no sim problem

mine too. saw that and thought is was strange also. maybe the software to run it takes up that much room?

They're probably not counting the amount of memory iOS4 takes up. 14GB Free Memory + 2GB for the Operating System. I know this type of notation is common on other devices as well.

I thought about that but my 3G I had before always said 16GB regardless of the software.

I had the same issue. I took my phone into ATT store and they gave me a new sim card and I have had no issues today. Maybe I just got lucky. I would keep asking for a new sim until the issue is fixed.

An update. I just left the Apple store here in B'ham, AL. They immediately replaced the phone. They apparently knew about it and it is a bad chip in the affected phones. Best bet, get a genius bar appointment and replace the phone. I'll update if I have any more issues. Good Luck to the rest of you.

I had this same issue yesterday with my gf's phone. It worked fine until I got home and plugged it into iTunes. It immediately said "No SIM Installed". I reset all settings, network settings, took the sim out and back in and did a hard reset. Nothing worked. I called the Apple Store and they said to bring it in and have it checked. The rep outside the store watching the lines removed the SIM card and did a hard reset. It worked for her. She told us to get the SIM replaced at AT&T too. We did that, and haven't run into anymore issues with her phone. Aside from the obvious reception issue.

I had already taken the steps to replace the sim and hard reset with ATT before I went to the store for replacement.

I've had the same problem a couple of times today. Suddenly said "No Sim Card." I did a reset and it fixed the issue. Then I came home and saw this thread. Wondering if I should make an appointment.

I've had this problem since yesterday morning. I did resets (hard and soft), removed and put back the sim, and did the airplane mode thing. It temporarily fixes the problem but it always comes back. I went to ATT today and got a new sim. The problem was fixed... for about 5 hours. I made an appointment at the Apple store tomorrow for 5:30pm. I'll see what a "genius" has to say about it.

I just called the apple iphone number and spoke with a rep. She told me to do a hard reset (which I had done 4 times with no success), told me to take out sim card and put it back in (which I had done 3 times with no success), she had me reset the network settings (which didn't work) and she has now asked me to restore the phone. I'm in the process of that now. She said it the problem was still there afterwards to call them back with my case number and they would help me get into contact with AT&T and let them know it was not a hardware problem. (Basically they would call ATT for me and tell what was going on and let AT&T assist). So I will see what happens once it is restored. I actually have already made an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow at 11:45 so I may go there tomorrow regardless. If I can avoid a visit to the AT&T store I will certainly do it. I will keep you up to date.

Had this issue resolve by getting a whole new iphone. No matter what i did to the phone, it only worked for a while then got sim not inserted error. this happend about 7 eight times since i got the phone. i called apple and they had me re inserted sim card, then had it replaced, then reseted network settings, then factory reseted the phone and finally apple decided it was none of the above and gave me a new phone. So theres no magical fix here or trouble shooting to do other then take it to apple and swap it out. no matter what i did the phone worked for a while then got sim not inserted.

Same problem, Airplane mode seems to reset it. Tried with 3G off and it seemed better.

Waited in line 6 hours...brand new phone out of the box in Apple store says "No SIM card installed" AT&T guys put a new sim card in, and the phone never activated for 27 hours, brought back to Apple store got a brand new phone, three hours later starts saying "No SIM card installed" shut down phone, re-insert SIM card...Wait a couple hours and it does it again!!! aaahhh!

Woke up this morning with no sim again. Tried the airplane mode trick and it's ok again for now. I made a point of not moving the phone whilst doing it. That kind of rules out a hardware problem. Sim cards the wrong size etc all sounds like an excuse to get you off the line/out the store. Anyone know how to get a bug report to apple?
