iPhone microphone not working

My new iPhone's microphone doesn't seem to be working properly. I can hear people who call but they can't hear me unless I switch to speaker mode.

Without speaker mode, I can only be heard if I shout VERY loudly. I've tried calling a few different people and the result is the same.

Any thoughts?

Yea if I smack my iPhone 4 it works. It only started this week when I upgraded to iOS 4.3 well then I upgraded to 4.3.1 and it got worse!!! Now its in the Bluetooth and speakerphoneUser uploaded file I called customer service and they said to go to a apple store. I live in bfe Texas! There is no apple store for 3 hours in any direction!! Maybe jailbreaking would fix it.... And I am against jailbreaking! but maybe they can help.

same problem here as well

Microphone deosn't work with phone calls, unless speakerphone is activated

Microphone doesn't work in Voice memo at all

However, the microphone will pick the slightest noise while recording a video.

things i have done to try and troubleshoot that didin't alleviate the problem:

1. hard reset
2. update IOS

3. Restore and set up as new iphone

4, DFU Mode and Restore

5. Unplug and replug headphones numerous times.

My SWAG: it is software problem on refurbushed phones that are not QC/QT at refurbushment.

Just becuase the decibel needle in voice memo moves when you tap the screen, doesn't mean the microphone actually works.

My Solution; returning to Apple for a replacement. it like Applecare is more than going to pay for itself. Since no Apple store is within 250 miles, I have to wait on shipping.

Just bought iphone4 3 days ago and couldnt use yet cause nobody could hear me since my first call. When i call i hear them clear and also my voice very weak on the back. Tried the voice memo and cuoldnt hear my recording too. Change the simcard to another iphone and it works well. Already restared as asked and nothing happens. Wondering if it,s a software configuration problem or it s simply came damaged from factory. ..

Same problem here. Mic hasn't been working well for about a month on and off.

Mic will work after a sync and then shortly after NFG. My carrier is Bell and I'm on a "3 yr.contract".

iPhone now 3 months "out of warranty" and of course I'm now expected to pay over $200 just to get a

quote and such on what the repair will be. Not a happy Apple or Bell customer right now.

Grrrrrrrrrr..........

hi Everyone I bought iphone 4S from Espoo finland, from Elisa, and I have problem in listining from other side, I went to coplin but they are not replacing my mobile, I am paying every month 25 euro for the mobile for 2 years, but it seems Finnish people are not active in theri business or do not respect their customer, they just avoid things and sell their electronics what I feel.I am very sad now. they want to send my mobile for repair now after long discussion, hope apple will take some action other wise apple will be also lose like Nokia in future

This is a bit of a response to anyone interested as you guys seem to have so much trouble. I have 2 iPhone 4s. One works, one doesnt. In the time I've taken to PAINSTAKINGLY take these apart and piece them back together more than 40 times, I can say this:

1. The microphone "boom" is a small rubber connector on the inside of the phone connected to the dock which inturn is connected to the speaker (this means for speakerphone or any noise from apps you use). For the person who spilled butter on their phone, you've blocked this small canal and need to open it up, unscrew the screw to the right of the bottom speaker and the screw to the left that is on the logic board. This will allow you to (gently for god sakes) remove the speaker and expose the microphone to the right of the dock. Pop the rubber piece out (gently, again) and clean it out. It comes out a bit a like a stopper so don't be scared of it but don't break it, obviously.

2. For those who are experiencing issues like flickering sound, flickering voice or other issues like this, it could be hardware. If you can't narrow it down or don't feel like narrowing it down and would rather take it to apple, TAKE IT TO APPLE. God knows I've broken enough parts for two lifetimes opening this thing up. If I had advice for anyone I would say take it to the Apple store and let them deal with it. Just pay them. It's easier, trust me.

3. 5.0.1 has given people problems out the *** that I can't believe haven't been solved. Anything from completely dropping service for 3-5 days at a time or like vinnie has mentioned, a short in the bluetooth or earpiece jack. I have an iPod 3rd gen and a 4th gen with a shorted out ear jack so it isn't uncommon. I have my suspicions about the whole speakerphone/regular mic situation but nothing solid. My guess is that speakerphone works because of a short in the wiring but I can't possibly justify that without thorough research.

In conclusion, be wary of 5.0.1 and squeeze your warranties for all they're worth. As much as I have a weakspot for apple products, I can just as easily move to a different platform without regret.

I have the same fault with my phone, with the mic not working so people can't hear me on calls. It only works if I connect my headphones or use it on speaker phone - not an ideal situation. It was 2.5 months out of warranty when the fault occured.

I am just back from the Covent Garden Apple store and have been told that as I am out of warranty, i have to pay £120 to get a replacement phone which will then only be under warranty for 90 days.

Bearing in mind this fault has not been fuilly explained to me and seeing all the above comments, this could clearly happen again, so I do not understand why I should have to fork out more money for a replacement.

This is not what i was expecting at all and I feel Apple are being very mean by not acknowledging that this is a hardware fault and providing a replacement free of charge.

I was told by the Apple customer services guy that i've had bad luck to get one of these phones and that other phones last longer than 14.5 months!!!

Needless to say I will not be buying a new one and will look into Samsung Galaxys instead. Very unhappy customer.
