I've had the same issue happen three times. All three times my phone was not being used and was sitting on my desk. A call came in and I couldn't answer it because it needed to "cool down".

Called Apple today and they tech guy said he had no idea what it was and suggested I do a system reinstall or something. He also said if the problem persisted I could either be without a phone for a week or pay $30 for them to ship me a phone and then send my phone back to them.

Seems like a poor solution to a possibly bad phone: no cell phone for a week or pay an additional $30.

Slowly being disappointed by a company I loved 😟

sounds like it could either be an App that is triggering a bug in the software or you simply have a faulty phone and should return it. i would try removing all your apps first and see if that keeps it from happening. if it still does it with no apps then i would return the phone. if it stops then put the apps back on one at a time until it triggers the warning.

it has been well over 100 degrees here in NC with the index much higher due to the crazy humidity here and i have yet to get that message. I have been making phone calls and everything in my truck with it sitting in the blistering heat all day (my truck sitting in the heat not the phone).

Ya, I got this too. I wish apple would document this and fix it.

For me, I went for a walk on a cool day. Got home, and my phone rang but before I could answer the yellow triangle popped up. It said 'iphone needs to cool down before..' with a french language slider. Then showed 'notruf' on the emergency dialer. I thought it was an iphone virus or something.

For those who experiencing excessive overheating call Apple. I received my 3rd phone after Apple informed me that overheating is taken very seriously. I had my 2nd replacement for about 3 hours when I noticed my holster was extremely hot. I pulled the phone out and was shocked how hot it was. I touched a few people with and their first reaction was loud. I immediately called Apple and told them. They asked about 10 weird questions. Like, was anyone injured? Did anything catch fire, etc? They charged my credit card $499. The next morning I received a brand new phone with a return kit for the overheater. They charged my credit card back a few days after they received it.

Just to add my report to the list in the event this becomes an issue later.

I'm in London, it's cold, iPhone 4 (iOS 4.1) is cold (not freezing just normally cold as per ambient room temp), i.e. within operational norm.

Not running any unusual Apps or doing anything on the phone.

Call comes in, rings once and then immediately gives the "Temperature - iPhone needs to cool down before you use it."

Had to hard reset it to bring it back to life.

Never seen this before. Ironic seeing I was in Ghana two weeks ago when it was proper hot and the phone worked fine.

Looks like an iOS bug to me.

I'm really thinking this is a bug within iOS or an app is hanging which causes this temperature warning. I've had this happen three times with this phone (on my second iPhone 4 as I had an accelerometer issue with the first) and it's never been hot to the touch. I've been outside in 80 degree weather with my phone in the sun and not get this warning, yet while on a counter doing nothing... it's hot? I'm reading TOO MANY of these kind of post here and on Twitter. There has to be a bug somewhere.

I just got the same error. Normal room temperature, iPhone has been laying on the table untouched for an hour or so, a sms message arrives and when I pick up the phone to view it it shows the message and I can't do anything. Phone is completely cold though :s Doesn't make any sense. Message went away after 5-10 min, but still, this is not normal.
