Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Irons you can try this "magical" process to get to 3.1.3 again, just takes a few steps to follow closely but yes you can.

For both PC and MAC:
http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g%5Bs%5D-from-ios-4- to-ios-313

I just downgraded my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and it works just as before. Familiar icons, speed is back. Just pay attention to all the steps as there are unique files for 3G versus the 3GS model, each of which are listed there.

I have a 3G and updated to iOS4.0.1, hoping it would resolve the slowness issue. It didn't. I followed all the advice about closing out Safari, turning off the indexing, etc. I kept 4.0.1 on for a week and couldn't work with the constant slowness so I used the Lifehacker article to downgrade to 3.1.3.

My question: now that 4.0.2 has been released and it includes the PDF exploit fix, how do those of us on 3.1.3 get the security hole fixed without upgrading the OS?

Personally, I'd rather keep 3.1.3 with the PDF vulnerability than upgrade to 4.x on an iPhone 3G.

I agree with you. You have the option of calling Apples customers public relation, consumer relation (can't recall exact department) they put in an appointment for me at the Apple store and they replaced my 3G no charge.

Your second option is to search this forum or the Internet and follow the steps on down grading your phone back to iOS firmware 3.1.3, there a lot of success stories of people who completed the task and are happy once again with their 3G phones.

replying to myself.

OK - I followed a suggestion and it fixes all my problems:

Downloaded latest iOS4.x version but did not install it.
Synced to iTunes
Did an iTunes restore from that sync.
Rebooted to the new iOS4- all OK - all apps working.

Shame I had to do it twice and shame we were not alerted to do a "clean" install rather than incremental update.

When I restored as a new phone, everything is still on iTunes. However, it was not on my phone, since it's now "new." When I plugged in my "new" phone, I set it up with all the preferences I like for syncing, podcasts, videos, photos, etc., etc. on iTunes, using the tabs at the top of iTunes when the phone is listed in the devices on the left.

Then, I selected the Apps I want to have on the phone again, and made folders, and selected "apply" so iTunes will remember what I did with the apps. My contacts (phone numbers) were still there, on my phone, because I told iTunes to sync my contacts. Before putting anything else on my phone, I put my custom ringtones back on the phone. Then, I put all the books, music and videos that I wanted. After that, I went to settings to customize the phone more to my liking.

I am very happy. iOS 4.0.2 is working GREAT on my iPhone 3G now, after 6 weeks of misery. It was so worth the time to set it up again as a new phone!

Before restoring as a new phone, I also sent a report to Apple that they told me the engineers would look at. I HOPE that Apple will fix this problem, but until they do, I am loving my iPhone 3G again!

Try this "band-aid" as a temp fix (until Apple does the right thing and fixes it properly.) It has made my iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0.2 usable again:

1. Go to Settings | General | Home Button | Spotlight Search and un-check everything.

2. Reboot your iPhone 3G normally.

You lose the "Spotlight Search" for now (I don't use it anyway) but the phone speeds up noticably.

On a side note, I too have noticed that my AT&T 3G service is now running faster on my iPhone 3G than a few (6 Mbps+) WiFi networks... Yet another thing that Apple has screwed up.

Has Apple been taken over by Disney? A bunch of things seem to have been "Mickey Moused" lately...

---ATTENTION---

If your iPhone 3G is having problems with iOS 4, post something on here. As we've heard, Steve Jobs like "hard data".

If you don't post, then he assumes "you don't have a problem." Be counted!

I managed to get mine back to reasonable speed by restoring to "new"
I then sync'd it to my iTunes, but I did not add any music or Videos and only a minimum of apps (those I use most)
I have an iPod and an iPad, so many of the apps I moved to the iPad.
It seems to be back to a reasonably quick speed (at least much better than after the update) so i can use the phone... as a phone...
But it's no longer the iPhone I had before as I had to sacrifice so much.

I repeat it again... Apple, you screwed up here and in the meantime the Android phones are catching on!

Wake up, Mr Jobs and do something about the iPhone mess, you're sure to lose market share doing business this way

Install as new phone does not make it faster.

If you updated from 4.0.0 to 4.0.1 its as fast as it ever is going to be under IOS4.

Maybe you think its as fast because you dont remember what it was like when it was NEW, I can and it is no way as fast.

IOS4.0 was the worst of all with constant crashes, IOS4.0.1 made it slightly better, less crashes freezing but it is still laggy and is frequently overwhelmed when texting, phoning or using calendar. A clean installation with hardly anything working (spotlight, location services etc etc etc all turned off), hardly any apps and with plenty of space works frustratingly slowly. I wont even go into the heating or battery issues.

IOS4.0.2 is only about the PDF exploit so I dont know how it can be better than IOS4.0.1.

The problem here is two fold with Hidef's fix. One, you have to carve out a ton of time to do this, secondly, one must be somewhat technically savvy. Luckily I'm the latter, however, time is something I just don't have.

Second problem is a wipe and reload may work for some. The Apple Store Genius told me that this upgrade has affected 3 out of 4 iPhone 3G's. As I understand the problem to be that iOS4 requires more memory allocated than what iPhone 3g physically has, which is the main cause of the crashes. Obviously this isn't a problem on iPhone 4's.

So, goes back to to this. What may work for you isn't going to work for the masses. If you have the time, skill and the 1 out of 4 iPhones that don't have the issues - Go for it! If not, most will have to wait for the fix from Apple (if). For me, I downgraded back to 3.1.3 and applied the theory, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The phone is night and day between os4 and os3.

Just to say i have done lots of research on this and although technically rumour i find it a little reassuring to read.

This is from macrumours...

+"A new email from Apple CEO Steve Jobs appears to confirm that the company will soon be issuing a software update to address issues with the iPhone 3G's performance under iOS 4. Late last month, the company acknowledged that it was "looking into" user reports of the issues.+

+The new email came in response to feedback sent by a customer who expressed frustration over the performance of his iPhone 3G, calling it "dog slow" and pointing to problems with system responsiveness when scrolling, zooming, and typing.+

+I've waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I've read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I'm not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.+
+Jobs' response was unsurprisingly terse:+

+Software update coming soon.+

+Sent from my iPhone+
+While Jobs did not offer details on the planned software update, he was most likely referring to iOS 4.1, which has been in testing with developers. Anecdotal reports have indicated that the iOS 4.1 betas do seem to be improving performance on the iPhone 3G, but confirmation that the company is addressing the issues will be welcome news to users who have been frustrated by iOS 4 performance on their devices."+

Hope this sets a few minds at rest.

I just updated to iOS 4.1 (I'm a registered developer with Apple) I can tell you from my preliminary testing that this update will fix everyone's problems. I will have more updates soon, as I still feel it's a little early to tell. I'm not 100% sure if it's just the reboot which is included with the upgrade or if the 330MB software update actually made the difference. However, what I AM sure of is the following...

Text messaging is MUCH faster - the letters all type when I touch them. No more pressing the letter and waiting three seconds for each letter.

Mail is much faster. When I am in my mailbox and go from account to account or even from folder to folder, it responds right away instead of just sitting there, looking at me.

Web browsing is MUCH faster. I can actually navigate on the web now, with MULTIPLE pages open at the same time! I could not even have one page open prior to this update without it taking about 15 to 20 seconds for that page to load. While this page was loading, I was unable to pich to zoom also. Now, that has been fixed.

Switching between app pages is MUCH smoother. The last page will actually "bounce" back when you try to swipe to the right of it again. I haven't seen my p hone do that in about 2 months. I'm so happy!

When I press the home button, all of my app pages actually fly by and it takes me right to the home screen again. Just like it did prior to the 4.0 update!

As I said before, I will continue to test and let you all know if this is the end all fix for the sad 3G issue.

Your wrong this video with the new 4.1 developers version states:

Test results:

* Messages: iOS 4.1 Wins (By a Little)
* Maps: iOS 4.1 Wins (By a Lot)
* Photos: iOS 4.1 Wins (Just Barely)
* Safari: iOS 4.1 Wins (Just Barely)

http://www.redmondpie.com/iphone-3g-performance-test-ios-4.0-vs-ios-4.1-video/

SO its barely done anything to speed it up so it isnt going to be nice and snappy!

I am just going to downgrade back to version 3.

Mines running much better after i performed a restore as a new phone. Turn off auto brightness, also turn off spotlight search and the phone performs okish.

I agree its not a solution but it is running much better after i did a restore.

I guess its like installing windows 7 staight over xp rather than doing a complete fresh install.

Its ok to have your service packs and your windows updates after the install but you are best off doing a fresh install for a compeltely new operating system.
