Thanks for this!  Even when I connected it to the computer it appeared dead-dead, no response or boot-up. I'm a first time iPhone user and knew the Apple site would be the most help.  Whew!

I'll join the crowd in praising this post -- it actually worked.  My iPhone 4S (now just 2 days old) has the same symptoms as everybody else.  Sat my phone down after checking email, etc.  Came back 4 hours later to find it dead; and I know battery was 80+% when I turned it off.  Tried the power and home button, but didn't hold it down long enough until I read this thread.  I did turn off location services since other posts claimed that was causing battery to die faster..willing to try anything at this point.  I need my phone!

Another thanks for this thread. I didn't know the key phrase "hard reset", and my search for force quit turned up this thread (a rather vague hit down in the results).

Verizon iPhone since February 2011, has quit twice. Once two months ago on OS 4 while running playing music - a normal press of the on button brought it back up. I was mildly amused that playing music started the song I was listening to when the phone shut down, and the stopwatch was still on time.

Today, only three minutes after taking if off charge, plugging in my ear buds and clicking the remote to play music caused it to turn off. Plugging it into iTunes failed to show the phone, although it was perhaps still powered: the ear buds clicked when I unplugged them. This was OS 5, and required a hard reset.

Interestingly, both times the failure was related to playing music. Too lazy to see if this is documented or not, but if not, it should be! The only other issues I've ever had with the phone is losing cellular data connection, solved by turning on and off (first time took me a full day to figure that out, I thought it was a Verizon issue). Four times in 9 months. And once in a while, a third party app using GPS apparently stays on in the background causing fast battery discharge. Quitting the suspect app fixes it.

Another thank you. This is ridiculous....I had my 3GS for two years and this never ever happened. The 4S should not do this at all.....period.

    Awesome post...hard reset helps.

  • sjmul Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

My iPhone 3G has been doing this continously...  I have done the hard reset, twice - today, and it still crashes or freezes, or goes dead.  The only way I can wake it up is to plug it in and it says the battery is dead, then after a minute or so on the charger it comes back alive saying the battery is fully charged.  Help, I am getting very frusterated!!!

  • Aalap Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Seems like a battery or a spill problem mate, best to take it to the authorized service station. Though it might cost you a BOMB to get it fixed, especially if it is a spill problem.

  • sjmul Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Thanks!! But what am I looking at? Spill problem? Bomb?  This is all new to me!!  I'll take it in, thanks again!!

  • Aalap Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Lolzzz... Let me simplify, spill would mean water or any liquid has gone in and gotten to the battery or connectors, this may be even dew. Bomb is simply too much money for too little bang!! simply put a spill would be very costly, take it to the service center to be sure.

My IPhone 4 seems to be the only one which does not recover after a hard reset. tried it everal times up to 60 seconds with charger plugged in and without charge but phone is still dead. Should I condsider buying a Nokia now?
