Thanks so much!  My wife's 4S died this evening. I had

spilled  Mountain Dew near it this morning,

though it looked completely dry. Thought

I must have killed it. But a hard reset made

    it good as new!

Thanks, all!  Mongoosebarg's suggestion to do a hard set worked for me.  Bluerill.

This happened to me yesterday. iPhone 4S. Battery life seemed fine, just went dead.

Tried hard reboot, plugged into iTunes, even tried "find my phone", nothing.

However, about 3 hours later, the battery must have finally died, because I went to show a friend and the battery dead symbol appeared. And then after a recharge all was good again.

Thinking back, the phone wasn't as cold as a dead phone should be, suggesting that something was still happening inside.

So if the hard reboot doesn't work, and you still can feel some heat, just try waiting for a few hours, see if the battery drains and it sorts itself out.

My iPhone 4 did this yesterday and I went to the Apple Store and the Genius bar couldn't even hard reset it back up. They pronounced it completely dead. And now I have the option of paying 149$ or 199$. I don't understand why I have to pay for something that I didn't do or cause to happen.

Can anyone help with this since the hard reset doesn't do the trick in my case?

I've come to this online support community as my second-to-last resort (my last resort is to call Apple).  Like your experience, my iPhone suddenly died while still at +60% power.  Every attempt to restore the phone has failed.  Holding the sleep+home buttons (10s, 30s, 60s) doesn't work.  Connecting the phone to my computer doesn't work (iTunes doesn't recognize that the phone is even connected.  The phone doesn't signal that it's being charged.).  Clearly there is something going on with the phone because the screen is faintly lit and the phone is slightly warm to the touch.  Is my only hope at this point to wait until the battery dies and then keep my fingers crossed that it will allow me to charge it/turn it on?  My love/hate relationship with Apple continues...

    You are AWESOME!!!

This is my first Apple product and I had no clue what to do.

When I saw the words 'hard reset' I got a little nervous because I thought 'Factory Reset' and that I was going to lose everything (contacts, apps, etc) like I did with my old 'Droid phone.  Nothing against 'Droid phones; it was great while it lasted, but upgrading from Cupcake to Eclair toasted it.

I held my breath and did the reset, and joy of joys, IT'S ALIVE!!!

I thought I'd never hear Siri's dulcet tones mispronouncing my name again!

    Thanks so much!!!

Thanks - you are a life saver.  This happened to me last night and have been thinking nasty thoughts (new iphone, service provider not helping etc..... ) 30 seconds after reading this forum I'm a happy bunny again.

Hey thanks for the tip about a hard reset. I took my previous iPhone 4S to Apple because of this problem and they replaced the phone without mentioning this tip which is odd. Anyway, within days my new replacement did the same and so I suspected that this was a common problem. A google search brought me here and your hard reset tip worked like a charm.

So thanks for that, you saved me a lot of frustration.
