no sim problem

I activated my Iphone4 and it said no sim found. I took the sim out put it back in and the phone worked. Five minutes later said no sim. Took it to the AT&T store and had a new sim put in. The phone worked for a few minutes then went back to no sim. Spent a few hours on home phone with apple. Tried reset but still happening. No answers from apple. Has anyone else had this happen?

An update. I had an appointment at Apple store here in B'ham, AL. They immediately replaced my phone. The tech guy I spoke with hadn't seen the issue but apparently his boss knew about the issue and said is a bad chip in the affected phones. Best bet, get a genius bar appointment and they should replace the phone. so far no more issues but I'll update if I have any more. Good Luck to the rest of you.

I'm having the same issues. I got it once the day I got the phone, once the next morning, and then countless times during work that day. I went to AT&T right after work and they swapped my sim card. Didn't help. I called Apple and a senior rep walked me through the usual steps. It's only happened once today, but even once is too often. I don't have an Apple store anywhere around me, so he said he would call me back in a few days to see if it had happened more or less after the troubleshooting we tried. An hour later he called me back and asked a few followup questions. He said that if it keeps up we will have to exchange it.

I have to agree with the assumption that it's a lot of 'startup' traffic on the network. I installed OS4 on a 3G and had the problem a few times during 'launch' day. I'd guess it's not happening anymore for anyone? My phone has been fine since Thursday.

It could also be an OS issues that may be fixed with the update on Monday.

I have had same issue after leaving iPhone4 plugged in last night to charge. Woke up to "No SIM" error. Called ATT immediately at beginning of business hours today. Initially told SIM card should be replaced.

As part of resolution, rep. at 800 no. promised to call local ATT store when it opened to ensure micro SIM was available and that I would not have to wait for replacement. After no return phone call from ATT 800 rep, I called ATT again a few hours later.

Next rep. directed me to remove and re-insert SIM. That worked. Just posting my experience so others are aware of issue. Still plan to go into ATT store for replacement SIM and will setup appointment for replacement iPhone4 in case issue is not SIM related. I use iPhone for business, personal use and 95% of all communications including email. Cannot afford for issue to crop up again unexpectedly,...

Love my iPhone 4, but add me to the list of "No Sim Installed" error message recipients. It happened the first time after I parked iPhone 4 on my charger dock. After turning phone off/on to no avail, I called Apple Support, the woman talked me through the Airplane Mode trick (on/off about 5 times), then told me to take out & reinsert sim card. That did the trick...until 6 hours later when I got the same message, prompting me to remove & reinsert sim card yet again.
So far, so good, but I am glad there is a 30 day warranty.

okay I had my genius bar appointment this morning. I went through what I had done (hard reset, remove/replace sim card, reset network settings, restore to original settings) and none had worked. The Apple employee took the sim out of her phone and placed it in my phone and instantly there was service. She put my sim card back in and of course the phone was still working. She played around with it and I had brought my Macbook with me so I was able to plug it in and restore the settings while she stood there with me and it didn't say "no sim card." She came and gave me a new sim card and said the only problem was that they couldn't activate it there at the store. Luckily there was an AT&T kiosk right around the corner. She told me to go there have them to activate it and if I had problems to come back. I told her I would do that, eat lunch and play with it for a while before heading home (live about 45 minutes from store).

She said if the problem continued they would have to switch out the phone. I told her I was absolutely fine with switching the phone out and she said the only problem was they didn't have any phones to replace mine with at this time. So my situation was to possibly give them my phone and be out of luck until a new one came in or hope the sim card would work and continue to work. I had it activated and I've not had the "no sim card" message show up in 5 hours. No problems so far.

One interesting thing (to me anyway) was that she checked to see if Apple needed to "collect" my phone due to this problem. She said collected phones were sent to engineers to study and solve the issues. They had already collected another phone that morning with same problem.

So it "seems" like it was a bad sim card but won't really know until it doesn't happen for a few days.

Mine is still doing it. Been doing it since launch day. I went to AT & T on day two and the guy did a reset and it worked so then he said if it continues to go to contact Apple. I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow morning, but I might try AT & T again just to see if they can replace the SIM on it if they have any on hand. I've never noticed it doing it when it was not being used or held. Usually I can get service back by either doing airplane mode or by resetting it. I already restored the phone back to factory defaults and reinstalled the software and that didn't work either.

I had the same no sim issue with Orange here in the UK. I went back to the Apple store initially but was told I couldn't get an appointment for seven days. It was also quite clear having approached 2 staff that they had been briefed to lie about the no sim issue claiming 'they'd never heard it' the instant it was mentioned. I took it back to Orange and got a refund. Apple treat customers like dirt.

Add me to the list of iPhone 4 users with the No SIM problem. I was fine for the first two days, after that I have seen it three times. The airplane mode trick seems to get it back working again. That leads me to believe it is a software issue. I will hold out until the rumored patch comes out to see if it fixes the issues. There is no Apple store around me, so no Genius trading in my future.

I am also have this problem on a 32GB iPhone4 that I got on launch day at Best Buy in Grapevine,TX. I saw the problem happen almost immediately and it has been happening ever since. I am subscribed to this and other threads, so I have been trying what others suggested.

Airplane mode does seem to always "fix" the problem, but the No Sim Card error happens randomly - whether the phone is moving (or not), in use (or not). I had reseated my SIM card to no avail, then I took it back to BestBuy and had them swap out the SIM for a brand new one - still no fix.

I will get it swapped out, but unsure if Apple store should do that or BestBuy (since the latter does not have any new phones in stock right now)

Just want to be on record as having the same problem. If I do a reboot, the phone finds the network about half the time but after anywhere from five minutes to six hours, the phone loses contact with the network and I get the "No Sim" message. Tried re-seating the Sim but that doesn't change anything. I honestly don't think it is a Sim problem but I am not the expert. Also tried contacting AT&T but they act like they haven't heard about the problem.
