Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Irons you can try this "magical" process to get to 3.1.3 again, just takes a few steps to follow closely but yes you can.

For both PC and MAC:

I just downgraded my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and it works just as before. Familiar icons, speed is back. Just pay attention to all the steps as there are unique files for 3G versus the 3GS model, each of which are listed there.

I had slowness on my 3G after upgrading to iOS 4, but I found a simple fix here:
http://www.davekawalec.com/2010/07/3-steps-to-fix-iphone-3g-slowness-after-ios4- upgrade/

"1. Turn off Spotlight Search: Go to Settings | General | Home Button | Spotlight Search, and uncheck everything
2. Reboot your iPhone 3G: Just a normal power down and restart
3. Turn Spotlight Search back on: Go back to same screen as step 1, and re-check everything you unchecked in Step 1"

It looks like it's some sort of problem with search. I followed those steps and my slowness problems were gone.

I had updated to 4.0.1 and much to my dismay, my phone became almost useless and slow. Doing the hard resets only is a temp fix and the spotlight fix only helps a bit. Yes I did a clean restore and started from scratch. After a few days, I got fed up and restored back to 3.1.3 (Google is your friend). As much as I like the folder features and such, it is not work the headache and will stick to 3.1.3 until something is done to fix the issues for us 3G owners.

no need to fret - we found, there's a cure that does pretty well, and takes just a few minutes with no loss of data ...

we found it's important to do all the steps - ie: uncheck all the Spotlight items (in Setttings / General / Home Button / Spotlight Search), then power down (Power button held down, slide to power off), then recheck as many Spotlight items as you like ... to get the full performance lift ...

after a few days, we found it suddenly slowed again, and we needed to power down (nothing more) again to regain the lift ...

give it a try !!

Use this to downgrade to 3.1, it works.

The only problem is that I had to restore my phone and it started from scratch, but all of my pertinent stuff (contacts, aps, photos) was backed up.

Unfortunately i think the only way to punish Apple for this blatant abuse of their customers is to stop buying their products. My love for Apple has gone out the Windows.

I'm getting the impression that many folks on this forum are not aware that you can downgrade the OS to 3.1.3. This solves all the problems associated with the 4.0 upgrade. Granted, this is not ideal and Apple should be providing the solution but if you want your phone to work then this is really the only solution for now.

Now that I have 'bitten the bullet' and restored the phone by clicking on the button in iTunes that warns you that you will loose everything the phone is significantly faster (too early to say if it will stay that way). I was able to select a restore point from more than 3 months ago so I was interested to see if the old operating system had been restored as well - but no; its still running OS 4.01.

I blogged it, like many others have - this was totally unacceptable for a company like Apple that usually produces products that work pretty well. I can't answer calls because the green slider on the front page freezes up or balks and then the call is gone before it frees up. I have not been able to answer almost a single call since iOS 4 was installed on my 3G iPhone ... I just have to retrieve them from voicemail and call them back.

Factory reset did not help at all. Hard reset ("forced" reboot) (4 or 5 times) did not help at all. Shut down and restart didn't help...or if it did, it didn't last long.

I turned off Spotlight indexing for all categories, but initially that didn't seem to help - perhaps later on it helped.

HOWEVER, I was able to get my 3G to run quite a bit faster by deleting these apps: FaceBook, LinkedIn, Google Mobile, IMDb, NYTimes, Yelp!, TweetDeck, WebEx, Brightkite - who knows which ones were eating up memory or CPU, but somewhere in that list there are one or two that were causing problems by eating memory or CPU cycles.

Now it's almost back to normal.

But I went shopping for a DroidX 10 days ago after an Apple Genius "blew me off" and said he would not even look at my iPhone - I was to "go home and reset it to factory conditions" before he would even speak with me. If someone had a good smartphone that works in US, Europe and South Asia, I would switch in a flash. (Flash? ... don't get me going on that!)

i tried the dual reboot, i tried unchecking (first some, then) all the spotlight search options...and a variety of other wacky fixes. my iphone 3g was still unbearably slow.

then, i downgraded to 3.1.3 using one of the tutorials easily found on the internet (or in this thread, unless they've been removed).
the phone's working fine, now.

sorry, apple. i'll be jailbreaking next.

There were instructions on Lifehacker on how to roll back to 3.1.3 that did not involve Jailbreaking. I don't know if following those now would get your old phone performance back, but when I did that to undo 4.0, my phone worked the same as it did before the upgrade. Just be sure to do back up first because I did somehow manage to lose my old Notes contents.

we found double hard reboots (hold Power & Home buttons down, and when it's done, do it again, contiguously) gave short term relief, and that the Spotlight fix (deselect all options, Power down, Power up, reselect all options) works for much longer - two to five days, it varies ! Relief, not a cure, but it's generally bearable / workable, we find (today was a good day) ...

As we understand it, not every 3g iPhone is affected - ie: many do not have a problem, and many do have a problem ... go figure ! Given that, it must be quite possible for Apple's testing to have shown no problem ...

Every now & then, even the best organisations get issues which are difficult & surprisingly time-consuming to get to the bottom of ... either way, we have no doubt Apple are working on it, and no doubt they'll find a fix ...

Which is not to say we don't have our fingers crossed, or that we don't kick the wall every now & then !
