Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Same here. I still get a slight hesitation every once in a while after Safari or the iPod player has been used. But otherwise so far, it seems better. For some reason those two apps along with Mail stay "open" even after you quit them. FreeMemory shows they are still using memory. I wonder why they keep appearing as being running? The 3G can't multitask so what's the point that they don't close? Only these Apple apps do this.

Updated my wifes 3G to OS 4.2 and it is still horribly slow. Its like everything is in slow motion. What can be done to fix the problem? I have restored, rebooted and tried all the stupid little tips and tricks. I have been told for months now that the fix is coming in the next software update. This is the 2nd one and still nothing. How long do we have to wait before they fix the problem. I want OS3 back!!

What about the Calendar app? That is my main one. Is it still laggy to load and refresh?

In my iPhone Calendar App with 4.2.1 is faster than 4.1 in all the views, never had a problem with that. Is someone has problems it could depend on how many events you have, if you have mobileme synchronizations, so every configuration may behave differently.

I went from 4.1 to 4.2. I found that 4.2 was better than 4.1 but I was still seeing delays of 1-2 seconds sometimes between my finger touching the screen and the response on-screen and, on occasion, delays of 3-4 seconds too; the only applications I use are the phone, contacts, reading simple emails, texts, Calendar, occasional Notes and Clocks. I have no 'added' applications and never use the other pre-installed apps like iPod, iTunes, Photos or Maps.

On my main computer I'm still on iTunes 9 and decided to revert to 3.1.3. I found 3.1.3 reliably responsive and it eliminated the continuing, tho reduced, delays I was seeing with 4.2. I tried 4.2 and 3.1.3 within an hour of each other and I definitely found 3.1.3 quicker and more reliable on the simple stuff I do. So for the foreseeable future, I shall be sticking with 3.1.3

Can anyone tell me - if I were to upgrade iTunes to 10, would this prevent me from re-installing 3.1.3 in the future if I should need to? Is there anything about running iTunes 10 which would force me to "upgrade" to IOS 4 again? and is there anything I'd NOT be able to do with iTunes 10 which I can with iTunes 9?

Thanks for your help.

How did you upgrade to 4.2? On another machine with updated iTunes?

I kept up with the iTunes updates (currently 10.1) and it asked me along the way if I wanted to download the new iOS4, then iOS4.1, and yesterday the iOS4.2. Each time I said "cancel" and checked the box to stop it from asking me again in the future. So, I've been able to maintain iOS3.1.3. HOWEVER, if I had said yes to any of them, I believe I would have lost the ability to revert back to 3.1.3.

Thanks for posting your experience. Very helpful.

When I open iTunes on my main computer it has been asking me for some time if I'd like to install 10 and each time I've just said no. (So I'm still on 9)

Within iTunes, on the iPhone bit, when I was still on 3.1.3, under 'Summary' it asked me if I'd like to upgrade to 4.1 and I said 'yes' - and found I couldn't go back by any Apple Authorised route; When it asked me if I'd like to upgrade to 4.2 I said 'yes'.

To revert to 3.1.3 I used a method not authorised by Apple but I will say "Google is your friend and Lifehacker is perhaps your best friend!"
