iPhone 4 - painfully slow wi-fi performance

I've been experiencing painfully slow wifi performance (about 1/4 the speed of 3G performance) while connected to Wi-Fi.

I tried following the advice given in an Apple Support article which suggested resetting network settings. I then had to re-enter the password for my wi-fi and it seemed better for a few minutes while after doing that. But then it's back to snails pace again.

Has anyone else see this? My Wi-Fi router is a Linksys WAG325N with firmware v1.00.12. It's working fine with several macs, an iPad, an iPod Touch and an iPhone 3GS. It's only the iPhone 4 which has this problem. I can load a given web page on both my iPhone 4 and 3GS and the 3GS normally finishes before the iPhone 4 has even loaded the page title. It's that bad!

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!

thanks,

Andrew

@layleeloo

It's now v1.03.23 from v1.02.04. Downloaded from here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2328

First google result for dg834gt + V1.03.87 pulled up this: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/technical-discussion/20727-community-updates-dg83 4gt.html

I'm guessing that it's a little different for you because your router's with Sky (custom firmware, perhaps?). I'm in Australia not UK and just bought the router stand-alone about 3 or 4 years ago. I'm assuming you need to grab router updates directly through Sky rather than Netgear.

Software issue?

I had this same issue as well where my i4 download speed was around 1.5 megabits even though my computer, ipad, and 3gs all hit above 10 mbps. I was using speedtest.net app to measure this. I then tried the FCC test app and it measured the i4 as 10mbps. I've retested both apps multiple times and the results are consistent. I then went on testmyiphone.com and it shows the same speed as the speedtest.net app. Finally, I went to i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.htm and got 10mbps.

So does this mean it's a software issue? Also, which one is the accurate measurement of how a typical app like skype, facetime, or youtube would perform? Let me know if you guys are able to replicate these results.

Ah sorry, I thought you were UK based. So confusing.

As for being in the UK, my router which seems to have later firmware on than listed on netgears site, is now a little speedier. My UK sky router on has settings for g & b, g only, or auto. I changed it to "g" and turned off my router. Turned off wi fi on my phone then shut that off too. I re started the router and then my phone and turned wi fi on and now its already faster on G only.

So, I read one person put on their post G only doesnt work? Well, it works for me and is now faster. Although I will wait and see what its like in the morning. I will re post again to see if its still fast tomorrow (as some say its fine after re boot but then drops off) so that will then tell me all I need to know.

Thanks

I am having the exact same problem and I can't seem to find a solution. I have tried everything that has been suggested and I am using the latest firmware but nothing works.

I am using a Netgear DG834PN router.

These are the results I get using testmyiphone.com:

WiFi:
0.02 Mbps (20 Kbps / 2 kB/s)
Transferred 256 KB in 103.6 seconds.

3G:
0.87 Mbps (866 Kbps / 106 kB/s)
Transferred 1024 KB in 9.7 seconds.

I really hope there is a fix for this soon because it's driving me insane.

I am also noticing WifI painfully slow on my new iPhone 4. I have a iPad 64Gb, Touch 64GB and iPhone 4 32GB all running latest software and all connected to an O2 Wirless Box II. The iPhone is from TESCO but uses O2's network.

I installed "UK Map" app on all three. I then select an identical area on the iPad, iTouch and iPhone 4 and the iPad is the fastest with the Touch not far behind but the iPhone takes 3 to 4 times longer to download. Will do a speedtest to get comparison figures but anybody got any ideas of what might be the problem ? I have just under 2 weeks within which I can return the iPhone 4 and cancel agreement so want to get this sorted out quickly. Did try FaceTime a couple of days ago and it seemed to work fine. Only today did I notice the difference in speeds when doing an apparently identical task on the three devices.

Thanks Iain

I have an iP4 and Airport Extreme with Comcast as my ISP and was also underwhelmed by YouTube loading times. I implemented the suggestion above and it seems to be a noticeable improvement. My city was not listed, so I just used the top line suggestion for "East Coast." My email sometimes bogs down similarly under WiFi -- "LOADING" wheel spins a little longer than I seem to remember on my 3GS -- so I will see how that does over the next few days.

But, overall, I think MACATRON's suggestion above is a good one. Thanks!

Hi Andy78. Here's my experience when shopping for the iPhone 4. I brought my iPod Touch 2G to the apple Store just to compare with the new Retina screen side by side. But when playing the same youtube videos and both on store's wifi the iPhone 4 would stall on loading each video while my Touch would play seamlessly?! I repeated this experiment on 3 iPhone 4's all with the same result and no employee could explain it. Was my iPod Touch interfering with the iPhone 4...I dunno if that's even possible. Anyone else encounter this issue?

I stand corrected!

Regarding my post above about setting it to g only. I experienced the same problem as everyone else.
After doing the change and resetting everything - it flew along!

However during the middle of the very next day it is back to sluggish as ****. Example, just trying to post a reply on a forum or look at an image, takes nearly 45 seconds on my iphone on wi fi compared to about 3 on my iPad. Even 3G works faster than my IP4 wi fi. Im really ******* annoyed now as there is nothing else left for me to try to improve it so im not happy to say the least.

I'm having the same problem with my new iPhone 4--side by side with my 3GS, wifi download speed have been reduced to a mere trickle. Speedtest apps all show normal throughput, but actual download/upload speeds are dismal. I am running everything through a new 1TB Apple Tim Capsule. Tried changing the Radio Mode setting manually from a/n - b/g to a - b/g, with no luck.

The only thing that seems to have helped was setting up a Guest Network on the same router with a separate password, and no other devices logged into that account. Then I get good enough data rates. I think the handset gets confused when it is talking to a router that is dynamically sending data to multiple devices on multiple frequencies. Same router but a dedicated account seems (e.g., only phone logged in) seems to help a lot. Apple needs to get on this--the phone's wifi performance doesn't even equal a 3GS with their own router... FAIL.

Macatron! Big, big props to you for the DNS suggestion my friend!

I had severe issues with horribly slow youtube wifi speed with both my old 3gs and my new iphone for over the past year. I tried changing settings on two different dlink routers i hooked up and could not get any improvment in the painfully lagging youtube speed. I tweaked and tweaked my routers, and scoured the internet for hours to no avail. Macatron, your DNS suggestion fixed the lag! I had been trying to view a few of the awesome HD clips from the Lollapolooza Festival and it was just awful even trying to get a few seconds to play with out stopping. After changing the DNS to Comcast's Illinois settings the videos play straight through with no stopping! Thanks you so much!
