Wrong. Speculation seems to be that a core Apple service or application (like spotlight or springboard) has a memory leak. Due to the low RAM of the 3G, the problem is exasperated.

The fact that so many people are pleased with the initial performance after a restore or reboot indicated that the hardware is capable, and it's just a software issue that needs to be addressed.

Rebooting due to memory leaks is something I thought I'd left behind when I migrated away from Microsoft... I really wish Apple would get their act together.

Having experienced very badly, *I have just performed two hard resets and the problem seems much improved.*

Anyone who hasn't done this already should: hold down the home and sleep/wake buttons until the swipe to power off appears. Keep holding them down - do not swipe - the phone will reset.

Do this twice.

Yes! I can second that. After following these instructions I found that my 3G was far smoother and more responsive. It's at least as good as my 2nd-gen iPod Touch, which is all I could ask for.

For me:

Double hard reset only resulted in slightly improved performance for about a day before another double hard reset was required.

Turning off Spotlight searches resulted in some sustained performance improvement.

But, neither "fix" brought my 3G anywhere near to the snappyness of OS 3.1.2. Once I downgraded the difference was obvious.

I'm another 3G user who upgraded to iOS 4 and 4.0.1 and have regretted doing so for the last few weeks.
Some of the issues that I've been experiencing are dropped calls, unable to answer incomming calls (can't swipe the answer button!), very, very slow performance using apps, both iOS 4-ready apps, and those that are provided by Apple.
I've done clean installations (not upgrade), set up the phone as "new" in iTunes, used a Mac and PC to do the restore, etc., but still continue to have issues.
The only way that I found to downgrade to 3.1.3 was to use jailbreaking software and doing so. I didn't like that because some apps wouldn't work under the jailbroken phone (Apple Remote), the apps would start up, and shut off.
I upgraded again to 4.0.1 because needed my phone, but will look at downgrading options again.
I want a solution provided by Apple to downgrade to 3.1.3 - not Googling and using third party software to do so. Apple should allow us to downgrade without users needing to do "hacks" on their phones!
The amount of signal bars has also been affected. I get one or two bars indoors, while my wife - still on 3.1.2, gets full bars. I experience dropped calls like never before, she does not.
This is clearly an OS issue! Problems that have risen that were not there before, which can only be attributed to the software upgrade.
Apple, FIX IT! I already submitted feedback, and hope to hear from Apple soon.

though it needs to be repeated when it slows again, as we've found it does suddenly after a few days (seems to vary, anything between two & five) ...

note that it takes literally just a few minutes to do, but it's important to do it all - Spotlight criteria off, normal power-down, power-up again ... and that you can switch all the criteria on again after - no need to suffer !

we get the impression that sync'ing also helps (it's a good idea to do this every few days, anyway, of course) ... and keeping the apps up to date, too, must (logically) help as well, for best compatibility ...

v.difficult to be certain / scientific about any of this, not having the proper tools to measure what's going on !

Lo and behold, angry iPhone 3G users! Apple has released iOS 4.1 Beta 2 to developers and the report is that is COMPLETELY SOLVES the iPhone 3G lag issues!! Hoooray!! In fact, most report that it's faster and more responsive than ever before 🙂

Now we just have to sit by patiently and await for it's public/consumer release.. which, I hope, will happen before I lose it one day and run my 3G over 🙂

I have the same problem unitl I do that :

Clean all the caches (General pref)
Restart the phone (close and open again)
Check off all the Spotlight possibility (General pref)
Restart the phone (close and open again)

Now my IPhone work well (not at the speed of the Iphone 4 but at a good speed.

Attention folks - the distinction is important. When you restore your iPhone 3G or 3Gs reset it as a New Phone. Not just a simple restore.

However, be aware, this will take hours - not minutes and the Apple Tech Note says so. but it is worth it.

Reinstall IOS3. Phone will againn work like it did

Did all that stuff on both the 3G we have ages ago.

If I get a call it sometimes takes ages to accept the call. If after that I send someone an sms it takes ages to open the messaging, a simple awakening of the phone sometimes just stalls. God forbid that I get a phone call while am doing something with the phone, it will just freeze. Most of the games are too heavy to run properly and some just crash. (although in some cases it may be a problem of the developers)

The usability has gone right down. You may clear the cache and then it will brighten up a little bit but afterwards it will unexpectedly start slowing down. Yes the Spotlight thing helps a little, the clearing of the cache helps, removing apps may help, but one wonders why you bought a smartphone to begin with if you have to turn everything off that made it a smartphone.

IOS4 is just too heavy and no amount of tweaking will correct it. I just hope that its not about tactics and making one upgrade to a new phone...MS windows comes to mind, they were good at that

My iPhone 3G took an immediate dive after the recommended upgrade to iOS4. Freezing apps, calls and a list of other frustrations. I contacted the Apple care team and they recommended I take it in to the store and made me an appointment. The phone support was very friendly and helpful giving me hope that they would atleast replace with a like model that would run better. I got to the store and they basically gave me the shrug shoulders saying there is nothing they can do. One course of action was for me to upgrade my 3G phone to a 3GS or iPhone 4. I stated that the phone works fine but the OS needs to be fixed. I was given no hope on a interim or long term solution to this problem.

I use my iPhone 3G almost as my main way of accessing online content & interacting with others.

I followed some of the earlier device and cleared my settings, this provided a temporary reprieve before the ever-present lag and crashes returned.

Anything which uses the onscreen keyboard (replying on websites, twitter apps etc) seems to crash whilst using it. I turned off Auto correction, auto capitalisation and other stuff whch may be using up resources whilst typing and did notice a reduction in the amount of crashes I was experiencing.

Its still lags like a mutha, to the point of being unusable.

Lets be clear, no one expects neverending support from Apple, but whilst they were happy to gain sales from people on 2 year contracts they have a duty to support those customers during that period.

Once the last iPhone 3G has left the shelves and its contract has expired it should be considered a legacy device.

Apple have proved with the iPhone4 they have room to improve when it comes to hardware, and they've proved with practically pushing iOS4 to iPhone 3G owners (with no warnings of reduced performance) they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to software.

These problems have enabled me to clear my head of the hype cloud and I don't think I'd be buying another Apple device. The most disappointing thing is Apple's lack of response, if they said they were cutting some features in 4.10 for 3G users to enhance performance we'd know they were working on it, but as it stands they're completely ignoring the millions of 3G owners... And I'm not going to be handing over money quite so willingly in future to a company that ignores me. I'll leave that to the people who think Apple can do no wrong.

I have a 3G and updated to iOS4.0.1, hoping it would resolve the slowness issue. It didn't. I followed all the advice about closing out Safari, turning off the indexing, etc. I kept 4.0.1 on for a week and couldn't work with the constant slowness so I used the Lifehacker article to downgrade to 3.1.3.

My question: now that 4.0.2 has been released and it includes the PDF exploit fix, how do those of us on 3.1.3 get the security hole fixed without upgrading the OS?
