Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Irons you can try this "magical" process to get to 3.1.3 again, just takes a few steps to follow closely but yes you can.

For both PC and MAC:
http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g%5Bs%5D-from-ios-4- to-ios-313

I just downgraded my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and it works just as before. Familiar icons, speed is back. Just pay attention to all the steps as there are unique files for 3G versus the 3GS model, each of which are listed there.

Though I was happy with performance after previous measures (see earlier post), last night I decided to do a complete restore/setup as new phone. I'd done a good sync/backup but when the restore option offered to setup as new phone I chose that. I lost all my data in a few apps (only CardStar is difficult to replace) but I now have a "new" phone.

Restore/setup as new addressed everything, even text message app comes up quickly. My early 3G with iOS4 is as fast or faster than original.

I posted this in a fresh thread, but have not heard back from anyone, so I don't know if it is working for anyone else, but it has worked perfectly for me. My 3G is back to normal, and working quickly. Here is my post:

Like many of you, I have experienced a noticeable slow down on my 3G after upgrading to OS 4.0. After looking everywhere, and trying many of the "fixes" with minimal improvement, I may have stumbled onto a simple improvement.

I think the new "folders" option, may actually be at least part of the problem. I removed all of my apps from the new folders that I had created when I upgraded, and then I did a "hard reset" (holding down the top button and the front button for several seconds and continuing to hold them down while disregarding the "power off slide" prompt, and not releasing the buttons until the apple icon shows up on the black screen). After a minute or so, the phone relaunched, and -- it is a lot faster!

I believe that it is as fast as it was before the upgrade, however, I really don't remember how fast it was before, but I KNOW that it is faster than it was before I deleted the new "folders".

Give it a try and let me know if this helps you,

Lincoln

@Christopher,
The file you found in the Trash ( iPhone1,23.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw or similar) is the v3.1.3 firmware "image" file. It does not contain the backups of your data that were made by iTunes back when you had 3.1.3 on your iPhone.

Unfortunately, the old v3 backups were also deleted by the iOSlow installer when it did the crapdate† to v4. Wouldn't want to confuse things by having old backups muddled up with the new ones, would we...?!

I found my v3 backups on my Time Machine volume, located in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

Your old iPhone backups may be there too (assuming you have a Time Machine or other backup regimen in place).

v. - the process of installing a newer version of inferior software, thereby destroying happiness and customer satisfaction.

Hello
excuse me for my poor english, I'm French but I would like to explain my theory about this problem

Is there someone here who try to compare iphone 3G perf with or without activating airplane mode ?

I play a lot two games which consume heavy ressources : Guitar tour hero 2 and Guitar Hero

With the 3.1.3 iOS I never had lags and when I installed the iOS 4 lags appeared !
But I notice that lags disappeared when I don't have any network (in subway for example) so I try to put the airplane mode ON and then I notice the lag disappeared !

My theory is that this iOS has some problems with the network detection and it's visible on the 3G ...

But it's just my Theory, so I let you try and tell me your opinion about it please

my previous post on how to downgrade was removed by apple (someone there must read them then, even if they do ignore us) as apple considered downgrading was jailbreaking!.

anyway...
I downgraded to 3.1.3 its not too hard to do (cant give you links but do an internet search for "iphone 3g downgrade 3.1.3" or remove iphone OS4...

basically all you need is the correct 3.1.3 firmware (might be in your recycle bin - iOS4 deletes your old one in the hope you dont find it - if not you can download it from a few places, make sure its the one for your model - iphone 3G)
hold left shift when clicking restore & it'll ask you which one you want to use (otherwise itll be the same 4.0.1 or whatever you used last, point it at the 3.1.3 one)
let it restore & you need recboot to finish it (& libUSB too especially if your using vista)

when I did it I lost everything so make sure you back up everything 1st.

but yeah, 3.1.3 works just like you remembered it & all the apps you updated to be 4.0 compatible still work with 3.1.3

I've had the same issue, i found that every now and then rebooting it works for a while, but its a matter of opening apps or opening one app many times, its my guess either a memory leak in iOS or really a matter of memory hog, now i know apple will crucify me for this but i did resort to a jailbreak after i searched and found that there is a way to get it to run vram, increasing the ram virtually is just enough to keep it to speed I've found, only down side is yes it does use up the cycles in the flash memory, but it would be about the same as a sync in cycle usage aside from how the os and device already constantly uses the flash memory, it just adds to the data bandwidth usage to and from the flash memory but by doing so allows for abit more operating memory 🙂

I deleted 25 apps from my phone and noticed a SIGNIFICANT improvement! I also reboot the phone once a day or so. I wrote Apple about the problem. They told me to keep a log for 24 hrs. of every time the phone had a problem. They linked me to this discussion (which I had read already. Do they actually know we are here!?). They asked me to email them my log as an attachment and said they were sending it to the Apple engineers! I hope they will help us with some software fix. In the meantime, I recommend streamlining your apps. I kept my folders, by the way, but fewer apps made a huge performance difference.

@Smythley - the way back to 3.1.3 is not as techy as it sounds on Windows. Google the Lifehacker instruction article, read to the end and ensure you download all the correct software and run it with the correct administrator and compatibility settings (easily found in the properties menu), then action it step by step and you should be back to a happy 3G in under 30 minutes.

That said, it's your phone, your responsibility. It worked for me though.

@ Kasaar
For me, deselecting non-essential options in Spotlight Search did help, but it did not entirely resolve speed issues and app crashes.
Downgrading my 3G from iOS 4.0.1 back to 3.1.3 fixed everything (obviously).
Personally, I'm finished trying to force this 4.x "square peg" into my "round hole" 3G. I'll stay on the old OS, and retain my sanity.

Upgrade popped up the other day in itunes... I said OK. When done things were miserable:
1. Things were sooo slow. Repeated alarms were ringing...
2. It turned out that alarms that had been set in clock application had multiplied 10-20+fold... duplicated. There was at least a thousand of them.
I think that may have been the root of the problem as all these alarms were clogging up the system.
Took the iphone into ATT store and they say call apple and ask to be downgraded back to OS3.
Call Apple and they say no you can't downgrade and had me do a reinstall... first one didn't work.
Next day I got upgraded to a higher level apple tech and did the reinstall successfully.
Now things are decent... but haven't had time to really evaluate...

I have the iPhone 3G with iOS4 installed, and have come across two "tricks" to make the phone perform satisfactorily:

1. Do the hard reset (sleep/wake button + home button until the phone restarts).
2. Make the following changes in your preferences:

Settings > General > Home Button > Spotlight Search ... then uncheck the search services, except for contacts, music, mail... the stuff you really want to be able to search.

Those two steps have made running iOS4 on the 3G O.K.

I agree with your workaround.

I had considerable performance issues with multiple phones. I applied the changes and performed a reset afterwards. No real issues . I asked users to post success / failure rates but I've only seen one or two so far.

After the iOS4 update all of your Spotlight Search options may have been selected.

On the 3G iPhone Go to SETTINGS> GENERAL> HOME BUTTON> SPOTLIGHT SEARCH

On the 3GS Go to SETTINGS> GENERAL> SPOTLIGHT SEARCH

De-select the search options you don't want (I just use messages notes). The more options selected the more processing / memory is used by your phone.

Reset Phone -

Group, Please let the forum know if this worked. It takes about a minute or so to do.

@kasaar,
A number of users have posted back regarding this "fix". For some, it helps, but it didn't work for me. Removing the spotlight options seems to reduce the sluggishness a bit, but it's not permanent. A hard-reboot also helps, but within a day or so, the buggy/sluggish performance returns. I've found that deleting most of my apps also helped to reduce the jerky/laggy performance.

The memory usage on my 3G has crept back up to 95+% -- that's with Spotlight indexing nothing more than my 100 or so contacts.

The spotlight trick doesn't restore the broken features. For example, the only option I have now for Passcode Lock is "Immediate". All of the timed options have vanished since installing iOSlow.
