Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

my 3G is slow too, the slide to answer function when a call comes in is so laggy I don't know if i've answered the phone or not and have had several occasions where the phone was so overwhelmed it just gave up and goes back to the home screen. did a factory reset (PITA, shouldn't have to do that) and it's still slow and clumsy. This is not a new problem, old hardware running new software will always be slow, please give us an easy way to downgrade to the old OS

I just spoke with Apple support...they have been getting a tonne of complaints, but as of now are not offering, or developing a solution to this problem.

They suggested I reset the phone and all of it's data, or I could downgrade (but they do not recommend or support that option).

I pleaded that they pass my comments up the ladder that Apple fix their mistake. She suggested I could speak with her supervisor but I didn't have the time. Anyone who does, I suggest you give apple a ring and directly climb to the top.

Im having the same issue.
1) Battery drains, even when I'm on airplane mode and location services are off.
2) lock screen is slower then swiping the lock slide to the right. its jumpy
3) SMS app is slower especially when sending a message, the text-bubble doesn't smoothly animate to go to the sms thread. it just jumps to there with no transition. (its probably because of the new spell checker which uses additional RAM)
4) the Settings page is really sluggish. doesn't respond right away on clicks and swipe (down/up).
5) opening an app (Photos for example) makes it look like its loading faster because you see the albums right away.. but actually it only shows the after-image when you last access it while its still loading Photos in the background. They use the after-image technique just to make it appear that its loading faster.
8) the Notepad icon looks crumpled just below the brown bar.
9) iBooks is sooo slow... turning pages doesn't respond sometimes.
10)my apps are now really slow.
11) normally, when i press the sleep button, ill hear a clicking sound with the push. but now, the clicking sound is really delayed. same thing when slide-unlocking the device.
12) iPod sound seems lower now... i have a fixed volume setting in my car and i know how loud it sounds coz i listen to it every single day with my iphone... but now the sound seems lower with the same exact volume setting in my car and in the iPhone volume. equalizer setting in car and iPhone are exactly the same too...
I just wish there's an option to disable features you dont need which may be eating memory resource like landscape keyboard, spotlight search, the new spellcheck, etc). i think when those are disabled, it would make iPhone 3G back to being smooth and fluid like in the old iOS 2.0 days...

YES. I certainly have had the veil of APPLELOVE lifted from my gullible face. I have been lifelong Apple fan, defending the brand in every way, with anyone, including my pocketbook for years. It took 3 trips to the genius bar and 2 calls to applecare to get my 3G swapped for another after I suffocated my phone by upgrading to 4.0.1. I received a replacement 3G os 4.0 which was an improvement, however after a week, this replacement phone is bogging down. YestProxy-Connection: keep-alive

day I unchecked spotlight form all aps, and that seems to help.
I am disappointed that apple engineers and management approved this release for the 3G generation, abandoning us as they work on the latest hardware solutions.

Unfortunately for some iPhone 3G users the iOS 4 update did not go very well. Reports have surfaced that the new firmware has problems running on the older hardware. The good news is that Apple is working on iOS 4.1, which will alleviate many of the problems with iPhone 3G compatibility.

In the meantime, upgraders have experienced premature battery drain and excessive heat coming from their devices. Performance has slowed to a crawl for some users as speed issues dominate, with many unable to run simple tasks without a headache.

There is one temporary fix for iPhone 3G iOS 4 issues which involves changing a few settings, but results are mixed. Early testing of iOS 4.1 indicates Apple is indeed working on the problem and the incredible slowdowns have been improved.

Apple previously stated that some features of the new operating system would not be available on older hardware, such as the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The specs of the newer iPhones are definitely much better than the iPhone 3G, but this doesn't excuse Apple from doing its part to make sure that iOS 4 is fully compatible. After all, Apple refused to even offer the iOS 4 upgrade to original iPhone users. They knew the experience wouldn't be pleasant.

Apple is currently investigating the problems with iOS 4 running on the iPhone 4, as developers test the beta versions of iOS 4.1 No word yet on a release date for the new firmware.

The problem is the consumer wasn't offered a choice and the fix isn't as easy as a reboot or restore. The main problem is Apple pushed an update indiscriminately when it should have been limited to only iPhone 4 customers.

It is clear that the hardware platform of the 3g and 3gs cannot run the iPhone OS4.0.x. It is a memory allocation issue.

1. Apple should have tested this long prior to release
2. Set the push from iTunes to only push to iPhone 4.0 or at least have iTunes archive the 3.x OS for and give the CONSUMERS a CHOICE to go back.

They didn't do either 1 or 2 - now a LOT of users have serious issues with the 3g /3gs iPhones. I had to use Lifehacker to roll mine back to 3.x however, I lost all my contacts because iTunes wouldn't let me restore unless I upgraded back to 4.x

This is a huge problem for companies and consumers.

Apple made a huge blunder when it first dismissed the antenna problem. They made no effort to acknowledge it or even fix it. Bumpers? Free Case? First it was:
1. Don't hold it that way
2. It's a software bug
3. Here have a free bumper

Then to compound the issue, they pushed an update which killed the only iPhones they had on the market that worked without issues.

This is a huge blunder for Apple, and on the verge of fierce competition, Apple's response has been the WRONG response.

They should release two versions of the OS - one for 3g and 3gS and another version for iPHone 4 users, INCLUDING the security fixes.

6.9 gb capcity and 5.8 gb free (iOS 4.0.2 (8A400) ) What build do other people have?

I am also seeing issues with the ram, the other day the iPhone crashed (it rebooted on its own) while using the Apple Store app, just looking at the Apple rechargeable batteries, was looking thru the images, went it hung for about 15 seconds then it rebooted (I think the crash report was sent last time It sync in iTunes

iStat tells me that phone has been on for 3 days 14 hours and 37 minutes

Well here is my day one report:
A full restore as a new phone and restoration
Of my backup seems to have worked. I now have reliable wifi and the phone responds when I touch the touch screen. Before the restore the phone was basically a $399 paperweight, now the phone works well. The wifi seems faster and pages load superfast. By making the necessary changes to the network settings, my wifi works great
. So far the phone is working fine

1st of all, Apple DO read these forums as I have had emails from them complaining that I should not be telling people to downgrade their iPhone 3g's to 3.1.3 (they say it comes under jailbreaking, though when you do it, your phone is NOT jailbroken)& removing my posts mentioning this.
They just dont care if the customer is unhappy & the usual apple customer support is to ignore the customer & hope they go away or buy a new version of the broken/faulty product.
I have NEVER had any response form apple for any of the issues I have had with my iPhone (problems with headphone jack socket to iOS4 fiasco)
even when you give them feedback, they state after you send it they will NOT reply to you!

if your unhappy with your iphone since iOS4 downgrade (just google downgrade iphone to 3.1.3) & downgrade.

&/or do the only thing every company can understand DO NOT BUY AN APPLE PRODUCT AGAIN.
I have bought 1 apple product & been generally happy with it (Itunes is awful to use & apple quality control seems to be poor) but I will not buy one again, there overpriced & there is better products at a less price on the market now.

seems a lot of people have lost confidence in apples quality control & customer service & apple are not interested in addressing this.

i had a 3g with os4 on it and yes it was slow so i emailed apple and complained about it shortly after i recived 2 calls from my local store to try to help me sort it out and when they failed they replaced my handset for a new one running 3.1

THE IPHONE 3G IS THE BEST PHONE THEY HAVE EVER MANUFACTURED. OS 4.02 WORKS PERFECTLY ON AN IPHONE 3G. And secondly to the poster who wants to see video, send me a link or a place I can post it, so I will stop getting ridiculous posts from you.

I finally had enough this week and took the plunge to revert back to 3.1.3. I now have my iPhone back! I do miss the folders, but it's a small sacrifice so that I can have a phone that doesn't take 10 secs to create an SMS.

If it's OK with highdef I would like to add my twopenneth to your very useful posting.

In my opinion I would insert the following items prior to the process.

a) Delete any Apps you just don't need or use (you know there are plenty !!).

b) Check iTunes THOROUGHLY for ANY duplicate media ESPECIALLY voice memos - if you find any deal with them BEFORE you do anything else.

c) Locate 'Backup' folder in Library/Application Support/MobileSync and COPY it to your desktop. If you have not attempted to upgrade previously your 3.1.3 backup will be here in case things go wrong and you need to downgrade again. If you have tried to upgrade previously then it may or may not be here.

NB. I also found some significant duplication and corruption with media files in Bento. I have no idea if this is relevant to the upgrade problems but if you have Bento installed it might be worth backing it up to Bento on your computer, uninstalling it from your iPhone, and re-installing/syncing after everything else is done just to play it safe.

Then follow highdef's very well-detailed process to the letter.

I totally agree - the iPhone 3G is DEFINITELY capable of running OS4 - I know this because I had all the major lagging problems and ended up doing much of what highdef has described by luck more than judgement a few weeks back (I documented some ramblings here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12078619#12078619).

The only minor lags I get now were showing with 3.1.3 anyway and I only have 1GB of 16GB free.

I'm as certain as can be that the problem is either with the upgrade process itself or with a data corruption issue that upsets the upgrade process.

Whatever the problem actually is should have been addressed by Apple. The upgrade should have been the same as any other. To have to tinker about with renaming your iPhone and restoring backups etc after your iPhone has been rendered useless by an authorised upgrade is not what we have come to expect from Apple and is alien to what they always seemed to stand for.

Apple's silence on such a serious issue that has affected so many customers is totally unacceptable.

Apple - shame on you… your long, long continued silence is deafening…

...but, our conversations on this board are between each other so our comments are not 'sent' to Apple.

I would still like to know how to extract the 4.0.1 Backup out of the 4.0.1 ipsw file after the "restore back to new". The 4.0.2 upgrade removed all previous Backups but def fixed the lagging issues I've been having.

Hey Folks,

My I phone 3G was terribly slow with OS4. I tried everything mentioned in these forums. Some things fixed it for a little while but it eventually returned to its sluggish ways.

A few days ago I rolled back to 3.1.3. I'm happy again. I do not recommend upgrading to 4 until apple specifically addresses the issues with the 3G phone. In the mean time, I recommend rolling back to 3.1.3.
