Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Just got my iPhone 4 yesterday. It shipped straight from Shenzchen, (sp?) China (directly from Foxconn's plant there). It arrived about 36 hours later (pretty impressive). So basically, it's a brand new batch of iPhones straight from the factory.

My first non-speakerphone call lasted about 2 minutes, and the screen flashed on and off around 5 times (when I noticed it, I rotated the phone from my ear and saw it glitch over and over while holding it as still as possible).

I did not restore the phone from my backup, so it has "virgin" OS files on it.

Pretty ridiculous.

Well as a final attempt to fix this issue, Im gonna try the following:

1- Restore iPhone as a new phone ( not using any sort of backup )
2 - Syncing my contacts, apps, music , etc
3- setting up my exchange server at work, logins for air videa and other apps directly from the phone

My objective is not to use any kind of backup from my old configurations that had the proximity sensor issue. I dont believe this will work but at this point, Ill try anything.

Also, my wifes iPhone 4 shipped and will be here Monday. Im hoping hees doesnt have the problem. Its coming out of Texas so Im not sure what to think or if that means anything at all. I just hope hers doesnt have that problem then Ill take her old 3GS and return this paperweight iphone 4 and wait until they resolve all these issues

I agree. This forum has become my most visited website while on vacation.
Bottom line: I've tried all fixes, on iP4 #2, it is not as bad as the first one, but any call over 5 minutes and it goes all bazook. *Also, my photos app gets all screwy with certain pics turning into black squares - so that's (yet) another issue on this phone. (another thread entirely).
I'm beginning to really, really wonder if an update can fix all this... re-freaking-diculous.
Apple's DEAD SILENCE on the issue is anything but reassuring at this point too.
Lastly, I'd assume the odds of Steve Jobs' iP4 (also) cheek dialing are pretty good. Wouldn't you? ;-|

Spoke to apple support rep who was well aware of the issue and who had read this discussion topic. He suggested that restore had helped resolve perhaps 40% of the problem. He agrees that, whilst I could exchange the phone, it probably wouldn't make any difference at all.

This is an UTTERLY DISGRACEFUL state of affairs made all the worse by apple's head in the sand corporate culture.

Hi

Every call im in gets muted, put on hold or hung up on...

Im very disappointed with Apple and this product....

Im also very disappointed that Apple feels its ok to sit and wait for Hackers to show their cards before fixing the issues that are there with customer’s handsets...

End of the day the hackers will always find a way on your phones and i think that 40% of your customers would only buy the iPhone knowing they could jailbreak so i think Steve Jobs needs to stop leaving a dream world and admit this phone at the moment is complete rubbish....

Mate, why are you wasting your time trying to sort this out? EVERY Iphone 4 has this issue, that's right EVERY. Regardless whether it's from a backup or a clean. Some people I know have had their handset replaced 3 times. Ridiculous situation.

Yep same here, this is my second iPhone the first did the same and this one IMO is worse!

I cant believe after queing at 6 in the morning this is what i get and we get fobbed off with just restore with itunes it will be fine and Apple wont release any fix's until the hackers release their Jailbreak..

Apple if you did things right in the first place you would not have to release an update at all so do the right thing and release it, the iPhone will be jailbroken either way.

This problem makes the iphone 4 unusable. I could not get it fixed by the geniuses so I was forced to return it. Bought a new Blackberry Bold 9700 with no issues whatsoever. Very disappointed that Apple would release a product that continually drops calls, mutes calls, puts calls on speakerphone, makes dialing tones while on a call and still has BT problems mated to my car. Very disappointed. Shame on Apple. Waited 8 hours in line (in 95 degree heat) for this piece of crap!

Good move mate,

People who own the iPhone and have the problems need to think of it like this..

If you buy a new tv and it regularly turns itself off in the middle of your favourite programme would you return it??? I think the answer is yes. The main purpose of a tv is to be able to watch programmes.

We have bought a phone and it cuts calls off therefore why arent we returning it? The main purpose of the iphone it to be able to call people and talk to them until we or they wish to end the call.

I have not had this problem and have been using the phone since the 24th. I have noticed the sensor seems less sensitive compared to my old 3G. I hold the phone at a bit of an angle keeping the earpiece and sensor close to my ear and it has been perfect so far. I am not denying this is a problem for many and I believe Apple will adjust the sensitivity with the next update but try to keep the glass around the sensor clean and keep the earpiece close to your ear and this will help, I hope.
