Since the update, I have had a multitude of problems! I am so glad to have found this forum. My email downloads deleted emails that are in my comcast account onto my phone. after i did the update, the phone tried to download 413 messages. there are other issues since the update, but this is the most disruptive. anyone have any suggestions? i have to go into comcast and delete all my messages a couple times a day. what a mess.

I'm not so sure this a multi-tasking issue, per the following.

Experienced the same "fetching" issue when changing from a 3G to 3GS phone that was mad available by my son's iP4 upgrade. Anyway, I imported the swbell/att email accounts from Outlook, they came across as "Yahoo" and functioned fine except for the fetching that I couldn't kill. I deleted the accounts on the iPhone and manually created as "other" not Yahoo. Working perfectly since.

Just in case anyone is also still suffering from this issue, the best bet is to log it with Apple support. I just called them on UK (44) 0844 209 0611. Amazingly it seems this is the first they've heard of this issue, so its very important more people log it. This will help to get it escalated.

Just to confirm from further testing I've done, it seems to only be an issue for my Yahoo email account, which has push capabilities but is always set to manual. Tt DOES "push" the email to my phone, not "fetch" it, as I just had about 3 separate pings of messages in the space of 5 mins.

So - if you've also got the issue, call the number above and get it logged. The sooner we all do this, the sooner a repair can be built.

I haven't noticed this problem since I have Yahoo set to push, but there are a lot of problems with Yahoo Mail and iOS 4 that occur periodically. A few I've found are:

1. Frequently the phone won't check for mail when the phone is first started (rebooted). Using the IPhone Configuration Utility, I've found that this seems to be caused by an issue where the Yahoo login cookie expires, but the iPhone won't retrieve the stored password to re-login because it claims the password isn't stored. I think this is related to enabling the Calendar in the Yahoo account settings, but I'm not positive about that. The fix is to remove the Yahoo account, reboot the phone and re-add the account. The fix is temporary since the problem will occur again within 2 weeks (usually less than a week).

2. Push stops working. If it randomly stops working I've found that the only solution is to remove the Yahoo account, reboot the phone and re-add the account. If it stops working after the phone is reboot, turn off push for about a minute and turn it back on. I've gotten in the habit of sending myself a test message every time I reboot the phone since there's a high chance that push will simply stop working after doing so.

3. Push won't work at all no matter what you do. Oddly enough adding another mail account to the phone fixes this. It can even be a GMail account. After you add the account and get Yahoo working, you can delete the added account. That tells me something is screwed up with mail account settings.

Note, that killing the Mail app won't accomplish anything since the iPhone will just restart the mail application if there are any mail account stored on the phone. It can temporary fix issues where there is missing mail, but once you get to that point the mail database is corrupted and the only fix is to remove the mail accounts, reboot the phone and re-add the accounts.

I've contacted Yahoo about the problems with Yahoo mail and the iOS 4 and supposedly Yahoo is working with Apple to correct them, but I wouldn't hold your breathe.

I've just read all the entries in this discussion and 'YES, IT'S DOING MY HEAD IN TOO'. I always have had my phone set to manual fetch for both my work exchange account and my personal hotmail account. Emails are randomly downloaded, sometimes twice a day, sometimes only once a day. I get emails downloaded which I have already deleted once. This is not the only Iphone setting that does not do what it should but it is without doubt the most annoying. Apple - please fix it.

My iPhone 4 has the same problem and so does my mother in law's 3G. Ever since doing the update, my mail fetches even when I don't have it set to and even if I close the program down in multitasking. My mother in law ended up using 300 MB of data in a couple days from it. My data also went up exorbitantly after the update. I had to delete my mail account completely to get it stop. I downloaded Yahoo's mail app to use instead.

But that's really annoying. I was hoping they'd fix the problem in an update. But when I called Apple they said they hadn't heard of the problem.

AARG...yes, that's just what is happening to me. I updated my iPhone 3G
to the latest iOS4 last night ... ever since then I have 2 particular email accounts that persistently re-fetch messages that I've already deleted.

I have my mail settings so that deleting a message on the iPhone does not delete it on the server. I like it this way (so that I keep a permanent record of my mail, but not on my iPhone). in iOS 3xx this was fine, and the server was told "I already down-loaded that one"...but now (my guess), iOS4 is not telling the server that a message has been downloaded.

Grrr. (*reaching for iPhone 0.01 aka post-it notes*)
