Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

My warranty ran out on my 3G and with such bad performance I've jailbroken to try and help me understand the issue with comparing against a friends 3GS iPhone which is also jailbroken.

I'm not promoting jailbreaking in anyway before I get any abuse - I have done this to se if there is anything obvious I can do to stop the problem.

What I have found is that even after a complete reboot on the 3G there was only 30MB of memory free and whenever an app is loaded this drops to 8-11MB. Coming out of the app only appears to recover 10MB thus showing there is some sort of memory leak. Given that the 3G has a reported 128MB some 100MB is used for the iOS 4 and phone functionality.
The 3GS however has 256MB ram and after a complete restart had over 100MB free and only dropping to 90MB with multiple apps running.

The problem with the 3G would appear to be the lack of ram and the iOS not efficiently using it.

After playing with an iPhone 4 and seeing the performance improvement (even on a 3GS) I suspect I'll be giving up the 3G and moving forward.

I feel sorry though for those who thought they were getting a good deal when they signed up to a 2 year contract back in May on an 8GB 3G iPhone!!

I've now dug out my old iPhone 2G for comparison and carried out the same jailbreak.

Running on 3.1.3 on the iPhone 2G the free memory available is 38MB when using Safari only (plus whatever the JB stuff is using). On my 3G iOS4.0.1 browsing the same site I'm down to 7MB.

There is a serious memory management issue in iOS4 which needs addressing which is probably happening on all versions of the iPhone but not noticed as they have at least twice the amount if ram.

Hopefully Apple have spotted the memory management issue and are addressing in 4.1

Your second option is to search this forum or the Internet and follow the steps on down grading your phone back to iOS firmware 3.1.3, there a lot of success stories of people who completed the task and are happy once again with their 3G phones.

Ok ... I was miserable with my iPhone for the whole month since the software upgrade..the other day i restored my phone to factory settings like it was a brand new phone and it seems to be working ALOT better. It's not the same but it's worlds better! I also took off alot of my music which is ridiculous that we would have to do but it's sped up so much since then so even though I think this whole thing is absurd until I can afford the new iPhone, this is working a lot better. Try it

After months of 'making do' with a sluggish, unresponsive IOS4-upgraded 3G iPhone, I finally got round to downgrading to 3.13. I may have lost saved text messages and notes (I had backed-up the important stuff) and I'm prepared for certain apps to no longer function but I still feel liberated. My phone is actually usable now and my only regret is that I didn't rollback the OS sooner. The whole operation took less than an hour. If you're umming and ahhing about the procedure, I'd say the benefits far outweigh the pitfalls. Follow the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.

My advice: don't put it off any sooner, downgrade now (how surreal does that sound?) and save yourself the stress and frustration of IOS4. Thank you lifehacker.com.

As a long-time apple user I have to add my view that the quality control appears to be going down the pan. Perhaps the company's just making too many products, and is getting too big too soon to cope but the brand is suffering. I was caught up in the hype of iphone 4 and the latest IOS problems only made me want to upgrade to a new phone even more, especially as my contract has expired. However, my recent experience means I now have no problem resisting the urge to line apple's pockets further until the QA and support improves. Whatever happened to the notion that apple stuff 'just worked'?

Apple tech support acknowledge the problem and they advise that the 3g is just too slow to handle IOS4. So what do we do? Do we have any recourse? Support advise that you cannot go back to 3.x They could not tell me if this issue would be addressed. What a joke to treat loyal Apple customers like this. What do we do? Are they forcing us to upgrade to Iphone 4.0. Do I hear Android knocking on the door?

If you did your restore from your latest backup just recently, I wish you all the best, but I guess your iPhone will not stay fast but start becoming slow again in a few days. That's what I experienced during numerous tries during the last weeks and lots of other people report in these forum here.

Making a new backup and restoring from exactly this new backup will bring you some more fast days and so on. So you will not lose any data, but about two hours every few days for the whole restore procedure.

Glad the restore is working for you. I've done 4 of them and 3 didn't make any difference. Even restoring as a new phone. The last one finally worked because I restored to 3.1.3. Now the phone works fine!

In order for os4.02 to work on an iPhone 3 g you must restore as a new phone.
I am using my iPhone 3G right now to make this post over my wifi connection, and have made all of my posts from my iPhone. If my iPhone could not handle this task don't you think I would be using my intel 2.33 MacBook pro 17 inch instead?????

Here you go.
How to restore a 3g iphone and install os 4.02, follow closely.

step 1- do a hard reset to turn phone off, wait a minute till you do next step.
step 2- turn on your phone.
step 3- open itunes on your computer, do not plug phone in yet.
step 4- after phone is started up and itunes is started up, plug in phone.
step 5- after phone is seen by itunes, verify that you have downloaded os4.02
step 6- if you have not click check for update, download if needed.
step 7- double click the text next to the iphone icon to highlight it.
step 8- rename your iphone to say something like Drews iphone ??//??/???? date
step 9- by renaming your phone you can insure backup, sync and backup phone now
step 10- wait, be patient, dont rush, this takes a while, seems forever.
step 11- make sure your computer does not go to sleep.

step 12- after the sync and backup are complete, verify backup by holding the ctrl key down and right click on the device to pull up drop down menu.

step 13- click restore from backup to verify that your backup with new phone name is in the choices to backup from, do not perform a restore from backup right now.

step 14- now after you have verified that your backup is actually there, click restore, this will erase all data from your phone. this will take a few minutes, now would be a good time for a second cup of coffee.

step 15- after the restore is complete, you now have a iphone 3g with 0s4.02, and no other data on it. Make sure your phone remains plugged in this whole process, do not unplug phone, I cannot stress this enough, and dont rush it.
Now you can hold down the ctrl key and right click on the device in itunes and select restore from backup, select the backup with the new name and with the date you changes, this is the last backup you made, you can rename the iphne later. Let the computer do the restore from backup to lay down all of your contacts, emails, and apps. You will most likely need some usernames and passwords for wifi and such.

step 16- after the restore from backup is complete let the phone connect to the cellular network by itself, do not unplug. after the phone displays " connected to cellular network, you can quit itunes and uplug your phone.
Now your iphone 3g is loaded with a fresh copy of 0s 4.02 and all of your stuff is back the way is was with the previous os.

I did not have the same luck with an "upgrade"
The Iphone 3g must be restored as a new phone with os 4.02 and restored from a good backup to work.

My experience quickly,

Had my iphone 3g loved it. (set up a shrine for my preacious)
Upgraded from 3.1.2 to OS 4.0.1

Iphone=Brick now
Lags horribly, HORRIBLY, drops calls constantly.

Restored phone, still lagging/dropping

Restored phone to factory and did NOT back up, this actually fixed the lagging issue considerably however i still get dropped calls (every single call multiple times).

BUT i write this because its ridiculous. i shouldnt have to delete all my voicemails, music, videos, apps, contacts, backgrounds.
Whats the F&#$ing point of an iphone if i cant have anything on it in order to "run" the OS4? Even then it still drops calls so as far as im concerned now i have a fast brick.

I actually wanted an iphone 4g (going to get a case so antenna isnt issue) however apple ****** me off that they released an OS this horrible without testing it.

If there is a comparable phone when my upgrade comes up i will probably go with that instead im tired of having an iphone that doesnt do apps doesnt work right and cant even function as a phone.
