Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

I am using my iPhone 3G right now to make this post over my wifi connection, and have made all of my posts from my iPhone. If my iPhone could not handle this task don't you think I would be using my intel 2.33 MacBook pro 17 inch instead?????

I updated my phone just a few weeks ago and immediately saw problems with function. It has worsened every day. I had had enough when I tried to answer my phone on Friday and it crashed. I went to the Apple Store hoping they would resolve the issue by giving me a new phone but I was told to wait for an update, even after telling the kid there that my phone was completely unreliable. I wasn't surprised.

This morning I decided to follow the post in lifehacker and downgrade my phone back to 3.1.3. The process was easy and worked like a charm. A few things though. I did loose several contacts and all my pictures because my last saved updated that wasn't a 4.0.1 was from June of 2009.

I'm just glad to have my phone back and in working order and I'm ready to pass it on to my husband. He can sit around and wait for the next update!

Ive had the 3g since last May. After the ios4 update the phone started acting up. Mainly the texting was horrible and there was a slight pause in anything i opened. Sometimes in safari it would freeze for more than 10sec but it works. I had over 400 pics on my phone so i burned most of them and got rid of them on my phone then i unchecked everything in spotlight search and did 2 hardboots. Long behold my 3g is running great finally not pausing while texting and safari runs alot smoother. This will have to do until the 4.1update hopefully apple can fix it permanently.

The 4.1 update has been posted. It took about 15 minutes to download and install. So far, it seems to have brought a little life back to my 3G. Though it was not as slow as others I am seeing minimal delays in texting, emails and apps. Time will tell.

Updated my 3G this morning; had been using 4.0x for weeks now. After initial upgrade to 4.0x my iPhone was worthless. Then did a restore of 4.0x as suggested by others. I think others were correct that not all libraries updated with initial 4.0x upgrade and restoring forced all libraries to update becuase my 4.0x worked slightly better.

So far 4.1 seems good.

The problems I had with 4.0x included trying to launch an App and then having crash. Or clicking on camera and it taking long time to start. Have not seen this issue yet with 4.1 but I am wondering there really was fix for us low RAM 3G'ers or if I am seeign better performance due to freseh install. Will post back if I see any deterioration.

My Wife and Son's 3G's have been pretty poor since upgrading to 4.02, I have applied 4.1 to my Wifes phone and it does seem to have improved performance. My wife is pretty tolerant of technology but when she whines about it going slow you know its bad..

Alas the upgrade on my son's failed and I'm in the middle of restoring it now 😟 but it should be 4.1 at the end of it in a hour or so once its all restored!.

I have to agree with your comments, it's not fantastic but its a bucket load better.

Now that I've had 4.1 on my phone for a week I can say it's better than 4.01/02, but not as spunky as 3.1.3. I still get instances of "stickiness" here and there. From using FreeMemory I think there's something going on memory-wise that is not releasing memory or somehow taking unused memory. If I only have Mail and Phone as running processes I can open FreeMemory and see that I have 3 megs of unused memory. Huh? As the program works and clears the unused, it can jump up to 45 megs or so. Then a little later if I feel "stickiness" I can go back to FreeMemory and it's down to 9-12megs. Doing this experiment in 3.1.3 didn't get such fluctuation. I've turned off everything unneeded and don't use folders.

Since my 3G was not one of the worst cases with 4.0 and was somewhat usable, I figure this update has made my phone about 10% better than with 4.0. Overall it's about 85% of how it was with 3.1.3.

iOS 4.1 did help for me, tho I think the slowness others might be having could be the amount of free ram

have people check for updates to the apps they have?

I have most of the storage space free on mine

What I meant to say is that normally who post in this thread do have problems and those who have solved don't. I've kept on eye on this thread to keep track of what was going on.

I did the jump to 4.1 due to the fact that 4.0.1 was too slow and buggy, and - as many others - I had all my issues fixed. The advantages (folders and Mail) overwhelm the little slowness you've between 3.1.3 and 4.1.

What I did is not a simple update, but a complete reinstall 4.1 from scratch. I did it and it worked.

If you look back on this thread many people return to report what has not worked for them AND to report what HAS worked. Look at yourself - you are an example of exactly this!

Many people have tried 4.1 and come back to report that it did NOT work.
Many people have tried 3.1.3 and NOT ONE has come back to report that it did NOT work.

I cannot understand why you recommend 4.1 - which is uncertain to cure the problems - over 3.1.3 which is certain to

I got it a bit faster now. I moved all photos off my iPhone 3g to my desktop (using image capture on my Mac, and set to delete after transfer (it moves it to a folder I made on the desktop and then). After that reboot the iPhone. Now it is much faster


So I wonder if part of the photo database got damaged a little or something with the photos was slowing it down (took off 203 photos (100.3mb))

After Updating to 4.2.1 I compared my iPod touch 1st Gen 3.1.3. with my iPhone 3G

They are nearly the same speed the iPod being a little faster.

So all is ok now if you make a fresh instllation of 4.2.1 and resync after that.
Don´t use a backup but make one.

Problem solved.

As someone wrote before:

First a make a backup then restore (after this, itunes ask if i want to restore from backup).

Now my wife's 3g work as usual.

Couldn't wait it out any longer. I reverted back to 3.1.3 using these instructions.
