Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

well, have just tried it again - unchecking all the criteria & doing reboot (Home & Power buttons ... ) ... wake-up with Home button & slider still real slow, Messages & Settings still real slow, 'though maybe a little quicker, Contacts & Safari seem better, various apps seem better, too .. not a fix, perhaps some alleviation, and we much prefer to have the Spotlight functionality - and all the rest - as we did with 3.1.3 ...

we've found the problem really quite erratic - when I tried to show my wife the problem earlier today, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could be ...

Another "me too". Upgrading to 4.0.1 and disabling spotlight helped somewhat, meaning my phone has gone from completely unusable to barely usable. The update and fix needs to come out YESTERDAY!

A friend just got her first iPhone (a 3G model), and her initial experience hasn't been positive, to say the least...

I've tried as many of you by reinstalling iOS4 whithout success.

Assuming Apple has tested the iphonge 3G with iOS4, if the number of users affected is just a percentage, it must be something different we have. I thought it could be some of the non-Apple applications. The ones than even not running (?) could have an effect. To my mind came quickly Omnifocus and Things as both display on the desktop the number of next actions. I thought they could be a leak memory problem with them or with the new desktop functionality in iOS4. I deleted both of them and now my iphone SEEMS to be working smoothly but a little bit slow.

Maybe some of you could double-check it.

I called Apple Support and spoke with a "Genius". She told me that I needed to try a restore and if that didn't work to take it to my nearest Apple store, which happens to be 45 minutes away, to run diagnostics on it. She said if they can find a problem they would replace the phone. I then asked if they would allow me to upgrade to a 3GS without a new contract and she said that she has not heard of that happening. So there you go, more deniability and more wasted time on my part to fix a problem they obviously caused with the OS4 update. I also asked if I could roll back the OS to version 3 and was told there is no way to do that.

Carbon footprint. iPhone 3G. IOS4. Landfill. I think these are pretty important keywords in the argument too.

There is a cost to all of this that is above and beyond that to our own limited pockets, as bad as that is. Getting rid of a perfectly good phone is a complete waste of everyone's resources.

I think we can use the assumption that this is a universal problem that affects all 3G iphones. Home remedies are a good way of alleviating the symptoms, but aren't really giving a cure to the pandemic.

Out of interest - does anyone know how many (otherwise) mechanically sound 3G iphones there are in circulation? 4 million? Any advance on that?

I have found the new IOS4 operating system to be a complete disater for my basic 8 G 3G iphone. I am on a 24 month contract with orange so I am stuck with this seemingly out of date phone. This update was clearly not made with the 3G in mind. It was a rush update to improve the signal clarity for the iphone 4. At no time on any apple webste has there been any warning that installing the I0S4 would cause the 3G to suffer a loss of function. Since installiing the program it has caused the GPS to go completly wrong saying I am 4 miles away from where I am. This never happened before and was previoulsy on the old operating system very accurate. When using Larger APPs they frequently crash and cause the phone to becaome unresponsive. I have had text messages which have been unsent and undelivered which has greatly affected my work and social life. Most upsettingly, I have lost all my photos having had to do a restore. I had picture of my only nephew which mean a great deal to me and his parents. I am very angry. I want aplle to notify all its customers of the problem with this new software and not advise 3G users to bother upgrading. I am stuck now with a phone on contract for the next 18 months which does not work which will cost me around £900.

OS4 is a disgrace on the 3G. Since I updated the ipod fails to launch half the time, safari freezes up, I miss calls if im using apps, my notes wont save, apps wont start and are too slow to use when they do and the entire system stutters and crashes like an epileptic hurdler.

Was this even tested on a 3G? If it was how could they possibly have the cheek to tell 3G owners this dreadful OS is an 'update'? Its backdated my iphone into an LG Viewty!

I expected so much more from Apple.It really is unacceptable that this OS has been released to 3G users. Ishows complete disregard for long term customers

Got all my speed back after the downgrade, just lost my personal settings, some notes I had taken that I didn't think I needed to back up, and ..... Can't recall now, but I have a me.com subscription, so nothing really important was lost.

Try the link to the downgrade, it works just fine and you will get your old phone back. I tried the first 4.0 upgrade, which went smoothly, but the speed issue wasn't worth the few extra features that the 3G would acquire.

Might get a new iphone this year, will wait to see what shakes out with the antenna thing.

Do the downgrade, you will be happy you did!

the good thing about Apple, they are still allowing downgrade, i mean allowing signatures for 3.1.3.
downgrading is the on SOLUTION till now.

I tried deselecting all the search options as outlined below, while it made a difference, it was only as much as you'd expect when you switch of a near useless memorey draining function. Sadly my phone is still pretty much unusable!

I have had the same problems since the update. Software crashing, Apps crashing, Apps ridiculously slow.

I complained twice, both times I was advised that it wouldn't be the software. Both times followed the instructions knowing full well it would not resolve the problems and hey presto, it didn't.

Finally got through to second level tech support who arranged an appointment with the Genius Bar and suggested a replacement 3GS instead of a like for like. According to the Apple Store, this is simply not possible. So, I have a nice shiny new 3G that, once I sync it back up will perform like an iPhone on Valium.

I have also contacted Consumer Direct, according to them Apple are in breach of the 'Supply of Goods and Services act (1982). Once I find the correct address to send my letter of complaint I'll be outlining this point and others and see what the result is. I suggest others do the same.

Google "How To Downgrade iPhone 3G From iOS 4 To iPhone OS 3.1.3"... you will get the steps. Looks like I can't share links related to jailbroken iphones here. I am not sure if there is any risk involved in downgrading.

This is one problem I didn't experience. I don't think I tried using Maps while I was on iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1, but I've certainly used Maps & GPS since downgrading back to 3.1.3, and everything seems to be working fine, including WiFi. In fact, since making the downgrade, I don't have one single complaint about my 3G iPhone.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It's unsupported by Apple. I don't think I'll miss the outstanding (said sarcastically) support they've given me since tricking me into this destructive OS upgrade.
