iOS4 landscape photos sideways in e-mail

I've e-mailed photos, taken in landscape mode, on iOS 4 (3G and iPhone 4) and they're sideways. It seems that iOS no longer orients landscape photos correctly before e-mailing them.

Other's have noted the problem here: http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-939122.html

To reproduce the problem, simply snap a photo in landscape mode and then e-mail it to your desktop e-mail client (i.e. Mail) and it'll be sideways.

I'm seeing this problem with friends on Facebook who post their photos automatically from Posterous.

Truly unbelievable that Apple would create this problem and then not take the trouble to fix it. Makes me feel like an idiot for upgrading from a 3Gs, which worked perfectly, to a 4G which turns its photos on their side. I think it's funny that some of the posters in this thread are such diehard Apple koolaid driners that they maintain that this is not a problem created by Apple.

It has nothing to do with being a 'kool-aid' drinker and everything to do with being a software engineer for 25 years. I know where the fault lies and it is not with Apple.

Hi all:

After doing a little research on this problem, which I never had with the 3 G, there are basically two solutions. 1.) Take all pics holding the camera in landscape mode with the home button to the right. Putting the home button to the left will turn the pic upside down. 2) This one I like better. Download from Itunes an app called BEST CAMERA for $2.99. So, I downloaded it, took a pic in portrait mode on my iphone 4, from this app, and wow, the pic sent to my aol address was perfect as well as the pic to my Facebook page. Thanks to the person from another site who recommended the download of Best Camera. So, I am not going to worry about it anymore. Technically, it has something to do with the orientation of the picture, but I will leave that to others to decipher how it all works. So, for now, I am a happy camper.

If Apple is going to use an exif tag to rotate photos sent from the iPhone then Apple's Safari on the Mac should recognize the tag and rotate the photo properly when people are using web-based mail applications to view the photos. Mail and Preview recognize the tag, why shouldn't Safari?

portrait mode picture exif before ios4
ExifImageWidth - 600
ExifImageHeight - 800
--> height > with : that's all right
No orientation data

portrait mode picture exif after ios4 and after ios 4.0.2
Orientation - Right top
ExifImageWidth - 640
ExifImageHeight - 480
--> height < width : how could this be right in portrait mode ????

Is it really hard for apple to correct that bug ???

(by the way i'm not anymore able to send a picture at 800 X 600 pixels and for me it's a regression)
