Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

On a whim, I tried the "reset all settings" trick and it seems to have sped up my iphone 3g with iOS4. Yes, I waited a couple of days and monitored things before I posted this. Yes, I tried the double reboot with no considerable improvement. For me the reset all settings trick seems to have helped.

The double reboot (hard reset) appears to work as a temporary solution. No idea if the problem will creep back. I am impressed that I can use the phone now (3G with iOS4) as the last few days it was only good for 1 SMS before the built in apps would start to crash.

Let's hope this fix works for a day or so. I can live with a predictable process until something more long term comes out.

I am not one who thinks Apple fails to care. They have their way of dealing with things. I still find them much more responsive than the alternative vendors.

Upgraded to OS4 a few weeks ago, been happy with the phone for two years and it becomes part of your life. Unfortunately it now runs like a 'DOG WITH NO LEGS' which is a real pain. Tried everything, restored, reset, deleted many apps I suspected may be unfriendly to OS4 but it's all no good. I only have 5 gig of 16 gig used so its not a memory issue just OS4.

Brings back memories of the Apple System 7 launch a few years back! Been a Apple fan for years but going to look at an Android now I'm out of contract. Was waiting for iPhone 4 but the problems several of my friends have has put me off (screen sensitivity bug causing hangups + redials )

I never post on forums but if my message stops 1 person from doing this upgrade then it is worth it..... is Apple going to be as hated as Microsoft was? It is easy to loose customer loyalty!

I had the same performance issues with the iPhone 3G after upgrade to iOS 4.
I seem to have found a SOLUTION, at least a workaround:

Settings > Notifications > Facebook: set all to off

My iPhone is definitely much more reactive now. Please try if this works for you and post your feedback here. Maybe the Facebook app is the main culprit after all?

we find the double reboot (*) works OK ... need to do it once a week, or so, depending on usage ...

odd that while this thread is v.long, the big majority don't seem to have / notice the problem, and that magazines & 'papers don't mention it ... and no comment from Apple, either (**) ... maybe we are in a parallel universe ??

(*) double reboot = press power button and home button at the same time, hold until 'phone reboots (ignore the power-off prompt slide bar, keep holding) ... let 'phone start-up normally (Apple logo) ... when it's all done & ready for action, immediately do it again - ie: repeat this process (important, don't be tempted to do anything in-between) ...

(**) Apple's called a press-conference for Friday - about iPhone4 / iOS4 IIUC

I found the old image file that is needed in my Trash. It was moved there by the iOS installer. Yours might still be there. If not, it should be in your Time Machine backup.

Similarly, you should find your old V3-formatted backup files (containing all of your content, settings, preferences) in your Time Machine backup at ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backups

FWIW, our recommendation would be to stay with 3.1.3 ... and go for 4.0.1 only if (like us) you blindly trusted Apple & updated to iOS4 & got stung / suffered the consequences - in such case, 4.0.1 will give some relief, 'though not enough to overcome the regret ...

Ours, on 4.0.1 now, is a mixed bag - soon after update from iOS4 it seemed much better ('though still regretted updating from 3.1.3) .. last evening it was terrible, this morning it's better again. One or two reasons for this - last evening we were (it's now clear) using a number of apps for the first time since update (camera, a couple of calculators, and some dictionaries), and we had Airplane Mode off in a v.marginal signal area (bars fading to No Service & back again, on a ten-minutes cycle, sort-of) ... this morning, in the same room / area, we've Airplane Mode On & those same apps are faster ... and when we put airplane Mode Off again, responsiveness declines ... seems to suggest memory & memory management issues (?), but who knows ! 'ours are 8Gb 'phones, 'wonder if 16Gb are noticeably better ??

just spoke to someone from apple and he sort of said iOS4.0.1 should fix the slowdown issues currently affecting my 3g iphone (unjailbroken)
he then said if i was still experiencing problems would i make a record of them and get back to him

Yes, there have a been a few reports that folders might slow things down. I have a feeling (guess) that the folders themselves do not slow things down, but that removing them refreshes something. You could try adding the folders back, and see if the performance slows down again. My guess is that it will not. I have plenty of folders myself and consider the current performance acceptable.

In my case, I noticed performance improvements after updating to 4.0.1.

I had also after the update to 4.0 but before the update to 4.0.1, restored to factory settings and set it up as a new phone. I hesitate to recommend that solution, as one loses all data, and it may not actually be what actually fixed it. It would be great if Apple could come with some official advice here.

i tried removing the ibooks app and it seems to have made my phone operate faster and i have even now resorted to disabling the 3G function as well and it seems to be getting better reception and is sligtly quicker opening apps mail etc

what a joke,buy a 3G phone and cannot use it as a 3G........losing me as a Apple devotee everyday

I was having the same issues as everyone else here. I was ready to can my phone and go with another phone/company because every email wasn't being addressed and I kept getting the run around from support staff when I called. I have to say though, it appears to be fixed with the most recent update. Thanks Apple for listening to your customers.

just adding to the thread. my 3G is doing better after doing a full restore and a hard reset, but I suppose it's only temporary.

When it slows down again I'll try the downgrade instructions, although working in the terminal scares this decidedly non computer-savvy user.

When oh when will I learn to check the forums before downloading new updates???

Same here. Ever since 4.0 the 3G is terribly slow to use. I've tried many of the fixes and most of them only work temporarily.

What appears to help for a few hours:
-Hard reset the phone
-make sure safari only has a blank window open (pretty annoying to do everytime you stop browsing

I also did a lot of other stuff but it's hard to say if there is any impact or not. I stopped using the 4.0 folder option. I limited emails to max 25 for pop and a week for exchange.

Calendar is worst. It just shows an empty screen for 5-10 seconds, every time I open it! I read somewhere that Calendar is now checking for birthdays in contacts, but if that is true does it really have to do that every time?

turn off location services, it worked for me ...

does that mean, I wonder, that one or more apps is a cause of the slow-down- using Location Services in some way, since update to iOS4, that it wasn't before ?
