During call, face is hitting Mute, End, Contacts, etc. buttons.

My 4S never have this problem, but after upgraded to ios7, problem occurred intermittently, the phone app keypad will be hit by my face when calling and placed the handset beside closed to my ear.

It suppose to be detected no light by the sensor and turn the keypad/screen off at this calling moment.

Just wonder if this problem for the iOS 7 to work along with the new sensor of iphone5c/5s, but problem left on iPhone 4S.

Iphone 5, same prob with and without mask, tried to hard reset but nothing helped so far. In addition to this vefore ios 7 everything worked... Hope this is fixable issue...

I have been using an iPhone for 3 years. I never had a problem with "face-dialing" until this iOS 7 upgrade. Now I hang up on people, switch to speaker or worse try to make a Facetime connection all the time. IT IS VERY ANNOYING. Just another reason why I wish I never upgraded to this new iOS.

The new interface is more complicated and requires more keystrokes. Apple is losing their simplicity in design.

I have a 4S and i believe it has to be something with iOS 7. I must hit the mute or speaker button at least once a conversation. This never happened before with iOS6

iPhone 4 with iOS7. Periodically hits during call: mute, hold, speaker.

Based on DaverAZ's advice above, I tried this:

(Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)

...on my iPhone 5, and it worked perfectly. No data got deleted, the reset just resets the settings to their defaults (brightness, ringtones etc.). Must reset the proximity sensor along with everything else.

Of Course with my name being DaVinci I have discovered the best fix for this phone problem for all of mankind (until apple can fix their broken machine)

Follow these simple steps:

1) Place your "photos" icon on your home screen

2) Create a new album and name it "Phone"

3) Take a "Black" picture (by covering the camera lens while taking a picture)

4) Open your "photos" icon again and then find you "black" picture in you "camera roll" file and "select" it and "Add to" your "Phone" album

5) Go back to your photo albums and open you "phone" album and select the "black" picture

6) Now press the home button, which should take you back to your home page.

You have now created the ultimate fix for this very annoying problem and now here is how you use this fix.

To use your NEW creation follow these (2) quick and simple steps once you have either answered or placed a phone call:

1) Anytime during your active call, press the home button

2) Open your "Photos" icon

if you followed all of the previous (6) steps correctly,

This should have taken you directly to your "black" picture with the white info bars at the top and bottom of the screen and you should also now see the green phone info bar at the top of screen.

If you would like the screen to be totally "black" during your call, simply touch the center of the "black" picture once it is opened and the white and green bars will disappear also.

At anytime during your call, while the screen is totally black, you can simply press the home button to re-energize the screen.

You can now enjoy you conversations without having to worry about accidentally touching any of the phone features.

For those of you that are now beginning to think like a DaVinci you can enhance this feature even further by using your imagination and creativity as to other pictures you can use if a totally "black" screen is too boring.

I've read so many posts about the screen not turning dark when on a call. My wife had the same problem on her phone and she didn't realize it until I took a look at it. When I was on the phone with her, her cheek would start dialing another number or she would put me on mute. It started to get a little frustrating to say the least. I did he resets and everything else everyone has suggested, but nothing ever seemed to work. HOWEVER, I think I may have found a solution to this issue, at least I did with my wife's phone. Just about everyone has a case on their iPhone, and most have a an extra screen protector on the phone as well. My wife has an iPhone4, she put a screen protector on it along with an otterbox case. I took the box case off and covered the sensor with my thumb, still didn't work. So I took that extra screen protector off and then made another call, covered the sensor up again, and what do ya know, it worked. The screen went dark every time I covered it up during a call. So even though the screen protector is clear, it somehow covers the sensor up all the way and keeps it from working properly.

This has been a fix for us, give it a try, maybe it will solve this issue

I haven't had a problem, even with a case on, with an 4s and now my 5s until about a month ago. It is so GD annoying, I have to answer a call, hit the home button and then open a 3rd party camera app to be able to SIMPLY TALK ON THE PHONE.

This problem, relying on a sensor, is a case of trying to be too clever, post-modern, hip, and geeky. Obviosly it is a wide spread problem, obviously relying on a sensor to do the most basic function of a phone has failed and was foolish to begin with.

Also when I get an incoming call, I only have the option to accept or hang up on the incoming call, if I choose to hang up it hangs up both. It didn't used to be this way.

On 3 occasions I've received and incoming call and just sat there and looked at my phone and after about the 3rd or 4th ring, it answers itself.

I have thrown this piece of hipster junk across the house, the yard and out the window of my house trying to break it so I can go get an android.

It won't break (mophie battery case). So I am now going to take my phone out to the firing range and with my M4 and a 30 round magazine, I will make a rage relieving video and post it on YouTube.

With an iPhone 5S it is still under warranty. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar to have the device checked and if defective it will be replaced. Trying to damage it to justify for yourself purchasing a different phone is ridiculous.

Check the if your cover if you have a protective cover that is......is not covering the sensor at the top of your phone ....this will cause this annoying problem

recently, half my calls are being muted when I answer. There has been no physical changes to my 4s, and it has never been jailbroke. Add this to the fact that my phone won't let me answer 20% of my incoming calls cause it freezes, makes a guy wonder if having an apple phone is really the best choice...

is there going to be be a solution apple?
