Random dead iPhone 4 issues

Three times now my iPhone 4 has simply gone dead. Black Screen, unresponsive, hard resets do not work. Eventually it comes back from the dead but only after multiple attempts to reset. I did a recovery once. Has anyone else had this issue?

Same problem here....
Did all the reset procedures, DFU, software upgrades, etc...
The random dead phone issue just became more and more frequent

Handed my phone in at the Vodacare store in Canal Walk Cape Town. Now my phone has been sent to Johannesburg.
I am not quite sure whether some idiot at Vodacom is going to try and repair the phone when it should clearly just be replaced.

We have 2 agents in South Africa - Vodacom & MTN.
From what I can gather MTN replace faulty phones on the spot. Vodacom is another story... The phone is sent to Johannesburg (this takes almost a week) then you have to wait for a technician to be assigned to the job. They give no update or feedback and simply repair the phone and send it back to Cpt. If you are lucky it takes less than 2 weeks and even more lucky if they actually replace the faulty unit.

It is shocking that we have to endure such bad service.

I truely hope Apple gives Vodacom a reprimand. They are not living up to the standard, quality & service Apple is known for...

Most of all I am hoping to get a NEW and fully functional phone next week

OMG I'm having the same problem....I purchased my iPhone4 on 06/29/2010; I pushed the standby button, put it in my pocket, then 5 minutes later I found it wouldn't turn on. What do I do now? Will Apple replace my phone? Guess I need to call them tomorrow. Geez..

Have you tried plugging your iphone to the charger for more than 15 minutes?

have you tried holding the home button and the sleep/wake button simultaneously? (Try holding them both for 10-15 seconds).

I had this problem today! The iphone 4 randomly went black screen, and wouldn't respond to being charged, (wouldn't know it was plugged in). It wouldn't respond to me hard reseting the device (home + sleep/wake button for 20 secs) and itunes wouldn't detect it. Here's what I did.

1. Plug it into computer for 45 min - 1 hour, doesn't matter what kind of computer, just so it would normally charge. (I know it doesn't vibrate or anything though, like it normally would when being plugged in). NOTE: Itunes isn't involved, just exit it.

2. After its in the computer, NOT a wall outlet for 45 min - 1 hour, spam the sleep/wake button for awhile. Now you probably just lost faith in this fix, but it worked for me, and the hard reset didn't. Rapidly press the sleep/wake button DO NOT HOLD IT DOWN - while its still plugged into computer, until you see a red battery that want's you to charge it on screen. You know, the screen that comes up when your iphone has like 1% battery, and won't do anything, but display that screen on a really dim screen.

3. Enjoy fixed iphone without having to restore it.

I'm having the same problem too with my iPhone 4. I was texting, and set the phone down (probably on lock) and when to do something for a few seconds. When I come back, the phone is totally black and unresponsive.
It's not responding to the sleep/wake button, home screen button, being plugged into a wall and being plugged into a computer. I can't even get it to hard reset, and iTunes isn't even recognizing it when it's plugged into the computer.
If anyone could provide any insight, that'd be great.

I had the exact same problem, I fixed it using the steps I listed above your comments, it worked for me, when nothing else did, have you tried my fix? It's not guaranteed to work, but it worked for me, so isn't it worth a shot? You know, Apple can wirelessly brick ANY iphone that they want to, for security reasons. Maybe their servers to do this crashed or something, idk....well...yeah its happening to a ton of people, not just you.

Same here. Made a phone call. Put the iphone 4 back into my pocket and when I checked it the next time at home it is a brick. Didn't react to any input (buttons), nor charging, nor iTunes.
I tried to restore it through iTunes but it fails with error 1600.

I just about gave up and had just removed the SIM when I held the Power & Home button for 15ish seconds. And it worked. It came back to life. No need to restore.

I just hope it doesn't die again (like others did).

Try holding the power button on top and the navigation button on the front simultaneously for at least 25 seconds. That resets the hardware someway (without erasing anything on the phone).

My iPhone 4, was a total brick no matter what I tried until i learnt this trick at an authorized Apple reseller that apparently learnt the trick from some technicians from Apple that had been visiting the store earlier.

Just happened to me and my friend as well. Tt happened at about the same time, so I don't really understand the reason for bricking our phones. However, thanks to runblom's advice, both phones are working now (mine 4G, hers 3G). I would like to thank a lot for this advice.
Another question is, do you think I should ask the store to change my iPhone4 for a new one? Because from what I have read, the iPhone might have hardware issues.

Thanks for advices, Luke

I purchased an iPhone 4 on the release date and had relatively few issues, until recently. On Christmas day my phone stopped receiving calls and text messages. While I was able to make phone calls and send texts, I could literally stand next to someone calling me and they were sent straight to voicemail. After an hour on the phone with AT&T it was determined that the only way to make my iPhone 4 work was to turn off 3G and connect solely to the Edge network. My iPhone, while slow, worked like a dream.

At the request of AT&T I reluctantly spent a day of my vacation with my family at the Apple Store where I was given a new phone...eventually. Today (New Years Eve) my "new" iPhone 4 went dead while taking pictures with my family. It was completely unresponsive. At the time I was receiving mass texts, the battery was at about 30% and a photography application was open. I managed to get the phone back on by plugging it in and holding the home and power button (master reset) for about two minutes. The iPhone seems to be working now, but I also took it off auto-lock as some of the previous posts suggested.

Thank you for your posts with your own stories and suggestions. I was about to throw my "new" iPhone 4 across the room. Hopefully I can get Apple tech support to send me a new phone as I embark on a cross-country trip home and live 3 hours away from the closest Apple store.
