well, here it is: i went to my appt at the Genius Bar and after a few diagnostic tests my new friend Benjie told me to go over to the AT&T store across the hall and get a new SIM, and that he would keep my case open if i needed to come back. I went over to AT&T and the guy gave me a new SIM but almost immediately i was still having the same issue. I went back to the Genius and without even thinking twice he popped in the back and just gave me a new handset. He said it didnt appear to be a problem with the phone, but something made it just decide to not recognize SIM cards anymore so it would have to go back to HQ. So far no problems with the new handset what-so-ever. Therefore, if youre having this issue dont let them tell you "it's just the SIM." going to your local Apple store, explaining your situation and asking them to swap it for a new one seems to be the best answer, at least in my experience.
