Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

Apple doesn't follow these forums. Please send your response to them as formal feedback. If the 60,000+ people who have viewed this thread had reported the problems they are having, it would be clear to Apple that there is a growing tsunami of customer dissatisfaction heaaing their way.

It's a direct link to Apples tech monitors I'm being told, so flood them with your question and maybe they'll get the message we are unhappy consumers.

Calendar - in our case, it was just that all calendars had become deselected, so Calendar looked to be empty ... so we had to select them anew - on the iPhone / go to Settings / then Mail, Contacts. Calendars / scroll down to Calendars / choose Default Calendar ...

I concur with everyone on here. My 3g is a complete dud now. I even swapped it out at Apple for a brand new handset thinking it was the hardware. The brand new handset wasn't running iOS4, which itself should have been a dead giveaway. Immediately after updating to iOS4 it's back to apps crashing & everything else that people are complaining of. I'd go back to Apple & swap again, only my last swap was the very last day of Applecare.
Hopefully there'll be a fix soon.

Discovered something weird. Removed all my apps out of the "folders" and did a double reset and it seems to be working better. Not sure if the reset did the trick (time will tell) or removing the apps out of the folders did. But worth a shot.

I am having the same problems. Unfornately you cant go back to the 3.1.3. I tried and had no luck. I called AT&T and they couldnt help either. They said once you go to the OS 4 you cant go back. I wish I could too cause I hate the new IOS 4. It *****. My phone is not as smooth as it was and there is nothing different that is so spectacular about the ios4.

there's an iPhone app called Memory Sweep (previous known as Scan Lite, which is what it's icon still shows) that could be worth a try ... allows you to see how memory's being used & free it up a bit ...

I think it may be somewhat rare for anyone from Apple to read anything here. The best way to get anything official to happen is to hit up the official feedback link and post your grievances there.

When I called AppleCare support about this they said they were aware of the issue, were not sure when a fix would be released, and that there was a way to downgrade but I would have to find that information for myself. sigh

this is a particularly ridiculous "upgrade" to the iphone 3g. i could care less about getting pushed for $200 more to buy an iphone 4. i am holding out just because ATT is so bad. in the meantime, only the antenna issue gets press, but this is a horrible package for 3g owners. you get 3 features that dont change the world in exchange for an iphone thats even less reliable than before plus goes on coffee break when typing emails, browsing or using the map function (i missed 4 exits last week alone). the battery life is brutal and i struggle to get through a day even with a mophie. in fact, when talking, it drains faster than the mophie can charge it. simply, if a fully charged 3g sits 8 hours on a night stand with fetch turned off, then i make 2 hours of calls, my battery is completely drained. brutal.

Add me to the list of those with the 3G and battery/performance problems. In the first few days the problems did not arise, in the following the battery slowly started to go from a couple of days to one.

The reactivity of the phone decreased with time. It's really annoying to type on a symbol on the keyboard and wait 1/2 seconds to see the results...

Today I read that Apple is aware about the problem and that they will investigate and fix. I really hope so.

Apple, PLEASE fix this. I loved my iPhone 3G. I now hate my iPhone 3G. I have no immediate plans to buy a new iPhone 4, and if this was some insidious plan to put older phone owners on the upgrade track, you have made a grave mistake in your calculations about customer loyalty. The iOS 4 on the 3G is sluggish, unresponsive, apps (Maps, email, settings, etc., etc.) hang for many seconds before they start responding, and the Bluetooth connection which used to work flawlessly in my car now only establishes a connection 50% of the time. No new apps on the phone - this is all 100% attributable to the new OS. You need to either provide your 3G phone owners with a downgrade path back to OS 3.x or release a patch to 4.0 that "fixes" the performance issues for 3G phones. I find it almost impossible to believe that no one in your QA group raised this as a serious issue prior to releasing the new OS...

For me the upgrade to IOS4 also took forever but eventually completed install successfully.
But since then I have experienced numerous problems:
1) The phone is very slow to respond to ANY and ALL touch or button input, sometime stalling completely on any touch-related commands whatsoever, then the app crashes
2) In many cases, upon opening an application, the app gets to the opening screen, stalls, does not load any data, then crashes....and these mostly Apple apps such as Mail, Messages, Phone, iPod, Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Settings
3) Many 3rd party apps that have been upgraded to iOS4 experience the same problem once opening, after stalling they crash completely
4) During the input of data through the keyboard, iOS4 crashes completely. Going dark then reappearing with the Apple icon boot screen, but never reboots
5) Battery life is miserable but I downloaded Battery Doctor, performed the maintenance, incorporated ALL tips, which have certainly reduced the functions of the phone that I found helpful but the battery life since then has improved greatly
6) While on the phone, the person I am speaking to experiences a period of static which becomes a signal to me that the phone app is about to crash---then it does exactly that. It does this at least once or twice a day from different geographic locations
7) Visual voicemail is lost at least twice a week which is restored with a reboot
These are the most annoying issues I have. I used to say, "I love my iphone. Couldn't live without it. Just hate AT&T because their coverage *****. Now I find my self saying, "This phone is useless, and I'm getting used to living without it.

the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Mine is almost useless. When I go to answer an incoming call, I'll have to swipe the slider about 5 or 6 times.. The slider isn't recognizing my touch and doesn't respond. sometimes it will actually recognize and answer the call, but the slider on screen doesn't move.

Opening almost any program takes forever. Especially safari, google maps, and camera. Safari will ALWAYS try to load the last webpage and will take about 30-60 seconds before it will respond to me touching the X to stop. I can't do any kind of search without stopping it from loading the page first.

Other than the combined inbox, I don't see ANYthing that helps me with iOS 4. The folders is nice, but they're actually too hard to see the icons, so makes it almost as hard as multiple pages of apps.

Animations usually don't happen. When they do, they're jumpy, but usually whatever function is animated will just appear. When I use the slider, it will usually not move, or it will move about half way and then get stuck in the middle. The phone still unlocks, but the slider is stuck in the middle until the screen goes away. When I input my password, it usually doesn't recognize the first number typed, so the second number goes into the first position.. WRONG PASSCODE.. I almost always have to enter it twice.

I have LOVED my iPhone until now, and I've been a mac user for almost 20 years.. Now I just can't wait to get something else.

I restored it and set it up as a new phone and still no improvement.

When the battery is dead, you just lose the call when your phone shuts down.. No notice at all. This isn't new though.

Just chiming in to help get Apple's attention. iPhone 3G performance running iOS 4.0 is embarrassing. Notepad is unusable. Answering a phone call is often impossible. Safari locks up for minutes at a time. All signs point to too much background processing. I can't believe I paid $500 for this phone thinking it would hold its value and age well like their PCs do. I refuse to upgrade to iPhone 4 until Apple proves that they won't make it obsolete in two years.

Add me to the list of those having serious slowdowns after this "upgrade." What seems to have worked fairly well is the DFU Restore (linked from Daringfireball and other sources, including earlier in this thread). I agree that Apple either should have done more testing of this OS on the 3G or not approved it for installation on this phone.
