Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Irons you can try this "magical" process to get to 3.1.3 again, just takes a few steps to follow closely but yes you can.

For both PC and MAC:
http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g%5Bs%5D-from-ios-4- to-ios-313

I just downgraded my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and it works just as before. Familiar icons, speed is back. Just pay attention to all the steps as there are unique files for 3G versus the 3GS model, each of which are listed there.

I don't want to believe all the trash talk about the Apple mob coercing us into upgrading by "crippling" our phones. Surely this can't be a difficult problem to solve - just let us roll back to the old version until a technical fix is found or we choose to upgrade at our own pace?

Apple please help!

Apple doesn't follow these forums. Please send your response to them as formal feedback. If the 50,000+ people who have viewed this thread had reported the problems they are having, it would be clear to Apple that there is a growing tsunami of customer dissatisfaction heaading their way.

I'm having the same problems and I agree, I hope that Apple are listening to us. I have discovered a way to improve it slightly - it is only a bit, but better. Press and hold the home key and the on/off button at the same time, hold it until you see the 'Apple' on your screen - this re-boots the Iphone and makes it a bit quicker, but no way as fast as it was before the upgrade. If you can be arsed, you could back all your stuff up - hit restore and then put everything back on, this has worked in the past - but can you really be arsed to do it. Post how you get on yeah?

I had the same performance issues with the iPhone 3G after upgrade to iOS 4.
I seem to have found a SOLUTION, at least a workaround:

Settings > Notifications > Facebook: set all to off

I tried this and I think the phone is more responsive. I say "I think" because mine wasn't anyway as bad as others apparently are (Messages is the slower app and it takes exactly 7 seconds to load, everything else is quite responsive. I never experienced delays in ringing, but I have experienced delays in text input — but these tend to come and go). I suppose settings, number and type of apps installed etc. must have some influence on performance.
I think that if we took sometime confronting our settings, installed applications, etc. we might come to a conclusion of what is slowing the phones down.
The truth is this thread is very active, and being such a problem for us all it surely looks that EVERY 3G OWNER is experiencing this. But IS THIS SO? There are around 300 people here. The others (there are quite a few...) can't find their way to this forum or they simply don't have any problem? Do we know of 3G owners who don't? That might be useful also.

For now, I think I'll try this: to uninstall every non-system app, and afterwards slowly put everything back in.

Ours, on 4.0.1 now, is a mixed bag - soon after update from iOS4 it seemed much better ('though still regretted updating from 3.1.3) .. last evening it was terrible, this morning it's better again. One or two reasons for this - last evening we were (it's now clear) using a number of apps for the first time since update (camera, a couple of calculators, and some dictionaries), and we had Airplane Mode off in a v.marginal signal area (bars fading to No Service & back again, on a ten-minutes cycle, sort-of) ... this morning, in the same room / area, we've Airplane Mode On & those same apps are faster ... and when we put airplane Mode Off again, responsiveness declines ... seems to suggest memory & memory management issues (?), but who knows ! 'ours are 8Gb 'phones, 'wonder if 16Gb are noticeably better ??

During the dreaded days of pre-4.0.1, I played a lot with airplane mode, but saw no speed difference in my 8G phone. Could it be the location services? But I doubt you have calculators or dictionaries with location services.

I noticed this same thing. I posted it several days ago, but received no response. I even started a separated thread suggesting that the "folders" might be at least part of the problem, but my thread was deleted by Apple. For me, and the friends that I know who have 3G phones, eliminating all of the folders has solved the problem.

@Lincoln,
Thanks for the tip about deleting folders. It is a great suggestion (deleting all the folders on iOS to improve performance of the 3G). I tried it, but it did not seem to make much difference. My installation of iOSlow is still slow. However, I only had one folder (containing 3 items), so perhaps the overhead in creating/managing the folder on my iPhone was not as significant as on your 3G.

Thanks for the idea.

Obviously no one from Apple is either reading these posts or reading but not responding. The frustration with the slow performance after downloading the IOS4.0 is massive (look at the number of posts), however still no action taken nor advice given by Apple.

Steve Jobs believes in numbers and "hard data". This was made clear at last week's Antennagate press conference. Here are some constructive suggestions to ensure that accurate hard data is available for responsible decision making.

Send feedback, and lots of it, direct to Apple:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Call AppleCare and let them know your iPhone 3G is malfunctioning as a result of iOSlow.

Write the press (MacWorld, TUAW, Mossberg, Gruber, Laporte, Breen, Ihnatko, Consumer Reports...)

You can even write directly to Mr. Jobs if you feel his organization is overlooking this serious 3G issue and sullying Apple's brand reputation. Give him hard data (# of seconds to open an app, # of calls missed, # of hours spent troubleshooting, etc).

What I find most surprising, is that Apple apparently knew all along that this 4.x upgrade would not work well on the 3G phones, but elected to encourage 3G users to take the upgrade anyway.

I found this article published May 24, 2010 , which was weeks BEFORE the 4.0 upgrade was released to us. Give it a read : http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-probably-killing-the-iphone-3g-2010-5

'not sure what these terms mean, but when we double reboot & then run Memory Sweep on our 3G / iOS4.0.1 'phone, we get something like this :

Free 16MB / Inactive 16MB / Active 24MB / Wired 27MB

as against before the reboot, and say a day after the previous reboot, when the Free will have fallen to less than 2MB ...

the exact numbers vary by the second, so the Free 16MB will vary between about 10Mb & maybe 18MB, as we watch ...

and after reading a few e-mails (Mail) and using a few other apps, the Free 16MB will have fallen below 10MB, and then decline slowly to 4MB (+/- 1MB) as we watch ...

Memory Sweep includes buttons for freeing-up memory, but double-reboot seems to give a longer-lasting effect !

First off, Apple likes to put their head in the sand and respond to all problems with, "We are not aware of any users having those issues". I experienced those with my original Mac back in '94, then the faulty hinges on my G3 Powerbook which I literally through out in the garbage and now iOS4.

I did speak to a Apple Rep about the sluggish performance and he emailed a link to trash itunes. The procedure was to reboot phone, restore as new and if problems persist trash itunes and reinstall. I did the first two but was blown away by having to reconfigure all my apps, enter passwords and losing all text messages and pictures. Imagine doing that plus the itunes reinstall.

Dear Mr. Apple,
Please consult Mr. Microsoft on how to kill business and your the price of your APPL stock. Oops, it looks like you already figured that out.

Thank you,
disgruntled longtime customer.

Here's something to fan the flames a little more….

I was on the line to the O2 Business customer care about my tariff. At the end of this unrelated conversation, the lady asked in her lovely Leeds tones - "Is there anything else I can help you with?"

I saw an opportunity to ask if she new anything about the iOS4/3G incompatibility. She put me through to technical. He started with the usual jumping through hoops routine and I politely stopped him in his tracks. "I've done all that, been on the message boards, etc, etc"

He asked me to hold the line while he spoke to Apple support. After 5 minutes on hold listening to Soft Indie Anthems III, O2 Technical man came back on the line with this:

"I've spoken to Apple and they have said that iOS4 doesn't work with the iPhone 3G (note: 'doesn't work', not 'doesn't work +that well+' or 'doesn't work +so good+'). They have a team working on solving the problem but cannot give any timescale as to when this will be done."

I may be paraphrasing to a slight degree - there may be some slight inaccuracies in my recollection- but that was pretty much the gist of it.

Discuss.

thanks .... should have also said we did try un-checking some & all of the Spoltight items and it did make it more responsive, and presumably with 3.1.3 it would have, too - not saying it restored it to normal responsiveness, but switching-off functionality we've come to find useful even before the updates is not really a solution !

I bought my 3G _last week_, my first iPhone. First thing I did was update to iOS 4 as instructed by iTunes. Same hardware as my lovely iPod Touch 2G, which runs fine with iOS 4 so I thought I'd got it covered.

Slow, unresponsive, awful. For months I bleated on about how much I would love an iPhone, now I've got one and it's... er, dreadful! :'(

@Modeler,
You're in luck - you're still in warranty. Take it back, get another 3G with version 3 OS, and don't upgrade until Apple acknowledges the issue and optimizes iOSlow to perform acceptably on the 3G. If they never fix it, at least you'll have an iPhone which is not ... er, dreadful. I've had my 3G for almost two years and I've been very happy with it, until this debacle. I only have another year left on my contract 😟
