Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Irons you can try this "magical" process to get to 3.1.3 again, just takes a few steps to follow closely but yes you can.

For both PC and MAC:
http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g%5Bs%5D-from-ios-4- to-ios-313

I just downgraded my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and it works just as before. Familiar icons, speed is back. Just pay attention to all the steps as there are unique files for 3G versus the 3GS model, each of which are listed there.

Now 24 hours after iOS4 update, running 8 web pages, under heavy usage battery life remained consistent with 3.1.3, standby time is usual.

I am experiencing no slow downs that a lot of people in this thread speak of.

Are you all completely wiping your iPhones and updating? A problem with mine forced me to wipe mine, no back up, started fresh.

I did mine on a fresh install of W7, fresh install of 9.2 iTunes, and fresh iPhone software upgrade using USB 1.1.

This all seems to be pointing towards a corruption issue.

Following double reboot and no change. I spoke with staff at ATT no solutions and spoke with apple who said like many on here restore.....I did this through itunes and set up as new phone I was all backed up first and use mobileme. I have reset everything now and it does seem much better generally faster than it was text is still slower to open but considerably faster that before restore. Just make sure that when you back it up copy the back up to somewhere else before you reconnect the phone and disable automatic sync. It seems to have overridden my previous backup.

lets see how it goes over the next few days.............

before going back, have you tried a double re-boot it's dead easy to do, and takes not very long - and it's sorted the problem for many people ...

double reboot = press power button and home button at the same time, hold until 'phone reboots (ignore the power-off prompt slide bar, keep holding) ... let 'phone start-up normally (Apple logo) ... when it's all done & ready for action, immediately do it again - ie: repeat this process (don't be tempted to do anything in-between) ...

Unfortunately there is no solution.

As i have posted elsewhere, I have had numerous conversations with Apple staff by phone, email and at two Apple Stores and, whilst they all admit to the problem, no one has a fix. One Apple Store member of staff told me his 3G is "slow as a slug with iOS4" but he didn't mind as he was getting an iPhone 4 the following week.

None of the suggested ideas re: resets, restores, close windows, etc., make the slightest difference. It also appears that the problem is worse on older 3G phones.

Apple have screwed up big time. They would have known about this from beta testing (if they didn't, then they should outsource their beta testing) but they chose not to inform the public.

It's atrocious and I expected better from them.

@GarryRobson,
It's a sad commentary. I agree with you 100%. I wish I had the opportunity to simply replace my 3G with an iPhone 4. Unfortunately, I have over a year left on my contract, and my service provider doesn't even offer the new phone yet.

The "power+home press & hold until reboot, twice" meths helped me but e problem crept back up after a few hours.

The fact it's better after that process, but creeps back in again, seems to mimic a memory leak--much in the same way Windows 95 through ME would require a restart to get performance back. Maybe this will be addressed.

I'll say this--if there are no further software/firmware updates released for iPhone 3G it will be a huge mistake. Even bigger than releasing iOS4 for 3G models in the first place.

Everybody reporting better speeds with 4.0.1 on 3G's are deluding themselves, I'm sure? The 4.0.1 update does ONE thing and ONE thing alone: +"Improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display."

Yes, they are deluding themselves, *there is no speed increase for 3G iPhones with iOS 4.0.1.* I decided to update both of my 3G iPhones, and they both run just as slow and with apps crashing just as much as with 4.0. No difference.

Before I got my new iPhone 4, I had the iPhone 3G and have to say, I experienced these same performance "lags". In iBooks, as you said, the page-turns were delayed and switching between home screens dragged along. Sadly, a software update can't & won't fix this. The iPhone 3G's slower hardware just performs slower with iOS 4, a software update might be able to improve speed somewhat but nothing significant.

If your only goal is to stubbornly bash Apple for this, feel free to do so. If your goal instead is to be constructive, bash Apple for something else (there are plenty of reasons) and try to solve the remaining problem with your phone.

Bashing Apple? How exactly am I doing that? I'm simply trying to save people from having to restore, re-install or any of the other time-consuming "tricks" people keep posting here that could potentially brick their phones, because they simply won't work, and any perceived speed increase is either that -- perceived -- or temporary.

Secondly, Apple said that iOS 4.0.1 only contains a fix for how the phone reports reception quality and new bar graphics. Had 4.0.1 also fixed the problems 3G iPhone users have been posting about here in great numbers, it's unlikely Apple would have forgotten to mention this. The reason it wasn't mentioned is because they haven't fixed the problem yet. More likely is that 3G iPhone owners will get a fix in the iOS 4.1 release.

How about you try to help those still with problems rather than ranting about me sharing my own advice regarding iOS 4, which, by the way, has been corroborated by many others who've posted in this thread.

I even swapped it out at Apple for a brand new handset thinking it was the hardware. The brand new handset wasn't running iOS4, which itself should have been a dead giveaway. Immediately after updating to iOS4 it's back to apps crashing & everything else that people are complaining of. I'd go back to Apple & swap again, only my last swap was the very last day of Applecare.

Did you restore your old backup to the new phone, or did you set it up as a new phone?

Did you check with Applecare about yet another replacement? I thought they could be flexible, and that new hardware prolonged the deal somehow.

Hi Carlos,
I noticed this same thing. I posted it several days ago, but received no response. I even started a separated thread suggesting that the "folders" might be at least part of the problem, but my thread was deleted by Apple. For me, and the friends that I know who have 3G phones, eliminating all of the folders has solved the problem. My phone is quick and responsive again, and I am very happy.
I liked the idea of the "folders", but it is not worth slowing down my phone. I don't know why people don't seem interested in trying this idea? I guess it just seems to simple?

when i upgraded to 4.0 (& 4.0.1) I didnt get any ibooks (only things i noticed was folders, which isnt any quicker than swiping anyway) it then told you how many characters youve used typing a text (thanks apple, something that should have been on the iphone from the start) & being able to create playlists on the iphone (again something most mp3 players have done for years)

the bad points was everything slower (with 4.0 & 4.0.1) especially opening text messages, settings or camera (taking on average 4 times longer to open)
some programs ran jerky too (though rarely had programs crashing) have had problems with the swipe to answer a call too though.

I gave up & downloaded 3.1.3 again & reinstalled it using 3rd party programs, not too difficult to do, but it did wipe everything from the phone (inc phone numbers etc) so if your doing it, back everything up 1st.

my phones now enjoyable to use again & all my apps seem to work fine (even the ones updated to work with 4.0)

officially 4.0.1 does not do anything but inprove how the signal is calculated & shown (check before you install in the installer) so if you had a speed increase its the placebo effect or blind luck. (i didnt find i got better signal reception, though the bars were bigger displayed)

hope thats of help to you all sffering & if you are still suffering, do what i did. if enough people keep using 3.1.3 maybe apple will take notice.
