Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

yeap, i have this exact issue...i put people on mute because of this.

I have experienced the same exact issue. I keep pressing buttons with my cheek during a phone call and it gets extremely annoying. Apple needs to fix this with a software update as soon as possible!

I'm having problems with proximity sensor as well. I will be on a call and want to end it. I remove the iPhone 4 from my face and the screen remains blank, so its impossible to end the call. I press the home button and the power button and nearly all the time, the screen stays off. I will be going back to Apple this week to complain.
I like the phone, so hope something can be done.

Same problem here on my iPhone 4. Never had the problem on my 3G model. Hopefully os update will fix this very soon. I've accidentally hit several buttons with my cheek during conversations.

I am having the same issue. I put my iPhone4 in a leather case that I used for my 3GS (case is much too big for the iPhone 4) and the screen kept going blank during the call and ended up disconnecting several times.

If I use the iPhone4 out of the case, I don't experience the screen going blank, disconnects or random mute button activations. At least not so far, but I will keep making calls to verify.

UPDATE:

With my new phone, and after all my test calls, I have just disconnected my wife on my first real call. My cheek must have hit disconnect because it was definitely not a dropped call and I have full bars.

I feel this is serious now and I'm truly disappointed.

I can confirm that I too, am having a problem with the proximity sensor..

What I am noticing is that there is a slight delay in the proximity sensory actuating. When you put the phone towards your face there is a small period of time that the phone input is still on allowing your face to depress something on the screen.

I too am having this problem. Happens frequently. Never happened on any of the earlier iphones I had. Quite disconcerting. Hope this is a software problem that can be fixed with an update.

I'm having the exact same issue. Proximity sensor detect light far too easily, which seems to make me accidentally make calls with my cheek. Never once had this type of problem in 3 years of owning an iPhone 2g, although that one had to be replaced 5 times until I actually got a bug-free one. I guess this Apple has Bugs. Steve, perhaps you can put that in your next Pixar movie?

The unfortunate thing is that I must unsubscribe to this thread because it is giving soooooo many emails since soooo many users are having this issue.

I have never seen an apple issue this big before by so many users and unfortunately I need to unsubscribe because of the traffic on this issue, and will probably miss conversations relating to eventual fixes, but it's a shame apple won't come out public about this and that so many apple support people don't know about this or just say switch the phone. It's unbelievable. Where is Steve Jobs during this? Stop advertising facetime and start fixing phone basics 101. Stop focusing on marketing and focus on basic functionality!!

This is very unfortunate. Apple should provide some sort of acknowledgment of this issue or risk loosing the trust of so many loyal customers.

I am too facing this issue but I have started living with it as my all previous iphone models had same issue with proximity sensor. iPhone 4 experience has been awful 😟

Just a theory. Usually the proximity sensor is a light detection sensor that tries to measure the reflected light. Now The iphone screen is plastic and has some amount of light already reflecting inside , especially if there's an air bubble. It can also be caused if the screen is little mirrored.

I wonder if these screen protectors are causing the problems.

Yes I used the 3GS case and same problem. It is better with the bumper case. If it cannot be fixed with an OS update, this is a major issue.
