RAID-1 array for boot volume?

Hello.

I have a new quad-G5 with 2x500GB HD. One disk is "System" (with all the system and user data on it, applications etc.) and the other one is "Empty" (nothing on it).

I want to set up a RAID-1 (mirrored) array, so that System's contents are mirrored onto Empty and appear as a single 500 GB disk.

I've been reading what little documentation exists but I really can't figure out how to do it. Can somebody explain exactly how I go about mirroring the boot drive?

Much obliged for your kindness.

I'm interested in RAID-1 because blistering read performance is useful for my line of work, and the redundancy of it appeals to me. I'm not thinking of it in terms of backup.

I'm interested to know if anybody knows how to do this. It's a bit disheartening to ask a precise technical question and have a bunch of people attack the premise of the question (should I or shouldn't I?) as opposed to the question itself (how do I?).

I've read spurious reports on the Internet of people succeeding in this, but after more than an hour on the phone with AppleCare I haven't been able to RAID yet.
