Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Wow, I purchased one of the 1st generation iPhones, then an iPhone 3g for my wife. I loved both. I gave my 1st gen. iPhone to my daughter and intended on purchaseing an new iPhone 4 for myself. After reviewing the forums and reading this thread and the antenna thread, I'm canceling my order! I'm NOT buying an iPhone 4 until Apple fixes these issues. I hope Apple reads this and sees they are starting to lose sales and quickly fixes this issue!

Good Luck! Apple these people have put up hard earned money! Fix the problems!

I have only seen a few post that document the distance in which the proximity sensor activates and deactivates the screen. My iPhone 4 shuts the screen off between 3/4 - 1 inch away. I had remembered that the other three versions of iPhone I had where in the range of 2 - 3 inches. My mother still has a 3GS running the most current version of 3.0 software. I have not had the chance to test it but I know the distance to be far more than 1 inch. If you were to measure the distance of the earpiece from your ear with your cheek touching the screen, that distance is very very close to the 3/4 range. Simply move the phone above your ear slightly and now that distance is closer to 1 1/4 inch. I have done the reset all settings, reset network settings, power off, hard reset, restore to factory plus restore from backup, and restore to factory then reset all settings and setup as new phone with no restore from backup. At various points along the way I tested the proximity distance and it never once changed. The very first night I used the phone I did notice it flickered during my phone call as it did in the video referenced in this thread. I have not seen that happen since all the resetting and restoring but it is still EXTREMELY easy to reactivate the screen during a phone call with the phone placed between your shoulder and head, casual phone conversation (I don't like to jam the phone tight to my ear as it gets hot and uncomfortable), and laying in bed on the phone. I suppose if you use the two finger death grip to mash the phone to your ear, it seems to work fine. BTW - I purchased 3 iPhone 4's and all three of them have a prox distance of 3/4 - 1 inch. Please post your measurements. I would be curious to know the distance of all the previous models with ver 3 software and version 4 software.... I am praying this is a software issue. Different prox switches have different sensitivity ranges and there is only so much software can do.... A 1.7 million phone recall would suck. BTW#2 - I still love my iPhone and every Apple product I own.

My 3Gs proximity activation range was about 2 inches (I sold it today used for $300). The new iPhone 4 range is 3/4 to an inch for proximity activation. This shorter distance is the problem. I hope this can be fixed in a firmware/software update. This is my second unit. They replaced my first one on Sunday at the Apple store. My first unit also had the death grip issue with the antennas. My second unit does not so I was at least glad to see that all units do NOT have the grip issue. That issue didn't really matter as much for me since I use a case anyway but the proximity issue is going to be a deal breaker if not fixed quickly. I will wait a week to see. If not, I will be returning my phone and going back to a $99 refurb 3Gs. I have been an Apple fan since the 80s and 90s. I would hate to see Apple come all this way just to falter here. This is very upsetting. Steve please don't let us all down... This is just what the "Android" market wants. I hope Apple doesn't get arrogant and replay the whole Mac/Windows saga all over again. This would be a very sad thing...
