tech support gives up.
Thank you Shadow99999. Your tip solved my issue as well.
Try reset all settings under settings icon. Works for me.
Just got my phone yesterday as well and I am having this same issue. the orientation worked fine yesterday in every program (text, email, safari, etc.) and today i opened up safari and it would not turn. What was strange is when i went into email it was already turned to landscape mode and would not turn back. I tried a series of things to fix it and it is still not working.
- rebooted using home button + lock
- reset all settings under general preferences
- tried turning orientation lock on and off
still nothing. Ill have to call apple when i get off work. waiting to hear if other people are having this same issue.. ive been searching the web and this was the first post I came across that was having the exact same problems.

I've had an iPhone 3GS for over a year now, and the orientation switching within programs USED to work fine for me. After the OS4.0 update I also get this same issue.
This is very annoying as you would guess, and I'm patiently awaiting an update to fix this issue.
Workaround;
when I want to switch orientation, I bring up the 'orientation lock' and hit it twice. This seems to allow it to change once.

I found that worked for me as well (clicking orientation to locked and the immediately clicking it again to unlock) whatever application I opened right after would rotate once and then just stop working again.
What's even stranger though, is since my post an hour ago my orientation seems to be working fine.

Jobs was monitoring this forum and saw your post, and sent an OTA ping to your phone to fix it. In an hour, he's going to send another one to "break it", then after you post about it, he'll ping your phone again to fix it. 🙂
I'm going to continue testing it constantly to see if I can get the issue again. It definitely seems to be some sort of bug because I tried for more then 2 hours originally to fix it and nothing worked. Mysteriously it fixed itself out of no where.......
Well here's a fun update .. I restarted my iPhone and now it's switching the orientation fine.
Before I restarted it I closed all my applications I had open [I had about 10 open via the multi-tasking menu]. I then opened up my mail and was unable to switch orientation, so I restarted the device. Perhaps this has something to do with the new 'multi-tasking' feature??
I hope this doesn't continue .. I would hate having to restart my iPhone everytime the orientation locks up like this.
