Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

3-4 days after the 4.X upgrade my 3G became erratic.. Searched the forums for a quick fix and decided the fix with the least amount of brain damage would be to return the phone to an Apple store for a replacement..

Within minutes of discussing the issues with a genius I had a new 3G with 3.X and I was good to go..

Plugged into itunes, declined the upgrade, reloaded all my data and problem solved..

I went back to 3.1.3 and my phone and I are happily married again. No freezing and slow performance issues anymore.
sure I lost some of the fancy new features and newer app functionality, but oh well...the phone flipping works.

By the way, to set the record straight: one does NOT have to "JB" to downgrade.

Since the 4.0 update, my 3G phone is so slow and borderline unusable. I have been to the Genius bar like 4 times. I did all the restores and backups and even a replacement phone. The software update is not compatible. This is such a shame that apple didn't know this. I wish I could go back to the 3.0 software but apparently that can't happen. This really *****.

I recently (8/26) upgraded from 4.01 to 4.02 and my phone has been running much better. Not stalling on bring up applications, or crashing back to the main menu when I ask it to. On the 4.01 I was having to restart my phone at least once every day and restore the phone about once every week or so. If 4.02 keeps working I will be far more likely when my contract comes up to get another iPhone but we will see.

The fix is on. I am posting this thread to tell everyone
that the fix is on, and apple does not approve.
The fix is out there , I downgraded my piece of crap ios4.02
back to 3.1.3 and apple even tried to twart that fix.
The fix is published on the Internet. Search iPhone 3gdowngrade.
It's out there, and it works, and apple is very unhappy.
The fact is there is not a darn thing they can do about it,
and they don't care.

Tengo un 3G de 16GB actualizado a IOS 4.0.2. No tengo tantos problemas como vosotros, porque yo instalé el IOS 4.0 en mi Iphone, desde el principio, como nuevo dispositivo y no como actualización (la razón fue que siendo usuaria de windows, tengo experiencia en que un sistema operativo no debe ponerse sobre otro. Es mejor hacerlo sobre el dispositivo limpio), quizá por esto, mi Iphone está funcionando algo mejor que el vuestro.

Pero coincido con vosotros en la mayor lentitud (aunque en mi caso el Iphone 3G es operativo y funciona) y tengo también el problema de que se congela a veces y se apaga bruscamente en ocasiones. Tras el IOS.4.0.2 solo me quedan 30 MB de RAM libres, lo que dificulta el uso de algunas aplicaciones compradas en Applestore.

Yo estoy de acuerdo en que el progreso debe continuar y mejorar los Iphones y el software continuamente con nuevas posibilidades (esto es bueno para Apple y para los nuevos usuarios). Me gustan mucho las que aporta 4.0 a mi 3G, Pero Apple debe entender, que el costo del Iphone 3G no debe hacerlo inservible en 2 años, creo que es un dispositivo para durar más tiempo.

Por eso pido a Apple que en la actualización que esperamos, tenga en cuenta que los 3G necesitan poder liberar memoria RAM y que necesitamos que en IOS4 las funciones que sean para el Iphone4 y no sean para el 3G, puedan ser apagadas en la configuración del 3G y no se carguen en la RAM, que es el principal problema que tenemos en la actualización de 3G a 4.0.

Si se pueden liberar de la RAM lo que no se usa o no es compatible, todos ganamos: los usuarios de 3G podemos tener actualizado a IOS4 sin sacrificar la funcionalidad del Iphone y Apple tendrá en nosotros usuarios satisfechos que disfruten de sus Iphones y que en el futuro volvamos a comprar otro Iphone cuando consideremos cambiarlo.

Si no dan soluciones al problema actual, y nos obligan a cambiar ahora de teléfono, es posible que decidamos no confiar en Apple y no compraremos un Iphone4, que en una futura actualización en 1 o 2 años pueda quedar inservible de nuevo.

¡Señores de Apple, Un uso de 2 años es poca vida útil para un teléfono inteligente de la calidad del Iphone!. ¿No les parece?.

I followed the steps from Lifehacker to "downgrade" back to OS 3.1.3. My phone is back to normal! Thanks, Lifehacker! When my AT&T contract is up this December, I plan to switch to an Android phone. I love the iPhone OS, but after this (and my experience with the iPhone 4), I am very wary of Apple products and support.

this is affecting almost all 3G users - I was out last night @ an annual football pool and every 3G user (including myself) in the room are having the same issues. the phone has slowed so much several applications are now useless and everything from sending texts to receiving calls has dramatically slowed.

the ONLY way Apple will respond is if enough media gets involved the stock starts to react negatively so instead of wasting your time on this blog email/call/write your local (preferably national) journalists to start writing on the subject. eventually the business journalists will catch on and that may get Apple's attention...

DennisMichael, you should do your homework so you don't look foolish in a forum. Do yourself a favor and google ios 4.1 Then, wait a few more days until it's available to the public, and then update your phone. This will solve your problems. And in the future, please gather your facts before you reply.

Is anybody here who's reading the NEWS? Would you please be aware that NEXT WEEK the 4.1 update will be released officially and Jobs told to the world that it will contain a FIX for all the 3G issues?

Would you please STOP yelling around? I'm not happy, too, but when I knew that the next week we'll have a fix, I calmed down. So come on!

re-reading this thread just makes me sad. i've downgraded to 3.1.3, and (other than the fact that i can't upgrade my apps and there are a few i can't use 'cause they only work with 4.0) that did seem to solve the problem.

i dunno, maybe this problem isn't as big as we 3g owners think...it doesn't seem to be getting any traction in the press or elsewhere. i hope apple is actually working on a fix.

I have to agree. I did a restore and my 3G is running much better. I do have spotlight search off but that's all. I have never used it anyway. Others have not seen this but at least we have working phones now. Hopefully the iOS 4.1 release will fix the issues and everyone's 3G will be working well again!

I've carried out every single fix mentioned in this enormous thread and all of them have only a temporary benefit.

However, I have found that turning off all Spotlight, auto-correct, auto-capitalisation leads to less lag and crashes when using the keypad.

The only real fix is 4.10 coming this Wednesday, I hope it does sort it because there is no way I can afford the iPhone 4 contracts so will be jumping ship to whatever the best Android phone is when my contract is up in November. If 4.10 does sort it then I can keep my 3g until the iPhone5 is out and I'd be able to afford the iph4 with its price reduction.

I must say, my 3G has improved considerably after I disabled spotlight.
However, it is still half way between the iOS4 nightmare and the joy of 3.1.3.
Many Apps still crash, and the erratic behaviour persists.

Your letter is very specific and well thought out and I'd be interested in reading Apple's response.

That said, I "downgraded" my 3G to 3.1.3 a few weeks ago (there are literally hundreds of pages devoted to restoring 3G's to 3.1.3 on the Interwebs) and my IOS4 nightmare is just a fleeting bad memory today.

There's always the risk of bricking your phone (or so said the author of the protocol I followed) but I couldn't live with it the way it was and would have bought a new phone (not an iPhone, on general principle) if I had to live with it after the upgrade so it seemed like a reasonable thing to try.
