Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

When iOS4 was released I was sucked into "upgrading".

My 3G slowed right down to the point where I stopped using it for anything other then a phone. On top of this the BT implementation rendered the contact transfer to my in-car kit useless.

I lived with iOS4 for a few days, then after the frustration of using a useless slow device became to much I rolled back to 3.1.3 using RecBoot. My 3G is now back to the device I knew and loved before iOS4. On reflection I should never have upgraded!

It's too bad Apple has still not responded. Instead all we're left with is trying all these suggestions that really don't work. While your phone may seem fast at first, performance will degrade with use again unless you reboot your phone every day.

The real problem is that the 3G iPhones have too little RAM. The new OS needs more memory which is a struggle for the 3G phones, so, it doesn't matter how many apps you delete or how many re-installs or restores you try, it's not really going to make a significant difference, despite some people telling you otherwise.

It's time for Apple to fix this for 3G owners and stop ignoring the many problems reported. It's been over a month since this OS was released, surely a fix could have been devised by now. I'm getting the sinking feeling that Apple has no plans to fix this and will instead choose to simply ignore it.

'not sure I understand - clearly doing this might help, at least a little, but in iOS3.1.3 we had nine Spotlight options ticked, and now with iOS4.0.1 we have ten, just one more ... and, if iOS3 could cope, why not iOS4 ??

My guess is that Spotlight can work fine in iOS4, but deactivating it may free some corrupted cache. It is possible that activating it again will keep the speed improvement for some users, if the cache is rebuilt. Spotlight is on with my phone, and I consider the speed acceptable.

It is also possible that the OS itself takes more memory in iOS4. There was enough RAM to handle Spotlight in iOS3, but with iOS4 there is no room for that same action. Deactivating some other memory consuming function, like international keyboards, could achieve a similar result.

Upgraded wife's 3g phone from 3.1.2 to 4.0.1. Phone ran slow. It ran like it was Vista on an old XP machine. My wife started to blame me for ruining her phone. I have now rolled it back to 3.1.3 thanks to the help of the jailbreak community. She likes her phone again, and told me not to "upgrade" it anymore....

My 3G was only a little bit slower after the upgrade to begin with (figured it was just the breaks for having a 2 year old device with a new OS), but hard booting it (pushing the sleep wake and home until the phone shuts off and reboots) has sped mine up a bit. A few apps still take an extra second or two to open, but the phone works great otherwise. Non-issue for me.

Hope it helps a little, turning off the Spotlight Searches, it also says Apple finally admits that it is a crappy OS for the 3G. Now just wait for iOS4.2 , where they say they will fix it. About time!

- deselecting what I did not need as suggested above - made it a little better for me also. The only thing I left checked was Contacts, Notes, and Mail. Need a fix from Apple to make it all usable though!

I have downgraded to iPhone 3.1.3 after 4.0 made my phone almost unusable: extremely slow, keystrokes lagging, very very painful. The downgrade was quite easy and now my phone functions just fine (with the exception of those apps. that require 4.0).
This needs to be fixed.

Downgraded to 3.1.3 after 4.0 ruined my iphone 3g! I'm back now baby but I am done with Apple products from this point forward. How they could not acknowledge this problem is beyond me. Everything that I use to love about Apple has slowly disappeared as they have gotten bigger. I hope my 3g lasts for a long time but if not Droid hear I come!

I'm in the same boat-- iPhone 3G became slow to the point of being virtually unusable after accepting iOS 4 update. I did a factory restore, which helped, but only temporarily before my phone than lost its responsiveness again. I now have to do double hard resets on a regular basis (up to 2-3x/week) in order to get it to speed up again. It hangs when I try to unlock it, when an application is bringing up the keyboard to enter text into a field. The double hard resets seem to help for a while. This has been very disappointing.

I have gone back to v 3.1.3 and it is such a relief. My phone would not go onto my Wifi - saying the code was incorrect (it wasn't). This just happened today for some reason - so I have had enough of OS 4.01.

If you are having trouble downgrade as I did.

Someone said the iPhone4's interface is like hot butter, my iPhone3G's after 4.0 update is like cold peanut butter!

- Very slow to reboot
- Home button doesn't always respond to the first click.
- Opening albums, interface is just a screenshot of last state, take 2-3 seconds to refresh and become touchable.
- Camera opening time.....(long after the moment is gone)
- Calendar also takes 3-4 seconds to become touchable after opening.
- When opening safari, bookmarks always popup first as home screen.
- Maps is now only accurate to 300 meters.
- Apps crashing regularly...YES
- Phone crashing on answering incoming call...YES
- Apps failing to even open...YES
- Skype...Unusable
- iPod 3-4 seconds to open with NO music in it.
- Keyboard touches registering sometimes after ten inputs.
- Safari, awful to use, slow to render webpages, zoom lag, pinching mistaken as other commands.

I greatly regret upgrading to OS4 to the extent that I don't want another iPhone particularly when I feel forced into having to upgrade because my existing iPhone has been made unusable by an official update from Apple

quite agree- we've found the cure (*) works, but has to be applied again every now & then (first time was three days later, in our case), because of a sudden relapse ...

can't believe how Apple is handling this - very poorly, and in such contrast to how it nearly always does things !

at a family gathering over the weekend, we were asked what we'd recommend for someone's first computer - for video conferencing & e-mails, and surfing, and ... hmm, difficult one to answer !

iPhone OS 3.0 since slower, has already been renewed, but without success.

With iOS 4.0 no longer be used as a phone! The wiping and dragging the screen or in the
Settings, calendar, contacts jerk such inputs need seconds, an absurdity!

Also tips on how to "speak to disable" only brings in a 3.1.3 -> 1a <- improvement.

If controls do not respond and it takes several seconds, it reminds me of our old old
Mobile phones which belonged to it. But on an iPhone is the be!

The problems are the same as for the restoration of connection with a MobileMe account network. After Tips it's the search function which will only be fed. Is actually understandable, but also
stutters after a few days and a few iPhone App's the only way before them. The best way you can see it when the Screen wipe is not running smoothly but jerks.

Had my 3G back from iOS 4.01 to 3.1.3.

A tip to 3.1.3 is yes and it works okay (yet), but the developers are encouraged App's only
to develop under iOS 4th Everything else you can imagine, yes.

unser 3G ist schon ab der OS 3.0 langsamer geworden, iPhone wurde damals erneuert, aber ohne Erfolg.

Mit iOS 4.0 nicht mehr als Handy zu gebrauchen! Das Wischen und Ziehen des Bildschirm oder in den
Einstellungen, Kalender, Kontakte ruckeln derart, Eingaben brauchen Sekunden, ein Unding!

Auch Tipps wie die "Suchergebnisse" zu deaktivieren bringt nur in der 3.1.3 eine --> 1a <--Verbesserung.

Wenn Bedienelemente nicht reagieren und es mehrere Sekunden dauert, das erinnert mich an unsere alten früheren Handys bei denen das dazugehörte. Aber auf einem iPhone soll das nicht sein!

Die Probleme sind gleich nach der Wiederherstellung da mit Verbindung eines MobileMe Konto über Netzwerk. Nach Tipps liegt es an der Suchfunktion die erst gefüttert werden muss. Ist eigentlich nachvollziehbar, aber auch nach ein paar Tagen und ein paar App's stottert das iPhone nur so vor sich her. Am besten sieht man es wenn der Bildschirm mit wischen nicht flüssig läuft sondern ruckelt.

Musste mit meinem 3G wieder zurück von iOS 4.01 auf 3.1.3.

Ein Tipp auf 3.1.3 ist ja okay und funktioniert (noch), aber die Entwickler sind angehalten App's nur noch unter iOS 4 zu entwickeln. Alles weitere kann man sich ja denken.
