Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

Im having the same issue.
Here are the things I noticed:
1) home screen with icons seems faster when swiping left/right
2) lock screen is slower then swiping the lock slide to the right. its jumpy
3) SMS app is slower especially when sending a message, the text-bubble doesn't smoothly animate to go to the sms thread. it just jumps to there with no transition. (its probably because of the new spell checker which uses additional RAM)
4) the Settings page is really sluggish. doesn't respond right away on clicks and swipe (down/up).
5) opening an app (Photos for example) makes it look like its loading faster because you see the albums right away.. but actually it only shows the after-image when you last access it while its still loading Photos in the background. They use the after-image technique just to make it appear that its loading faster.
6) loading maps has good fade-in transition now unlike before.
7) Camera really improved! i noticed that its less blurry when you're focusing something near. brightness in dark light has improved too.
8) the Notepad icon looks crumpled just below the brown bar.
9) iBooks is sooo slow... turning pages doesn't respond sometimes.
10) Some of my apps are now really slow.
11) normally, when i press the sleep button, ill hear a clicking sound with the push. but now, the clicking sound is really delayed. same thing when slide-unlocking the device.
12) iPod sound seems lower now... i have a fixed volume setting in my car and i know how loud it sounds coz i listen to it every single day with my iphone... but now the sound seems lower with the same exact volume setting in my car and in the iPhone volume. equalizer setting in car and iPhone are exactly the same too...
13) all my songs in my iPhone has lyrics on it (i put them one by one), and now they're gone!!! although the album art are still there...

i can go all day...
i just wish there's an option to disable features you dont need which may be eating memory resource like landscape keyboard, spotlight search, the new spellcheck, etc). i think when those are disabled, it would make iPhone 3G back to being smooth and fluid like in the old iOS 2.0 days...

I am sorry to disappoint you David, but double and even triple hard reset do not solve the problem of slower chip and lack of RAM. Whatever you do, just try using iPod and Safari and feel the difference. Good lck with iOS4 on 3G.

Did an upgrade to iOS4 and phone was slow as a dog. Then did a restore to factory settings. Slight improvement but still - opening the SMS app takes about 5 seconds. The phone is sluggish when trying to answer a phone call. Opening certain apps now takes forever (Airshare, DocsToGo). DocsToGo was always somewhat sluggish, Airshare was not.

I have 6GB free on a 16GB iPhone and I have around 20 apps installed. I tested the phone before installing any additional apps on it - it was already sluggish.

Basically - Apple took a perfectly good phone and turned it into a snail.

I had similar issues to what a lot of you here also did after moving to iOS4. Slooooow response time, calendar practically unusable, sync not working for a while, etc. I almost got to the point of looking at a Droid. I'm convinced Apple will announce another carrier in Verizon by year end, so I'm not about to re-up another two years with an iPhone and AT&T (horrible!) now, but this phone got so ridiculously slow that I was contemplating doing something.

Well, I did. I put OS 3.1.3 back on and life is good again. It made me realize how slow iOS4 actually made my 3G. There weren't any deal breaker features of iOS4 that I really wanted/needed, so I'm OK with it.

Here is what I think. Apple isn't going to release an update for us 3G owners, because they want us to buy their new hardware. Much like how they left their non-Intel Mac users basically forced to buy an Intel Mac if they wanted to use most new software released for the Mac. So I wouldn't hold your breath. I have tried dang near every solution in these forums for my 3G and none of them have done anything to resolve the issue. Coming from a company that tells people that the way they are holding their phone is causing their reception problem and not bad design decisions tells me that there is little hope for a real solution from them. I bet this post gets deleted.

I have the popular AppBox Pro app on my 3G/16. It has a handy "Dashboard" function which displays the status of memory: how much is free, wired, active, and inactive. Right now, there is 11 MB free, but earlier today (when I had 3 Safari pages open), it was down to only 2 MB free (out of 57 MB total).

I'm going to keep an eye on memory usage and see if there is any correlation between sluggish performance and lack of free memory.

did you double re-boot, not single, as per goofy69's recommendation (*) ?

we thought we'd lost our calendars, but they were still on the host laptop & after visiting the Calendars page in Calendar (top-left button) on the iPhone & re-ticking the ones we wanted, we found all was OK again ...

(*) hold power button and home button at the same time until 'phone reboots ... ignore the power-off prompt with slide bar & keep holding ... let 'phone start up normally. then repeat this process again ...

Same issues here as everyone else.
I've reported it to Apple, as should everyone else affected.

Interestingly, the double reboot has worked for me also so far (time will tell if the performance remains ok). I had done this a few days ago, the only difference being that I logged in and checked my texts before doing the 2nd hard reset, that didn't work at all. So it seems a double reset has to be straight after one another... why I do not know.

Obviously this needs to be fixed sharpish by Apple, it does not meet my expectation for their products. I'm disappointed.

I tried retoring etc, did nothing to speed up my Iphone 3G, its true what people say though, the 1st time you open a app or camerea, or setting etc, it takes ages, try it again & its normal speed indicating the OS is frantically killing things not required in memory so a memory issue (not the the total amount but the stuff used to execuse programs) im presuming they use faster seperate memory for this or reserve x amount) Ive tried multiple hard resets, as well as removing most of me text messages & photos, all seems to make none or very little difference, it seems better memory resource managment needed to be implemented when designing the firmware. from apples lack of any kind of acknowledgement of the problem (like usual) i think we can expect little or no help (its took them 3 years to work out how to fix the iphones 3G problems, without admiting it was a problem till they had a fix (expected in a few weeks)

Could you confirm that you used the MacLife prescription on a 3G? The article indicates that they only tested the procedure on a 3GS.

Ive restored my iphone 3G & tried the double hard reset, neither helps.(+ the restore you loose your ringtones & everything but phone numbers in contacts)
im convinced its memory managment by the firmware, so no matter what you do, untill they fix this in a update, were stuck with sluggish phones, im sure apple would recommend purchasing a new iphone maybe......

I have just ended a phone call with O2 (UK) after speaking with one of their techie guys about the os4 problems on 3G. They (O2) acknowledge that there are problems with the new os4 that Apple are doing very little about (if anything) and suggest to those who have the abilities too to downgrade the software back to the 3.1 by the "unofficial" methods. They also stated that Apple will not inform customers on how to do this downgrade because, and I quote "Apple want customers to switch and stay with the new software".

What Apple want and what they get are two differant things.
