Alpine CDA-9884 car stereo won't charge iPhone 4. Worked fine with 1st gen

Why can I not charge my iPhone 4 from my car stereo as I have done for the past couple of years with my 1st gen iPhone?
Does the new battery charge differently?

Various 3rd party charges/devices had a similar issue when the 3GS was released and the slightest difference in voltage or PIN changes on iP4 can cause older 3rd party items to no longer be compatible... like the BOSE sound dock for example...version I worked fine with 2G and 3G but when 3GS came out it would give an error message that said the accessory is not made to work with this device and suggested the iPhone be placed into Airplane mode... BOSE Sound dock II resolved this but the point is it took a hardware change on that 3rd party device...

I have the alpine cda 9853... (which is about 5-6 yrs old)... played music and charged my iphone 2g.. played music on my 3g but did not charge.... plays my music fine with my iphone 4 but does not charge . . . Which cable did you buy? Do you think the same cable you bought would fix the charging problem?

Also.. other than buying the new cable, is there another connector for that cable that would fit into the iphone 4 WITH the bumper on?

Thanks!!

While the iPhone uses a proprietary port, the cable plugs into the computer's USB port. Until last year's 3Gs Apple's iPhone connector was also compatible with FireWire. (My original iPhone came with both a FireWire and a USB cable.) I suspect your problem is the same one I had with my car adapter - the cable is FireWire based rather than USB. For me the solution was to buy a converter like this one.
