iPhone 4 will not turn on

The title says it all. I opened the box. I plugged it into my MacBook. Nothing. I pressed the buttons, held the buttons, tried a different cable, connected it to the charger and waited an hour...

nothing.

Anyone know anything that can make a good iPhone refuse to turn on, or did I get a bad one?

I guess the hard part for me is that the reason I trashed the Blackberry Storm and came to the IPhone 4 was to get away from PROBLEMS. I was talking on the phone when my phone went black and would not come back on for half an hour, then the hard reboot worked, but for how long?

I guess the real disturbing part for me is that clealy this is an issue and yet no APPLE techs came on the board to assure us we would not suffer a loss for the poor workmanship of their product.

I would think Apple, who touts near perfection and bullet proof technology, would be quick to leap in and assure everyone who has this problem will be taken care of immediately with a new phone, regardless of warranties or whether the phone was an AT&T phone or Verizon, it's not the service provider that is at fault, it is the phone manufacturer... APPLE!

Yet... Apple remains silent.

I just had the SAME thing happen to me about 20 minutes ago. Out of no where the phone just turned off. No response from any buttons or charging it. I finally gave up, VERY upset considering this is why i got rid of my blackberry for the iphone4, thank god for this post because the sleep/home combo worked after about 20 seconds holding them together. im concerned i might have gotten a bad phone..? i cant have this happen to me i travel alot and cant worry about if my phone is gonna lock up on me and maybe not turn back on the next time while im on the thruway with no way to contact anyone in case of an emergency. thank you everyone for your helpful tips and i will be contacting verizon/apple to see if i should send into warranty or if its just a fluke one time thing, well see :/

The same thing happened to my IPhone. i pressed the locked button and it turned off. when i tried to turn it back on it didn't work. I held the buttons but it didn't work. then i held the power+home button for a few seconds then i let it go. the apple logo came on and it was fixed. if that doesn't work you might want to reset it but you might lose everything you have unless it's saved on your compter.

I was uploading a video on Facebook when my phone went black, gone, nothing anymore on it at all! Tried to turn it on all night, plug it in onto the wall and the computer this morning. Finally I googled it and found you guys' advice to hold the home button and the on/off button and luckily it worked... The apple came on and then the phone started. I encountered this before but I was able to turn the phone back on!!! Not too sure why it is doing this but I know it seems to be a problems when downloading a video onto Facebook with the 3G network.

Anyway thanks so much guys as I was worried and did not want pay for another expensive i-phone 4!!!!

Okay, I had dropped my iphone4 while playing High Noon today and it totally went off and there was no display, and I could not power up the phone using the startup button. I believe the impact of the fall was not too big as my phone was wrapped in a silicon case and kept in a soft pouch. I was also sitting on the couch so the drop distance was only a couple of feet.

I tried pluging the charger into the phone and pressed the start button. It finally boot up and I was able to use it again but the time and date had been reset to Jan 1, 1970. The no-display issue immediately after the drop was really worrying and I am not sure if the problem will arise again after some time. Another thing I had observed is that the phone will become hot after some usage and this heat issue was not noticeable before this.

Is the iphone really that fragile that a slight bump will brick it?

The phone is only about a week old and not jailbroke. As the phone appears to be working now, do you think Apple customer service will even entertain me on this?
