Alpine CDA-9884 car stereo won't charge iPhone 4. Worked fine with 1st gen

Why can I not charge my iPhone 4 from my car stereo as I have done for the past couple of years with my 1st gen iPhone?
Does the new battery charge differently?

Various 3rd party charges/devices had a similar issue when the 3GS was released and the slightest difference in voltage or PIN changes on iP4 can cause older 3rd party items to no longer be compatible... like the BOSE sound dock for example...version I worked fine with 2G and 3G but when 3GS came out it would give an error message that said the accessory is not made to work with this device and suggested the iPhone be placed into Airplane mode... BOSE Sound dock II resolved this but the point is it took a hardware change on that 3rd party device...

I looked and found an Alpine kce-422i but Crutchfield indicates it's incompatible with my CDA-9884.
My stereo doesn't use USB where you can connect to the outside. Instead, it's a normal iPhone wide connector that connects to the bottom, then goes behind the dashboard into the back of the head unit ... almost looks like an old ADB connector or something.

So if I get a head unit that allows usb plug into the front, then it should probably work?

It's the iOS4.0 that is messing it up, I have a 3GS and work at a Car Audio Shop and 100% of every model of every manufacturer does not work with the OS4. Some of these radio were just release less then a month ago built specificaly for iPhones, and after the update to OS4 they no longer function. Same Phone, same radio, different OS different results. Sonys will just sit there frozen with Ipod displayed on the screen. Pioneer Radios will display searching then after a few mins give Error-19. Kenwoods flash Searching.... forever. Alpines display Device Error, the alpine thats made for iphone and pandora never recognize the phone or ipod even if you have the pandora alpine link app running. JVC displays Searching forever. So your going to have to wait 6 months or more before you can get a new radio that can work with the OS4 and iPhone 4. If you have an older iPhone and want to keep your radios working with them, just dont allow the upgrade. Hopefully apple can patch whatever is blocking the comunication ports these radios use, or put the old code they removed back in so they become backwards compatible, but I wouldn't bet on it, if they break your stuff and do nuthing about it you have to buy more stuff, which makes them more money. Just a Heads Up. Was hoping to come here and see some hadn't had the same problems but looks like theres alot of issues with OS4 tbh.

I had this problem with a jvc kdhd1 and the iPod unit.

Purchased a scoshe converter that plugs into the end of the 30 pin coming from the unit. Works like a charm, charges well, And all data goes through. The adapter was about $20 on the big prime online shopping place.

I'm having a different problem with the newer jvc head unit. Charging is fine but no data.

The scoshe will fix the problem you describe. Hopefully, you can get audio, too.

I am having the same problem with my iPhone 4. My older Alpine IVA-W205 will play songs but will not charge the phone. I have a Alpine iDA-X303 that is only a year old but it plays songs and charges my iPhone 4. I plan to email Alpine about my W205 not charging but I think it might be due to the fact it does not use a USB connection but an older round pin style connector. My older first gen iPhone works fine on both head units.

That looks interesting. Thanks. Does that still allow music to play through the head unit while charging? Does it simply connect to the end of the cable that normally plugs into the iPod?

($60? For that? Wow...and I thought Apple accessories were overpriced...)

That unit ONLY affects the charging. If your iPod/iPhone plays through the stereo before it will do after except it will now charge. If it did not play before this won't make it work.

You may not need any adapter. I had this problem of the head unit (can't remember which model mine is) no longer communicating with the ipod touch and the Touch reporting that the accessory is not compatible. All I needed to do was press the reset button on the head unit (behind the removable front panel no mine) and then reset my ipod. All is fine now! Glad I tried this before spending £20 on a Scosche Passport!

Alpine or Apple really need to fix this. It is getting irritating. My 30gb Ipod 4th Gen worked perfect in my CDA-9884. It charged and searched quickly. I then bought a 32gb Ipod touch 3g and it wouldn't charge but still transferred data correctly. After updating to iOS4 I now have an issue. At first it would throw an error at me, and after doing what one of the posters suggested, I reset the Apline unit and it is now able to at least play songs. Still does not charge, and now it searches through my music slower than a person with severe mental retardation. APPLE - FIX THIS

The fix is you need an adapter.

Apple changed the way iPods charge from Firewire to USB. Your old iPod will charge using firewire but the new one wont thus why it will not charge. When manufacturers started supporting the iPod they only put in the firewire charging and thus when the switch was made (they were warned it would happen) many had the problem you have.
