Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

I did the same and upgrade to 4.1 too. It is a little bit faster but still slower than 3.1.3. It took a good 10s to open messages and I've switched off auto-capitalization, auto-correcton and check spelling.

I'll see what happens in the next few days.

downloading took 15 min.
upgrading from 3.1.3 to 4.1
backing up, installing 4.1 and sync everything i had to my iPhone 3G took 3 hours.

i can confirm that it works as good as 3.1.3.
i still have internet Tethering on my factory unlocked iPhone 3G. great.

Apple fixed the problem.

The procedure should be, download the 4.1 update first, never choose the ‘Download and Update’ buttton, just choose ‘Download’. Then at your time of convenience, first restore your phone to the factory state, that is choosing the ‘Restore’ button in iTunes, it follows that this will do a complete restore and then it will automatically update the phone to 4.1. After that you will have an iPhone with 4.1, absolutely clean.
it will prompt you to recover from choice all all the back ups you had. Obviously you should choose the most recent one.
The whole process lasted less than an hour for me.

Powering down helps, every few days, say, we've found ...

Switching Spotlight options off (Settings ... ) then powering off, and on again, and selecting the Spotlight options on again, also helps (with iOS4.o.x, at least) ...

... so, when you find you can't answer a 'call, or surf, do one of the above, depending on how much time you have ... we've found it always remembers who called, anyway, so we can 'call them back (and spread the word) ...

Not updating to iOS4 helps even more, but that's probably not what you wanted to know ...

To totally remove the problem, stamp on the 'phone, or throw it in the sea ... ... no, don't do that !

We've one 3G still on 3.1.3, and the other on 4.0.2 ... and I've downloaded iOS4.1, but not installed it yet ... for the obvious reason that I'm not confident it isn't going to make the situation worse, in some way ...

Remind me - what OS is installed now? 4.x or 3.13? If it's 4.x, and you upgrade to 4.1, hopefully you will will notice a bit of an improvement. For me, 4.1 helped a little bit. Unfortunately, no where near enough, but any improvement is always welcome. Keep us posted.

i feel your pain. I finally gave up after following the advice of everyone and anyone, including apple employees. Until a new version of the software is released to address the issue, there's not much you can do but do a restore as a new phone every couple of days or downgrade to 3.1.3

Yes, not from a backup, but as a new Phone. What you can do is backup anyway before to do that and make a second restore, but the first should be done as a new iPhone.

I didn't, anyway, due to the fact I would restore only some applications (I had too many apps). Sync would do the rest. Without restoring from backup, you lose Text messages, anyway.

I found this post through the ABC news article. I specifically upgraded early to the iPhone 4 BECAUSE of the iPhone 3G problems and so did most of my friends and co-workers. Although better, the iPhone 3G is still nowhere near as fast as it used to be with OS 3.x.

I have wasted way too much personal time synchronizing, deleting, restoring, removing and reinstalling apps. I have given up on fixing the iPhone 3G. I bought an iPhone 4 under early contract extension, and will set the 3G on ebay as soon as the 2-year forced contract wait is over so that I can finally unlock it.

In the end I still feel that Apple: 1. was negligent to release the update to iOS4 for iPhone 3G/3GS models when and how it did, 2. Delayed the iOS4.1 "fixes" until initial iPhone 4 sales had peaked, and 3. continues to restrict resources to correct this problem. Where is OS4.1.x? When will the full speed for iPhone 3G/3GS devices be restored?

Although the iPhone 4 is actually worth the upgrade costs and a fantastic device, this problem needs the attention of regulators and subject matter experts.

16 GB for me, and I have to report, like you, some problems but not so heavy. All the problems are connected with memory usage, but keep in mind that is not the Flash size that matters, but RAM, and, as far as I know, all the 3G have the same amount of RAM (128 Mb).

you should all give up, its been alonst 6 months.. APPLE DONT CARE ABOUT YOU. if they did they would have at least admitted the problem.
put 3.1.3 back on & be happy & dont update it again....everything still works.

just dont be a fool & buy another one, as thats what they want.companys generally only pay attention when there loosing money. so if you are not happy, go elsewhere. theres plenty of similar products now & most are cheaper too.

or just put 3.1.3 back on & be happy like me.

Sorry to hear your experience, I do believe certain Genius crews can be a pain on the neck.

I resynced my media and now things seem fine at least for now, who knows what other quirks I might discover later.

OK, while we had dinner, we upgraded my '3G from 4.1 to to 4.2.1 - and it seems quite a bit better - smoother as well as quicker - opening apps (one's we've tried, anyway), doing messages, browsing, 'mail. etc - it's early days, of course !

I check back every few weeks to see how things are going... I tried the initial release of 4.0 and it was a disaster. Took several hours to figure out how to downgrade, which I did last summer, and I have been happy every since with my 3G running 3.1.3. After reviewing everyone's persistent troubles, I am staying away from the upgrade permanently. It must be a processor/memory limitation issue, like trying to drop a V8 into a volkswagen bug. Sounds like a great idea, until you realize you can't keep the front wheels on the ground.

I still enjoy my 3G as much as when I bought it nearly 2 years ago. Will likely get a new one in a year or so, but will not bother to check back on using 4.X on a 3G. I don't read any real success stories, and even those who seem happy with it still mention a slow down to some degree, even if it's not crashing, disconnecting, etc.

I tried to post a link out of ignorance that describes what I did to downgrade, but it was immediately removed. So, all I can say is that one can Google for the solutions, which are easily found and the one I followed worked fine, with my 3G function and speed restored - it's been stable since I did it last July and works as well as it did before trying the OS 4 upgrade.

I understand Apple's legal issues and obligations, and of course, I suppose somehow something might go wrong, so Apple can't sanction the posting of unofficial advice. But, if you are out of warranty, with no solution from Apple (as I was) my single experience with the downgrade was easy, quick and successful and I got my phone back. I've been using Macs for 26 years, so I have nothing to gain by steering anyone in the wrong direction. I also understand Apple's position, but FWIW, it worked for me. If the alternative to this "risky" procedure is a phone you can't live with, and no support forthcoming from Apple, you may make the choice I made. Good luck. I'm not even sure if this post will survive, but I've seen others alluding to a googled solution, so hopefully the moderators will allow people the freedom to seek other solutions, even if unsanctioned. Just my personal experience and opinion. There, I've fulfilled my moral obligation 🙂

just to note, after another month with 4.2.1, it's still OK - if the update had been to this when iOS4 first came-out, we'd not have had a problem with it - perfectly liveable-with, some nice improvements, and it being a little bit slower than under 3.1.3 on some things would have led us to conclude it was showing its age & maybe it was time to update to the latest 'phone ! Batteries still fine, BTW, on both our 'phones (the other still on 3.1.3) ...

let's hope Apple have seriously revised their software processes - they must have, mustn't they ? Then comes January the first, and another seemingly v.elementary problem, that also occurs despite having just fixed an earlier Aussie one ... very odd !

..
