Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

yep, a few weeks down the line, my 3G running iOS 4 .2.1 continues to be fine ...

I occasionally borrow my wife's 3G (which is still on '3.1.3), and notice it's faster on some things, slower on others, though not significantly ...

of course, when eventually we update to the latest iPhone (*) we'll likely think think both are terrible !

(*) wonder when the next hardware update is to be expected ?

"I'm still at a loss to understand why anyone is having issues".
Anyone who knew the reason why people are having issues could then fix those same issues. All you're saying is that you're no smarter than Apple's entire team are.

"Maybe the problem phones had been hacked and restored and through that process have been corrupted."
My phone was not hacked and restored. NOTHING had been done to it which was not recommended by Apple themselves.

These 2 comments do not make a constructive contribution to the thread. They merely cast aspersions on many of those who have posted in it.

I'm at a loss as to why your phone is "quick and snappy" with 4.2.1. Is your phone hacked?

I have never hacked my phone, and it runs like crap with iOS 4.x Please consider yourself to be one of the lucky ones if you have a useable phone.

ours have been fine battery-wise, one now on 3.1.3, the other now on 4.2.1 ... indeed, given they are both quite old now (we got them on the 3G's first day, IIRC), it's maybe remarkable the batteries are still fine ! Both still keep charge for several days, three to five, typically, say, with just occasional sudden drop-offs (full charge when we last looked, dead a few hours later, presumably due to bad signal, perhaps due to shielding by something when we put them down in a daft place) ...

I thought 4.2 had improved matters, but yesterday the Maps app crashed four times in a row, the last one necessitating a hard reset (which took almost 10 minutes), after which the Messages app repeatedly crashed while loading. In the meantime I tried to use the Phone app and could only get the keypad, no contacts or other options along the bottom.

All in all, for upwards of 15-20 minutes, the most basic functions of my phone were totally inaccessible.

So much for 4.2 I guess.

Cmon, you should all know by now the last OS or similar proprietary software update provided by Apple before a new to be paid for release is due seems to yield the worst performance for that version. It definitely has in my experience.

Gee, and I didn't think they'd drop the ball with their now much loved consumer products as they have with their pro products.

Well my phone just took 2 hours to sync with iTunes and the result was 2 podcasts added to my phone. I manually manage music so my sync processes were usually about 5-7 minutes prior to iOS 4/4.1/4.2

I looked at the Samsung Captivate this weekend and will be picking one up this week for a demo and may be able to switch over to it for the upgrade eligible price of the phone. This is after one phone call to AT&T and a store visit to Best Buy.

I've called Apple and visited the Apple store about 10 times only to leave with "You should go home and try this" only to not have it work. I understand about apps and music as such and I can tolerate some lag there but 90% of my post-update performance issues affect the phone. I can't answer calls due to lockups. I can't switch out of a call to look something out and then return to the call. The screen freezes and sometimes the call drops. I call back and get call failed for every outgoing call until I reboot the phone.

So far I have disabled the spotlight search, factory restored to 4.1 then upgraded to 4.2 and then manually restored my contacts, applications and music. None of this helps. My iPhone 3G is garbage mid contract and Apple has taken the "Oh Well you should buy an iPhone 4" stance

From an Apple Certified IT professional and consumer with 3 Mac Computers, 3 iPhones, an Ipod Touch, an iPod video and an Apple TV in his home go ahead color me as insulted.

So what do we as 3G owners have to do? 2 weeks after the iPhone 4 came out Apple agreed to send out free cases to resolve an antenna issue. Is there a snowballs chance that they would even acknowledge and address any of the 3G performance issues? Would they offer any kind of incentive for 3G users to upgrade to a 3GS of the same size and specs so that we could at least feel like the thousands (tens of thousands for me personally) of money that we have spent with Apple are actually appreciated and that future purchases will transpire.

Or is it OK with Apple for a long time Apple fanboy to carry a droid. I'm making one last visit to my local Genius Bar with the new Samsung Captivate this week to explain my situation and let Apple know that they lost me. I doubt I'll see any more concern that I did when I visited back in June, July, August, etc.

H0stile,

It's hard to know what to suggest, especially as you are an Apple certified technician. It sounds almost like a virus, or perhaps faulty processor, or the memory chip. Its got to be worth reinstalling 3.1.3, I would have thought, but the problems you describe sound serious and possibly not OS or firmware issues at all. I'm on 4.2 on 3G and it's very usable so long as I dont have any Safari pages open. I use my 3G extensively, as a palmtop computer more than a phone, and have some heavy duty apps installed. I think your problem has to be hardware related somehow. Good luck with it and let us know if you manage to resolve it.

Thanks for the reply but I think I'll be OK from here. I did visit my local Apple store today one more time and FINALLY I was given a new 3G device. Apparently there was some weird hardware error going on with the other one which made all the iOS 4 issues even worse than some of the ones that the Genius bar normally deals with. It also had some water damage as the moisture indicators were pink (no idea where that came from) but none the less my frustration and frequent visits proved to be justification enough.

No official diagnosis but it appears to be a memory leak since iStat said I had 1 MB of RAM free through most processes. I'll have to restore my backup and if that happens to slow it down then I know that's all on me at this point.

Mad props to Emily at the Northpoint Apple Store in Alpharetta GA for listening to my rant and getting me all squared away. Apple Customer Service always seems to rescue me from the brains out in Cupertino. I'll be sending in a letter about her stellar performance to the main office.
